1 01. Introduction Welcome to the Installation of MITA Virtual Private Network Installation Guide. The system allows access to the MAGNET services from your Internet connection in a secure manner. Before starting the installation, ensure that the following are available: The Operating System installed on the workstation should be listed in Minimum Operating Requirements (Page 4). A workstation connected to the Internet via a MITA Internet connection or another Internet Service Provider. Reboot the workstation, if another software installation was performed prior to the MITA VPN Client installation. Ensure that Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service is disabled in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Refer to Disabling the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service section (Page 13) at the end of the document, if necessary. Administrator privileges on the workstation are obligatory. Security token (hardware or software based) supplied by MITA. A clean (fresh) installation of MITA VPN Client software is required if upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista or Windows 7. This is done by manually uninstalling any old VPN Software first, then after the upgrade, reinstall the VPN software as indicated in Installation of the MITA VPN Client Software Section.! Once connected to the VPN, the access granted over the Internet is identical to the access granted from the Government Internet. Therefore services such as MSN Messenger will not connect. Minimum Operating Requirements The following information lists the minimum system requirements to support the installation of the MITA VPN Client software: 02.1 Minimum Hardware Requirements Pentium class processor or greater x64 (64-bit) or x86 (32bit) processors 5MB hard disk space for Windows Operating System 256MB RAM for Windows XP 512MB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows Software Requirements Operating Systems Windows bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) Windows 8 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) Windows 7 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) Windows Vista 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64), including Service Packs 1 and 2 (SP1/SP2) Windows XP SP2+ 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 or later Other Operating Systems contact MITA Service Call Centre (Tel: ) for further information Internet Browsers An internet browser shall be used to perform the initial installation of the MITA VPN Client software. Google Chrome Internet Browser does not support the installation. MITA VPN Client software does not work on virtualization software such as VMware and Parallels Desktop. 2 of 8

3 03. Installation of the MITA VPN Client Software 1. Open the Internet Browser and log on to 2. Click on the Software link. 3. Click on the appropriate Operating System from the list. 4. Click on MITA VPN.exe to initialise the download of the VPN Client installation software. 5. A File Download Security Warning dialogue box will appear, asking whether to Run or Save the file. Click on Run to download the installation file temporarily. 3 of 8

4 6. On the Internet Explorer Security Warning dialogue box click Run to proceed with the software installation. 7. If Windows Vista or Windows 7 is being used, the dialogue box for a confirmation appears. Click Allow or Continue to proceed with the installation. 8. From this point forward, no further user intervention is required. Once the installation is complete, reboot the workstation. When Windows is reloaded, a new VPN icon will appear in the Taskbar, as shown with an arrow below. 4 of 8

5 04. Connecting to the MITA VPN Service 1. To connect to the MITA VPN click once on the Taskbar VPN icon marked with an arrow below. Then click the Connect button. 2. When prompted, enter your username and password, and then click OK. The username shall not include CORP\. The password shall consist of the CORP Password and the number shown on the Security Token. While the VPN Client software is trying to establish a connection, the text items in the AnyConnect dialogue box will grey out. 3. Once the user is authenticated, a banner, similar to the one shown below will be displayed. The text in the banner notifies the user that he/she forms part of a particular VPN Group (depending on the access rights required). To accept the conditions provided in the banner and confirm the connection to the VPN, click the Accept button. 4. A number of checks will be done automatically during the establishment of the VPN connection, in which no user intervention is required. These checks also include the installation of any new updates on the VPN Client Software. 5 of 8

6 5. Once the checks are complete, the VPN connection will be established. To verify VPN connectivity, confirm that the VPN icon in the Taskbar has a Closed Padlock on top of it. 6. If the mouse is moved on the VPN icon while the VPN connection is established, a message similar to the one below will appear. 7. Another method to verify that the VPN connection is established, is by clicking once on the VPN icon in the Taskbar, and a small dialogue box (show below) will appear with the text VPN: Connected to vpn.secure.gov.mt. 6 of 8

7 05. Disconnecting from the MITA VPN Service To disconnect from the MITA VPN click once on the Taskbar VPN icon marked with an arrow below. Then click the Disconnect button. 06. Disabling the Internet Connection Sharing Service To disable the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service for Windows Vista and Windows 7, follow the instructions below. If this service is not disabled, the MITA VPN Client software will not be able to connect. 1. Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage Network Connections. 2. Right-click the shared network connection, and then click Properties. If prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation by clicking Continue. 3. Click the Sharing tab, clear the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box, and then click OK. 7 of 8
