Ph.D. Candidate, School of Church Ministries mnave255@students.sbts.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an overview of biblical and theological aspects of womanhood. Cultural and practical issues related to biblical womanhood will be addressed through the content of the conference, with particular attention to how each of these aspects contributes to the design and mission of women. COURSE OBJECTIVES Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate the following competencies: 1. Draw upon the whole counsel of Scripture to articulate a biblical perspective on womanhood in the home and church within the framework of a comprehensive Kingdom worldview. 2. Evaluate contemporary cultural understandings of womanhood from the perspective of conservative evangelical orthodoxy, particularly in terms of leadership roles specific and unique to men and women. 3. Apply a biblical theology of womanhood to practical situations in marriage and motherhood. 4. Articulate a theological framework for women s ministry in the local church, with particular emphasis on the directive found in Titus 2 for women to disciple other women. CONFESSIONAL CONTEXT Your professor holds without reservation to the doctrinal commitments of the Abstract of Principles (1859) and the Baptist Faith and Message (2000) as accurately representing biblical truth. The professor s understanding of the nature of Scripture is summarized in these confessional documents and in the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy (1978). This course will be taught within the context of this set of confessional convictions as the professor gladly submits himself to the accountability of Holy Scripture and to the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention. 1

Event Attendance. Students are expected to attend every session of the True Woman Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana on September Current SBTS students must register for course credit through Moodle. Conference registration with True Woman will be taken care of through your course registration. Non SBTS students can also receive course credit by registering online through 2. Personal Interaction Paper. Students will complete a page analytical paper in which they will reflect thoughtfully on the True Woman Conference sessions and course reading assignments. Students will be expected to interact critically with what they have learned and how that can be applied in their own lives and ministries. Students should address a minimum of three topics in this reflection paper and offer a minimum of two developed points for each topic. Personal Interaction Paper Due Date: November 9, Reading Reports. Each student is expected to complete reading all of the course texts as indicated in the syllabus. Students will assess the percentage of reading completed on a reading report to be submitted through Moodle by the posted due date. Reading Report Due Date: November 16,
3 COURSE GRADING 1. Event Attendance 25% 2. Personal Interaction Paper 50% 3. Reading Report 25% Most assignments will be graded by the professor s grading assistant. The professor has full confidence in this individual s ability to accurately evaluate each student s work. If a student has a concern about a grade that he or she has received, then the student is expected to discuss the matter with the grading assistant. If the student still has significant concern, then he or she may discuss the matter with the professor. However, please note that only in an unusual circumstance would the professor change the original grade. Grading for this course will follow the instructor s grading scale. A points B points C points D points A points B points C points D points B points C points D points F WP WF I Fewer than 63 points Withdrawal Pass Withdrawal Fail Incomplete (no grades of incomplete will be issued for this course) LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY Personal time management is a top priority for ministry leaders and will be an important element in mastering the content of this course. Assignments not submitted by the posted due date are considered late and earn an automatic extension penalty of 20%. Late assignments are then due no later than the end of the semester, no exceptions. No grades of incomplete will be issued for this course. If a late assignment is not received by the end of the semester, an automatic grade of F is earned for the assignment and the course. All assignments are to be submitted on Moodle. STYLE All papers should be submitted using the guidelines found in the Southern Seminary Style Manual, which is available in the Lifeway Christian Bookstore and online on the seminary website. PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is using the words or ideas of someone else without giving appropriate credit. Students are always expected to credit sources appropriately. Students who plagiarize will be reported to the Dean of Students, resulting in disciplinary action up to and including failing this course and academic dismissal. 3
