4 Open Letter to Mentor Dear Mentor: Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! You have been requested as a Mentor for one of our students at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Each student is required to have a field ministry experience as part of their degree. Southeastern believes that your role in the life and ministry preparation of our students is vital. Paul instructs Timothy, What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also (2 Tim 2:2, ESV). Southeastern s mission is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by equipping students to serve the Church and fulfill the Great Commission and we are grateful for the opportunity to partner with you to accomplish this mission. To that end, I want to make you aware of what is expected of a mentor so that you can make an informed decision. First, the Mentor must have significant experience (i.e., minimum of five years vocational ministry experience) and wisdom in the ministry and have obtained a minimum of the Master of Divinity degree from an accredited seminary or a Masters degree in the field in which the student will be supervised. Second, the Mentor must be willing to teach in accordance with and not contrary to Southeastern s confessional documents: the Abstract of Principles, the Baptist Faith and Message (2000), the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy and the Danvers Statement on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (these documents can be found on our website ( Third, the Mentor must be willing to help develop and supervise the student in counseling ministry for a minimum of 12 weeks. This will include formally evaluating the student s progress and making suggestions. Finally, the Mentor will assign and discuss reading assignments relative to the mentorship. With that in mind, I want to encourage you and thank you for your willingness to consider this opportunity to pour your life into this student. As you teach and model the life of a Christian counselor you are impacting the next generation of counselors! If I can be of any service to you or if you have any questions about the Mentored Internship, please do not hesitate to contact me. God bless. Servant of the King, Dr. Steven P. When you complete your syllabus for this course, it must be returned to the EQUIP Office no later than two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which the student will complete the internship. The EQUIP Office will contact the Field Supervisor with approval or revisions before the beginning of the semester. If you have any questions or need any further assistance in the development of a syllabus please contact the EQUIP Office Administrative Assistant, Lindsay Lewis at (919) The following should be instrumental in developing your syllabus for this class: SEBTS Mission: Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary seeks to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by equipping students to serve the church and fulfill the Great Commission. SEBTS Core Competencies: (1) Spiritual Formation Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue an authentically Christian way of life, manifested by trust in God, obedience to Christ s commands, and love of God and neighbor. (2) Biblical Exposition Demonstrate the ability to properly and effectively interpret, apply, and communicate the Scriptures. (3) Theological Integration Demonstrate the ability to understand and apply the doctrines of Christianity to life and ministry. (4) Ministry Preparation Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and Christian disposition necessary for ministry and leadership in the church and the world. (5) Critical Thinking and Communication Demonstrate the ability to think critically, argue persuasively, and communicate clearly. Every class at SEBTS has the development of these Core Competencies as its goal. SEBTS Course Description BCO7900 Mentored Counseling Internship is a counseling experience in an appropriate field setting with an approved supervisor. (A student may gain up to 9 total credit hours, but no more than 3 credit hours in any one semester.) 6 E Q U I P M e n t o r e d C o u n s e l i n g I n t e r n s h i p A p p l i c a t i o n
7 The Syllabus for the Mentored Internship should include the following: OBJECTIVES The student and the Field Supervisor should collaborate on the counseling mentorship and write out the goal and specific objectives for the mentorship based on the Core Competencies of SEBTS (see above). This is a vital part of the syllabus and must be included for the syllabus to be accepted. ASSIGNMENTS Each student is expected to be involved in a minimum of 45 hours of counseling ministry as assigned by the Field Supervisor (in addition to the mentorship meetings). These hours may include direct observation of counseling with the field supervisor but must include a minimum of 20 hours of counseling with the student as the primary counselor. The syllabus should reflect this requirement. Each student must be assigned a minimum of 12 pages of writing. This can include verbatims (detailed reports of counseling sessions), homework handouts, etc. The syllabus should reflect this requirement and the due dates should be reflected on a Course Schedule. Reading o SEBTS requires each student to read the following works: 1 st Counseling Mentorship (replacing Practicum 1) Critical Stages of Biblical Counseling by Jay Adams (2004) 2 nd Counseling Mentorship (replacing Practicum 2) Intentional Interviewing and Counseling: Facilitating Client Development in a Multicultural Society, 7th edition. By Alan Ivey, Mary Ivey, and Carlos Zalaquett (2009). 3 rd Counseling Mentorship (replacing Practicum 3) Counseling the Hard Cases by Stuart Scott and Heath Lambert (2012) o o In addition to the above, the Field Supervisor must assign a minimum of 300 pages of reading in the area of counseling. Both the SEBTS requirements and the mentor s assigned reading must be included in the syllabus. Due dates for these books should be set by the Field Supervisor and reflected in a Course Schedule. The student should be assigned a writing assignment on the reading required by the Field Supervisor. For example, a 4-5 page summary/analysis (3-4 page summary, 1-2 analysis) of the work(s). Due dates for this assignment should be reflected in a Course Schedule. MENTORSHIP The Field Supervisor is responsible to set up counseling supervision meetings for each student. These meetings should generally be in person and equal no less than 15 hours of face-time over the course of the semester (i.e., 1 hour per week for 15 weeks). The schedule for these meetings should be reflected in a Course Schedule. COURSE SCHEDULE The Field Supervisor (along with the student) should develop a Course Schedule that covers the entire semester and includes meetings, topics and due dates for reading and other assignments. 7 E Q U I P M e n t o r e d C o u n s e l i n g I n t e r n s h i p A p p l i c a t i o n
