6 Jim Ondak, PMP BS, PMP West Haven Cohort Instructor Jim Ondak has worked as a project manager, software engineer, and physicist for over 40 years, successfully leading numerous cross-functional project and development teams in software product and application development and portfolio management. He earned PMP certification from the Project Management Institute in 2002 and was certified as an IBM Senior Project Manager in Some of the high-visibility projects he has worked on include the start-up of IBM s Healthcare and Life Sciences division; the Charters of Freedom project for the National Archives, creating a digital imaging system to analyze the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence; design and development of a leading laser keratectomy system (the procedure today known as LASIK) for a successful start-up and eventual world leader in its field; and cellular telephone system performance modeling for AT&T Bell Laboratories. Jim was also a highly rated chair instructor at the IBM Global Services Institute, where he taught new employees about IBM s processes, methodologies, and basically how to survive and prosper as a consultant. He is a currently a project manager and consultant working for IBM s Integrated Product Development (IPD) Process Architecture, Innovation and Technology group. Jim holds a BS in Physics from Canisius College and is an avid tennis player and cyclist. 6

8 Module 2: Project Planning I June 3 July 8, 2015 Week off: July 15, 2015 This module will cover the following: Overview of the project planning process group First key steps of project planning Creating a project management plan Defining the scope of a project Developing a Work Breakdown Structure Define activities Sequence activities Estimate the duration and resource burden for project activities 8

9 Module 3: Project Planning II July 22 August 26, 2015 Week off: September 2, 2015 This module will cover the following: How to develop the project schedule by utilizing project scheduling software tool Project costs and resource leveling The role of project management in the contracting process. Quality planning and the importance of quality metrics in a project plan The steps in development of a risk management plan 9

10 Module 4: Project Execution, Control, and Closure September 9 October 14, 2015 Week off: October 21, 2015 This module will cover the following: Overview of project execution, project control and monitoring, and project closure process groups How to use the project management plan to optimize execution, develop and manage a highly effective project team, calculate earned value, and implement course corrections The difference between quality control and quality assurance and how to construct a control chart How to close a project or project phase and explain the project manager s role in project closure 10

11 Module 5: Special Topics in Project Management October 28 December 9, 2015 This module will cover the following: Unique challenges and issues project managers face in leading a project team Communication management Negotiation Conflict management Leading and influencing without authority The role of a Project Management Office Project management standards in an organization 11

12 Admission Requirements Candidates for admission to the certificate program are required to have two years of professional experience. An undergraduate degree is not a requirement; qualified students from all backgrounds are encouraged to submit applications 12

16 PMI Certification Credentials The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is a good entry-level certification if you re new to project management, or still figuring out your career path. The Project Management Professional (PMP) is the most important globally-recognized and independently validated credential for project managers, perfect if you have demonstrated experience and competence in leading project teams. The Program Management Professional (PgMP) is designed for those who manage multiple, complex projects to achieve strategic and organizational results. The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) is designed for practitioners who utilize Agile approaches to project management in their projects. The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) is a specialty credential that demonstrates competence in assessing project risks, mitigating threats and capitalizing on opportunities. The PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) is a specialty credential for practitioners who want to focus on developing and maintaining project schedules. The OPM3 Professional Certification recognizes your experience with, and practical knowledge of, organization project management and project management maturity. 16
