1 Redefining what s possible The Create Development Newsletter Issue 3 Summer welcome! I am delighted once more to present our latest newsletter packed with examples of how we can work together to redefine what s possible. Within these articles are masses of ideas demonstrating how we can better include, challenge and support all young people whatever the learning environment I am sure there is something for everyone. I am particularly pleased we have a special focus on family learning. With research now showing that children are at their least active in evenings and weekends I m convinced that for us all to make a sustainable impact we have to engage with parents/carers and families to promote active learning. One of the truly joyous and important things we do in life is to actively play with our children. We are proud to be supporting the Welsh Rugby Union to embed parental engagement into their Little Stars programme and you can read about the roll-out of our own Family FUNS programme this side of the bridge. As we formally launch Learn to Compete, Compete to Learn in the UK, Create continues to expand our horizons and develop our international services. Pam Stevenson has just returned from an amazing trip to Peru adding to our work in South Africa, Dubai and soon South Korea. This is in addition to the amazing work Brendan Bolger our partner at FUNdamental Success is doing in Ireland. Closer to home, watch this space for some news of how we are working with a key partner to transform the way coach development is delivered across London. Ronnie Heath Ronnie Heath Managing Director. In this issue... 2 hot topic family learning and health Create Development are working with a range of partners to roll out Family FUNS, a flexible solution as a way to encourage families to play and have fun together whilst developing their health, physical, personal and social skills. Why Family Learning & Health? Recent government figures on childhood obesity demonstrate the huge challenges we face and how essential it is to get our children and young people active: 1 in 4 Early Years children overweight or obese 1 in 3 at Year 6 By 2050 projected 90% of 5-2 year olds will be obese Government health target is an aspiration to create a downward trend in excess weight levels Family socio-economic factors directly influence obesity levels We believe that key to reversing this trend is to better engage families in their children s physical development, providing them with the tools and confidence to spend time being active and playing as a family. Just as families who read with their children from a young age leads to better literacy levels and more importantly a love of reading, we believe the same applies to physical literacy and a lifelong love of physical activity. In addition, as well as a significant impact on children s physical development and health, we believe that physical activity has the potential to develop a whole range of personal, social and emotional skills and wellbeing and the family plays a pivotal role in this. Projects include: National Governing Body: Welsh Rugby Union s Little Stars programme Supporting the Welsh Rugby Union on a wide ranging programme for 3-5, 5-7 and 7+ children and parents in Wales delivered through their Participation Officers. Schools and Leisure Centres: Trowbridge Family FUNS InspireED Journeys Focusing on Early Years age children and based within local Leisure Centres and Schools, this programme looks to engage families during the week and weekends. Health Authority: Health Lottery - Newcastle A multi-agency project with schools targeting families and children with low physical activity levels within areas of deprivation. To find out more about Family FUNS click on the at the bottom of the page or alternatively you can contact us directly to discuss a potential partnership. 3 learn to compete, compete to learn launched! Loved it! I learnt a lot about personalising and running competitions that are inclusive and are personally and socially challenging. Dominique Briggs, Primary PE coordinator, Holy Trinity C of E School. Create Development are delighted to launch Learn to Compete, Compete to Learn, a ground-breaking resource to support you in your delivery of competition. It provides a simple but innovative way to promote and embed healthy competition in all young people. It provides fun, practical solutions to teaching the building blocks of competition, ensuring all young people are equipped with the skills to compete positively. It outlines a fresh new way to approach the teaching of competition whilst supporting you to provide every child and young person with a fun, fair and positive environment in which to learn to compete in sport and life. Learn to Compete, Compete to Learn will challenge your perceptions around competition. It explores how to use competition effectively as a fantastic vehicle to include, challenge and support every child and young person. Considering I have been working within competitive school sport for a number of years I have taken so many ideas away to improve my delivery. Joanne Newman, School Games Organiser. 4 in the spotlight chislehurst & sidcup grammar school In this case study, Richard Wallbridge, Director of Sport & Performance and Danny Gower, Head of PE, at Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School outline the changes they have made with the support of Create Development and the impact these changes have made. These have already led to Chislehurst & Sidcup being Highly Commended at the Youth Sport Trust s recent National Innovation Awards in the category Excellent Secondary PE department secondary schools with outstanding, innovative PE pedagogy and provision that meets the needs and aspirations of all learners Click on the at the bottom of the page to read the full case study. create continues its international expansion! We are continuing to build and expand upon our services abroad, which started with a significant project in South Africa in 2008 and 2009 and have been continuing at speed this year, including some real progress for our partner company in Ireland, FUNdamental Success, led by Brendan Bolger. At the end of January, Create Development Directors Ronnie Heath and John Parsons were invited by The United Arab Emirates Professional Development Group to deliver our trilogy of innovative courses to British curriculum teachers in Dubai. This came from a recommendation from the Dubai Affiliated Secondary Schools Association (DASSA). I learnt how to deliver a realistic, progressive, multi-skill curriculum. A thoroughly enjoyable, informative and inspirational way of looking at teaching and learning. I would certainly recommend it. Ben Parnell, PE teacher, Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) More recently, Create Development s Inclusion Lead, Pam Stevenson got back from Peru where she undertook a review of Inclusive Physical Education and we have been asked to deliver 10 days of training in South Korea later in the year. 5 national ASD conference last few places! It is essential that young people with autism are equipped with the physical skills required to support their levels of independence, self-esteem and selfconfidence. This enables them to broaden their experiences and provides them with more choices and opportunities to become active in the community. There will be opportunities for delegates to focus on mainstream or specialist settings and there will be a choice of Early Years/Key Stage 1 or Key Stages 2/3/4 or Young Adults. We are also delighted to announce Ros Blackburn as our keynote speaker! Click below for a full list of speakers and presenters! 20% of profits will be donated to the National Autistic Society.
