3 Faculty of HEALTH SCIENCES Introduction The Faculty of Health Sciences comprises five (5) schools and each represents a specific field of study or subject discipline. Continued renewal and adaptation ensures that the Faculty of Health Sciences lead the way in health sciences. School of Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport Science (Biokinetics, Human Movement Science, Recreation Science, Sport Science, Children Kinetics and Sport Science); School of Pharmacy (Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice); School of Physiology, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences (Physiology, Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutrition Science and Consumer Sciences) and Occupational Hygiene; School of Psycho-Social Behavioural Sciences (Social Work and Psychology); and School of Nursing Science (General Nursing Science, Community Nursing Science, Obstetrical Nursing Science, Psychiatric Nursing Science, Health Science Education, Health Service Management, Health Estimation, Health Diagnosis and Treatment and Anatomy). Admission requirements: National Senior Certificate; A minimum APS-score of 16; and Applications are subject to internal selection with regard to kind of sport and specialisation. Objective and career possibilities of this program: To train sport scientists, who specialise in strategic kinds of sport on basis of their knowledge and skills in order to: Evaluate people s ability to participate in sports; Analyse sport to determine opponents game patterns and Fields of Study Diploma in Sport Science (Program code for application form: : G101P) Specialisation in rugby and athletics.

4 strategies; Analyse sport to identify strong and weak points of persons participating in sports; Analyse fitness to determine gaps in fitness; Analyse errors in the execution and application of skills; and Help sportsmen/sportswomen in the rectifying of identified gaps. Most important subjects: The most important subjects include Sport Science and Human Movement Science. Manner of presentation and duration of programme: Die program word voltyds aangebied en strek oor drie (3) jaar. Admission to postgraduate studies: On successful completion of the diploma, a student can obtain a BA degree in Health Sciences if he/she takes the compulsory extra modules with specialisation in Human Movement Science. On completion of the BA degree the student qualifies for the same opportunities as any other graduate student with Human Movement Science as major subject. BA Health Sciences The following three (3) curriculums are presented in the program BA Health Sciences: Human Movement and Psychology (Program code for application form: : G301P) Recreation and Psychology (Program code for application form: : G302P) Recreation and Tourism Management (Program code for application form: : G303P) Human Movement and Psychology (Program code for application form: : G301P) Admission requirements: National Senior Certificate with university entrance; and A minimum APS-score of 22. Human Movement study is the study of the human in movement/ physical activity, as well as the influence thereof on the human in its entirety. During the study (full-time and covers a period of three (3) years) attention is given to the perceptual-motoric, physiological, psychological and biomechanical principles which are relevant when humans participate in physical activities. The application of different measurement methods and exercise to improve achievement ability, evaluation and treatment of sport injuries, improvement of health and quality of life, as well as movement skills form part of the course.

5 With Human Movement Science as one of the two (2) major subjects a student can obtain a BA or BSc degree (see BSc programs elsewhere in this booklet). Objective of the curriculum: To enable students to assist sportsmen/sportswomen scientifically with applicable evaluation of sport achievement potential, the compilation of general sport conditioning programs, training in some kinds of sport, sport talent identification as well as the organisation and administration of sport; To give students the knowledge and skills to inform people about exercise that can prevent disease; To analyse body composition with regard to health; and To help in cases of basic medical emergencies and injuries. Career possibilities: Sport scientist; Sport organiser; Sport administrator; Fitness instructor; Exercise expert; and Movement scientist. Admission to postgraduate studies: Education Students who are interested in education can obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Enquire at the Faculty of Education Sciences about admission and prerequisites. Honors programs Successful completion of both the BA and BSc programs enables students to make use of the opportunity to apply for the applicable honors programs (specialising in Biokinetics, Children Kinetics or Sport Science). Admission to this program is subject to a selection process at the end of the third year as well as available capacity in the subject group. Biokinetics The biokineticist aspires to improve participants health and physical wellbeing by means of scientifically compiled and individual-aimed exercise programs. Rehabilitation programs are presented for persons with clinical diagnosed problems like cardiorespiratoric, orthopaedic, hypokinetic, metabolic, psycho-emotional problems, etc. After completion of the specialisation program, the student must acquire experience in an accredited Biokinetics practice for one (1) year before full registration as a Biokineticist can be completed at the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

6 Children Kinetics Qualified persons in this field work with young children usually between the ages of three to ten years. The programs are aimed at the development of perceptual-motoric skills, as well as sport specific skill-programs. Students are also trained to present motoric remedial programs for children with specific motoric, mental, emotional, social, learning or neurological disadvantages. This work often forms part of a multidisciplinary team of other experts such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, medical doctors, psychologists and biokineticists. Sport Science The sport scientist renders professional, scientific support services with regard to the development and improvement of achievement ability in sport. The contribution extends from the identification and development of new sport talent at a young age, to the testing and scientific optimisation of elite sportsmen and sportswomen s achievement potential in order to assist the trainer in his/her tasks. The sport scientist s work includes: Sport physiological evaluation of achievement potential; Scientific sport specific exercise program design and guidance aimed at individuals; Sport talent identification; Sport psychological evaluation, guidance and motivation; Sport nutrition; Sport management and administration; and Sport anthropometrics. The successful completion of the honors degree also gives the
