3 Course Introduction This degree brings together an in-depth study of Christian Theology with a detailed academic study of the text of the Bible. During your studies you will have the option, if you wish, to learn Hebrew and/or Greek to be able to read the Bible in the languages it was first written. Your study of the Bible will feed into your growing knowledge of Christian theology so that you will acquire expertise in finding your way through the complex and rich Christian tradition. The course embodies Hope s commitment to take faith seriously and at the same time to be intellectually stretching, stimulating and challenging. The teaching staff represent a broad range of Christian traditions, and the students, too, are drawn from across the spectrum of faiths. Their work together puts into practice Liverpool Hope s vision of a University community that is fully Anglican, fully Catholic, fully ecumenical, and fully open to those of all faiths and beliefs. 3

4 What you will study Level C (Year One) Lecture Series: Christian Theology to 1453 Introduction to Biblical Studies Seminars: Rome, Jerusalem and Constantinople: Christian Theology to 1453 Developments in World Christianity to 1453 Ancient Worlds, Languages and Cultures Assessed work: Symbolic analysis, presentation, exegetical portfolio, theological portfolio, two essays, two exams. Level I (Year Two) Lecture Series: Christian Theology from the Fall of Constantinople to 1900 The human person and the community of believers believing and belonging in the reformation and enlightenment periods Biblical Greek Seminars: The Reformation Period to 1700 Christianity encounters the Modern World New Testament Studies in Biblical Greek Either: Old Testament Exegesis or Biblical Hebrew Biblical Hebrew (optional) Assessed work: two essays, two textual analyses (one each of Old and New Testaments) or one textual analysis in New Testament and a Hebrew test, exegetical portfolio, theological portfolio, two exams. Level H (Year Three) Christian Theology in a Century of Conflict (1900-present day): Lectures and seminars will be offered each year in two of the following areas: Systematic Theology, Contextual Theology, Liturgical Theology or Christian Spirituality. Advanced Biblical exegesis: A programme of lectures and seminars, which will vary from year to year will be offered in both New and Old Testament exegesis. Dissertation Assessed work: two textual analyses (one each of Old and New Testament), two essays, two exams, Dissertation. 4

5 Employability and Career Opportunities As a graduate in Theology, you will have developed excellent skills in critical thinking and expression, which are highly prized by employers. You will be competent in textual analysis, report writing and have high-level oral communication skills. You will have an indepth knowledge of Christianity, a capacity to work with primary texts in different languages and an ability to empathise with and understand different points of view. This prepares you for a range of careers including education, law, media, public administration, social, pastoral and community work. Many graduates enter the teaching profession. A background in Theology is excellent preparation for teaching religious studies at A Level. You will also be well positioned to pursue postgraduate study in theology and related humanities subjects. All members of the Theology staff are active researchers, publishing books and articles on a variety of areas such as biblical studies, church history, liturgical theology, contextual, philosophical and systematic theology The content of their teaching often draws upon their research, meaning that students are exposed to the most recent developments in the field. The third year of study, in particular, is designed to engage students with the cutting-edge research carried out in the Department Our library contains a wide range of resources and extensive supporting material for the study Theology. During your studies you will have the chance to participate in exciting study trips. In the past we have had visits to Chester, London, Dublin, Greece and Turkey among others. 6

7 Graduate Profiles Ann O Neill, BA Philosophy and Ethics & Religious Studies A number of mature students I know who graduated from Hope had told me that it had been the best experience of their lives. So I came to the open days, and then decided to register. What made my experience special was the subject knowledge, support and total commitment of the Department s staff their doors were always open to students. Everything contributed to the experience: the Library, the mix of age, gender and ethnic background in the student group, the campus, the work I did as a peer writing tutor while I was here. Now I work for the Archdiocese of Liverpool as a parish administrator. James Proctor, BA Theology and Religious Studies Liverpool Hope University won my heart and mind when I arrived. I was drawn to Hope s welcoming academic environment, its status as a highly regarded theological institution, and the opportunity to study in an ecumenical environment. My areas of interest included Eucharistic and Trinitarian theology. I am currently an administrator on a support network project at Hope as well as working in retail. Studying at Liverpool Hope was the right choice for me. 7

8 Academic Staff Profiles Dr Peter McGrail, Associate Professor and Head of Department Dr McGrail s research area is Christian worship and ritual, with a special focus on Roman Catholicism. He has published widely on the subject, with two monographs, First Communion: Ritual, Church and Popular Religious Identity (Ashgate 2007) and The Rite of Christian Initiation: Adult Rituals and Roman Catholic Ecclesiology (Ashgate, 2013). Dr Andrew Cheatle, Senior Lecturer Dr Cheatle s area of research spans Wesleyan and Methodist studies and homiletics and he is a world-leading expert on the life and thought of W.E. Sangster. He has published the first book, W.E. Sangster: Herald of Holiness (Paternoster, 2011) on the thought of W.E. Sangster. His second book on W.E. Sangster s sermons in America is due for publication. Dr Jenny Daggers, Associate Professor in Theology Jenny Daggers teaching specialism is Christian theology in the 20th and 21st centuries. Her research interest is in engaging doctrine from postcolonial, postmodern and gender perspectives. Recent publications are Postcolonial Theology of Religions: Particularity and Pluralism in World Christianity, and co-edited with Grace Ji-Sun Kim, Christian Doctrines for Global Gender Justice, and Reimagining with Christian Doctrines: Responding to Global Gender Injustices. Reverend Professor Daniel Jeyaraj, Professor of World Christianity and Director of the Andrew F. Walls Centre for the Study of African and Asian Christianity. Professor Jeyaraj, a South Indian theologian, is Professor of World Christianity. He directs the activities of the Andrew Walls Centre and offers courses on World Christianity and Hinduism. His areas of expertise include Christian-Hindu interactions in 18th Century South India and Germany, Pietism, Inculturation, Historical Theology, Religious and Ecumenical Studies and Intercultural Impact of Christianity in Asia and Africa. He has published 9 research monographs and over 50 essays, and edited 3 books. 8

9 Dr Gergely Juhász, Lecturer Dr Juhász holds a PhD in Theology (New Testament) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). His main areas of expertise are early modern Bible translation, afterlife beliefs and biblical anthropology. He is one of the world s leading experts on the Protestant Bible translator George Joye. He has published in English, Dutch and Hungarian in books and peer-reviewed journals. His book on the exegetical debate between William Tyndale and George Joye entitled Translating Resurrection was published by Brill in Dr Dominika Kurek- Chomycz, Lecturer Dr Kurek-Chomycz is a Lecturer in New Testament Studies at Liverpool Hope University and a free research associate at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). Her research interests centre upon the New Testament and other early Christian writings, with a particular focus on various issues in the Pauline literature. Dr Kurek- Chomycz has published a number of articles in international journals and edited volumes, is a co-author of 2 Corinthians: A Bibliography (Peeters, 2008) and co-editor of Theologizing in the Corinthian Conflict: Studies in Exegesis and Theology of 2 Corinthians (Peeters: 2013). Dr Simon D. Podmore, Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology Dr Podmore s main interests are in systematic and philosophical theology: particularly Kierkegaard; Luther; the Numinous and religious experience; Jewish and Christian mysticism; Holocaust theology; continental philosophy of religion; and the relationships between theology, the arts, and psychotherapy. He is the author of Kierkegaard and the Self Before God: Anatomy of the Abyss (Indiana University Press, 2011) and Struggling with God: Kierkegaard and the Temptation of Spiritual Trial (James Clarke & Co., 2013). 9

10 Dom Henry Wansbrough, Alexander Jones Professor In Biblical Studies Dom Henry is a Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Ampleforth. Prior to his appointment at Liverpool Hope he was for 14 years Master of St Benet s Hall in Oxford; he lectured on New Testament at the University and served as Chair of the Theology Faculty. During his career, he has written 20 books and more than 60 articles. Professor Andrew Walls, Professor Of The History Of Missions Professor Walls began service in West Africa in 1957, working at Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, and at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he was Head of the Department of Religion. For many years he was Professor of Religious Studies and Riddoch Lecturer in Comparative Religion at the University of Aberdeen, before becoming founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World at the University of Edinburgh. He has been Visiting Professor of World Christianity at Yale and at Harvard Universities. His bestknown publications include The Missionary Movement in Christian History (Orbis 1996) and The Cross-Cultural Process in Christian History (Orbis 2002). 10
