2 Centria University of Applied Sciences The Center for Fur Design Photos: Anni-Maria Weckman, NOVIA Centria University of Applied Sciences/ The Center for Fur Design is the only University specialized in fur education. The Center for Fur Design begun its University degree in 1996 and has grown stronger and stronger with the support of the fur farmers of the region, fur trade in Finland, professional and international visitors who have worked with us to construct this unique education. The Center for Fur Design is situated in Ostrobothnia in the middle of the most important fur farming area in the Finland. Pietarsaari 2

Beside own stuff The Center for Fur Design has a wide network of the guest lecturers from business life and from abroad. Mentor in the many workshops has been professor Basil Kardasis (Royal College of Art, London). Professor Kardasis has years of international experience in the world of fur, design and teaching. He, among his various activities, was Design Director of Saga Design centre in Denmark and is presently Creative Director of Studio NAFA in Canada. He is renowned for his passionate aims for excellence and creativity, while having fun with Fur The Natural Fabric. 4

5 EU PROJECTS FutureFURstudio The Center for Fur Design has carried out several project financed by the EU, provincial federations and municipalities. During the projects The Center for Fur Design has been developed into a know-how centre for fur education and development in the fur trade. The FutureFURstudio project serves the whole fur trade and design field: companies, designers and students. The aim is also to encourage the use of fur in design products for example in furniture and also in totally new areas. In the project models of activities corresponding to the needs of the design companies will be developed, an open and innovative environment will be created and the design knowledge will be developed on international basis. The FutureFURstudio will create new networks between designers and manufactures. FutureFURstudio project develops also different kind of education modules in English. 5

6 DESIGN The Center for Fur Design has done product development work for years with international designers and craftmen from different sectors. Product development work has been carried out through the creative workshops, where international groups work closely together as team. As a result there has been created several collections with different themes. Within the workshops The Center has done co-operation with different companies and organizations in Finland and abroad. The Center has done constant work for finding new people and new ways of using fur. Our belief is that the wonders of fur are endless and our aim is to maintain and broaden its use and its beauty and use it with respect. 18 COLLECTIONS SAIL AWAY 2012 The SAIL AWAY workshop combined the expertise of Centria University of Applied Sciences and Baltic Yachts, a company world-famous for its yachts of high quality. Fabulous Ostrobothnian fur and leather materials were used for creating innovative products for the interior of luxurious sailing boats. An international group of creative designers from various fields gathered in the SAIL AWAY workshop in Pietarsaari. Inspired by the sea, yachts and the introductory presentation by the workshop mentor, the talented team of designers planned products suitable for yachts. 21 Cocoon Photo: Pertti Puranen COLLECTIONS GRAFFITI 2012 An intensive three day GRAFFITI workshop combined five designers from different countries: Diana Agajan, Designer, Ukraine Robin Kerr, Footwear/Fashion Designer, England Elena Marradi, journalist & designer, Italy Kim Segervall, tattoo artist, Finland Malin Simons, sculpturer, Finland Marianne Uusitalo, textile designer, Finland The workshop was mentored by Professor Basil Kardasis (Royal College of Art, London). The co-operative companies were: Atlantic Leather (Iceland), Ahlskog Leather, Finnish Fur Farmers, Panfur 2000 Oy & SKA (Italy). Papers were sponsored by UPM-Kymmene & Décor Studio. The GRAFFITI -collection will be exhibited to the international audience in several leather- and fur fair in Europe. 21

32 INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION CENTRIA/The Center for Fur Design has for many years done co-operation with Universities in China, Italy, Belgium and Scandinavia. The Center for Fur Design does also versatile co-operation with many international companies and fur magazines. Students have done working placement in companies in France, Italy, Greece and Ukraine. International magazines, Infur and Arpel Fur, have published wide articles about projects carried out in the The Center for Fur Design. 33 FUR EDUCATION Centria University of Applied Sciences offers a unique programme covering the entire process from learning how to handle fur and understanding the raw material to designing and making products in fur and leather. Our aim is to let you explore the versatility, usability and applicability of fur. 34 COMING SOON The tutor of the module is Manabu Kaminaga, designer/patternmaker (speciality draping), Japan/Denmark. Manabu Kaminaga is a talented designer, who is specialized in patternmaking and draping. He graduated 1988 from Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. Kaminaga has worked as a patternmaker and done draping for several companies mostly in Denmark. Year 2009 he has started own business Kaminaga workshop company. Fur Design and Pattern making Make your "dream" pattern by draping. From Monday 20 th to Friday 24 th May 2013 Price: 600 Registration latest 2 nd MAY Kaminaga has done freelance draping and patterns for example to Hansen, Charlotte Sparre, Stine goya, Brunns bazar, Josephus Thimister, Vilbol de Ace, Movers clouth, Ncurv.dk, Annhagen/Jørgen Simonsen, Baum und pferdgarten, Heart Made by Julie fagerholt copenhagen, Birger et Mikkelsen and for Work Zone as well as for Xiao Lan company. He has also several year of experience from teaching pattern making and draping in different universities and academies worldwide. He has also worked as a course guidance/fur design for several design students at Saga Design center in Denmark. Moreover he has done project work for GLERUPS FILT.DK and researched new technique for felt fabric, making a shape of garment without using darts and finally made a felt collection. 34
