3 The Story of the Bible: The Bible was written over fifteen hundred years. Its 66 books were written by dozens and dozens of human authors in three different languages. But at its core the Bible only tells one story. It is the story of God and his mission. That story, told across the entirety of Scripture, essentially has four parts: creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. These "parts" are more like themes than chapters. You will read all four parts of the story of God in the first book of the Bible and in the last. Creation: -We see God as. -We see what. -We see how God. Fall: -We see. -We see the effects of. Redemption: -We see pictures of. -We see God delivering on. Restoration: -We see God s. -We see God s restoration of the world.
4 The Old Testament at a Glance: The Books of Law Called the books of Moses. They tell the story of the creation of the world, the creation of Israel, and the giving of God's law. Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy The Books of History Called the Former Prophets. They give a narrative history of Israel from the entrance into the Promised Land until after the Babylonian captivity. Joshua Judges Ruth 1-2 Samuel 1-2 Kings 1-2 Chronicles Ezra Nehemiah Esther The Books of Poetry The poetic and wisdom literature from the religious life of ancient Israel. The Major Prophets Considered a part of the Former Prophets, called the Major Prophets because of their length. They record the messages of the prophets sent by God during Israel's captivities. Isaiah Jeremiah Lamentations Ezekiel Daniel The Minor Prophets Also called "the Twelve." They are only "minor" in their length. They record the messages of the prophets sent by God from the Neo-Assyrian period through the Persian period. Hosea Joel Amos Obadiah Jonah Micah Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zachariah Malachi Job Psalms Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Solomon
