2 Abstract:This investigation of Josephus' presentation of the feast of Passover in his works first offers a ten-page introduction and a statement of methodological premises. Then it discusses the celebration of Passover as it is treated in the various parts of the OT and in the rewritten accounts of those texts in Josephus' Antiquities. Next it deals with the celebration of Passover in the Hellenistic and Roman periods (with excursuses on the theme of purity in Josephus' works and on Josephus' language regarding Passover and its implications). Then it attempts to set Josephus' treatment of Passover within the context of Jewish literature and within the historical situation, and notes other means of placing the results in context. The conclusion is that Passover has a significant place in Josephus' writings, and that he viewed it as one of the essential elements that could lead to the reunification of the Jewish people and the consolidation of their identity.
