1 Open House Day 2015: Social Media Tipsheet For more information, contact: Lucy Arnold, We re so excited that you ll be participating in the 11th annual Open House Day on Saturday, June 13! Following please find an overview of how the Connecticut Office of Tourism (COT) will be promoting the event on social media, as well as ideas for how you can promote your Open House Day activities on social. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lucy Arnold at the phone number/ address listed above. Connecticut Office of Tourism Social Media Promotion The COT is promoting local Open House Day events statewide through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, as well as by encouraging media and bloggers to post about Open House Day on their social networks. Where possible, these posts will be geo targeted to reach Connecticut residents. Below is a brief snapshot of how we ll be promoting Open House Day and our participating partners: Facebook: Reach: 219,000+ Weekly posts about Open House Day partners and destinations; links to full list of activities on CTvisit.com (available here: o Posts also may include links to Open House Day, media coverage and related news (geotargeted) Open House Day 2015 Photo Album featuring images of partner destinations that are shared with us. o Current album here: Event invitation for Connecticut residents to RSVP to Open House Day o Invite Here: Facebook Notes listing Open House Day list of activities by region (links also listed in Event invitation) o Local Activities in Fairfield County: o Local Activities in Greater New Haven: o Local Activities in Litchfield Hills: o Local Activities in Mystic Country: o Local Activities in River Valley: Twitter: Reach: 15,000+ Frequent tweets about partner activities pre, during and post event; links to full list of activities Live tweets on day of Open House Day (June 13) Links to photo albums, media coverage and news related to Open House Day
2 All tweets will use the hashtag #CTOpenHouse Instagram: Reach: 2,000+ We ll be creating weekly Open House Day images of partner participants to share with our Instagram community Pinterest: Reach: 2,000+ We ll be creating an Open House Day Pinterest board, including photos from partner destinations websites o Pinterest Map Here: Help Us Help You! For partners that would like to be prominently featured on CT social media channels for Open House Day: Send us photos of your destination to be featured in our Facebook and Pinterest albums! o Please provide proper photo credit and usage rights (i.e. let us know if/when the photo expires, if we have permission to use in print/online and who the photo should be credited to) o Tips: Photos should be beautiful, high res and engaging o Photos should represent your destination (either the exterior or interior) or feature an activity that users could find when visiting for Open House Day Send us fun facts about your Open House Day activities or about your destination in general. o Note: While we want fun facts, please make sure you share the basic information about what you are doing (time, location and general activities) to Jean.Herbert@ct.gov to be sure it is included on the CTvisit.com website. Follow Visit Connecticut on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest and if you have accounts for your destinations that we should follow, please let us know. *Note: While we will do our best to promote partners equally, we may not be able to call out each individual destination on a Facebook status update however, we will look for additional ways to highlight partners through photo albums, post event recaps, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. How Your Destination Can Leverage Social Media for Open House Day Is your destination active on social media? If so, check out a few recommendations below for maximizing exposure through your channels. Facebook: Engage with your Facebook community by inviting them to your Open House Day activities through an event invitation; generate buzz through regular posts; continue to drive engagement through pre and post event photo albums and recaps of how the event went at your destination. Be sure to follow Visit Connecticut on Facebook for post ideas and the latest information on Open House Day. 06/03/2015 Page 2 of 5
3 Event Invitations: If your destination has a Facebook page, create a Facebook invite for your fans. You can send this to your followers. Include details about any special deals, activities, hours you ll be open, etc. Ask your followers to share the invite with their Facebook friends. Posts: Post updates to your Facebook page about Open House Day and your activities. Share Visit Connecticut posts: Check out the Visit Connecticut Facebook page and share relevant status updates with your fans. Photo Albums: Post photos from your Open House Day event to Facebook and create a Connecticut Open House Day Album. Tag Visit Connecticut in the photos for further promotion. *Note: On Facebook you have the option of geo targeting your posts (by clicking on the GPS looking icon in the status update box in the bottom menu). Given that Open House Day is for Connecticut residents, please use this option and choose Connecticut as your location when posting about the event. Twitter: Create a schedule of tweets leading up to Open House Day, highlighting activities and what visitors can expect by coming to your destination. Remember to keep tweets to Twitter s 140 character limit. Use Twitter hashtag #CTOpenHouse to make your tweets easily searchable to people looking for information on Open House Day. Want to make sure your tweet is within the 140 character limit? Use Topics to tweet might be the specials you are offering at your property, interesting fun facts about your destination, your proximity to other CT destinations/attractions participating in Open House Day, behind the scenes photos of your team getting ready for the day, etc. Remember, that photos take up space in your tweet s character count so leave extra room when inserting a photo. Instagram: If you have an Instagram account, use visuals to showcase what your destination is offering for Open House Day. Behind the scenes photos of your destination or your team getting ready for the day usually perform well on this channel. Repost images from Visit Connecticut s account 06/03/2015 Page 3 of 5
4 Use the #CTOpenHouse hashtag to make sure users can search for images around Open House Day Pinterest: If you have a Pinterest profile, pin photos/images leading up to Open House Day to drive excitement. Repin images from Visit Connecticut s boards. Pin images from your Open House Day event post event to drive further awareness/interest. YouTube: If you have access to a camera, record a video message telling your community what you have planned for Open House Day. Oftentimes, video content is more compelling than text and it s not too difficult to develop, even if you just use the camera in your smartphone. In the video, provide a visual sneak peek of the types of things your audience may see during Open House Day that they wouldn t see during a regular visit. If you re recording a video, make sure to do so in good lighting and in a place that is quiet. After you record the video, you can upload it onto YouTube and then share via other channels (Facebook, Twitter and e newsletter). Promotions: If budget allows, promotions are always great ways to generate excitement and interest in your destination. It s also a great way to grow a fan base. For example, offer a limited number of Twitter followers an additional discount (or special incentive) for Open House Day (for example a free ticket admission as opposed to 50% off or a special behind the scenes tour or demonstration to the first 50 guests). Ask people to follow your channel and answer a specific question with a designated hashtag to receive the special promotion. You can then select a limited number of people at random to receive the discount and then direct message them to provide them their discount code. o Example: We re giving away 10 FREE tickets! For a chance to win, follow us and tweet what you re excited to see when you visit (reply w/ #CTOpenHouse) We recommend setting a time frame/quantity limit. We would be happy to discuss if you have questions on how to execute. Don t Have Social Media Accounts for your Destination? If you don t have social media pages, reach out to some of your loyal visitors and encourage them to post about Open House Day on their personal social channels. A personal phone call, letter or will go a long way in encouraging them to support your event. And don t forget about the destinations that are in your local area. Take a look at the Open House Day schedule and see what other nearby destinations are participating and work to strike a partnership where you can create a joint flyer (or a joint Facebook event) that includes a listing of several Open House Day activities in the area. By working together, you provide residents in your area a larger incentive to make the visit during Open House Day (and of course, you potentially cut down the costs of creating promotional material). 06/03/2015 Page 4 of 5
