2 PEOPLE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN SYSTEMS We will not reap the long term systemic benefits of ICT in health if individuals do not feel a personal gain at the moment of use. 3/14 CLINICAL PROCESSES ARE STRATEGICAL Maybe for a paradox disease is not strategical in an healthcare process. In fact, patient has to be focus for physician, nurse, logistic, administrative, CIO, and manager in hospital. ICT technology in hospital knows a compliance and some good applications for clinical processes if all systems are integrated or they work with an important level of the interoperability. 4/14

3 INTEROPERABILITY IN A NEW FRAMEWORK: CLINICAL PROCESSES Digitizing core clinical activities is an important start. However, the real value happens when core delivery becomes knowledge driven, not just data driven. Finally it s the time of clinical processes with a new framework: openness, interoperability and collaboration. 5/14 THE FUTURE AND CLOUD COMPUTING FOR ehealth The use of ICT in health is increasing dramatically: it means that keeping inhouse systems up to date is both expensive and time consuming. Cloud gives lower overall costs, increases access, provides scalability to the demand for health services. 6/14

4 7/14 WHY REDUCING ehealth INVESTEMENTS? We can say that ICT is an ethical technology if patients can receive a clear and a strong advantage immediately. Reducing ehealth investments today is the solution? We can declare the same criterion with another approach: can every hospital reduce its investments for infrastructures and ICT platforms and the digital services costs thanks to the cloud computing? 8/14

5 CLOUD ADVANTAGES:SERVICES AND COSTS Actually, at the present cloud computing gives two main advantages: 1. more and higher services: PACS in cloud; EHR; laboratory information system; telemedicine; e-prescription; etc.; 2. lower costs: servers; platforms; IT hospital structure; etc.. If we work with a worldwide potentiality inside our hospitals we can cut our digital divide. 9/14 CLOUD COMPUTING: A NEW PARADIGM Italy, Europe and other countries have today many financial and economic problems and in healthcare systems too. We can t stop the evolution of the clinical activities and of the hospital organization but our financial resources are going to reduce. Cloud computing is a new paradigm for a sustainable and compatible innovation in healthcare systems. 10/14

6 PRIORITIES FOR CLOUD SERVICES According to the IDC Health Insights study 2012 Cloud in the Western European Healthcare sector the first wave of the cloud adoption was finalized on the Infrastructure-as-a-Service or Platform-as-a-Service. Analyzing the future outlook, investments in healthcare specific solutions will grow faster overall for cloud sector. Source: IDC Health insights Cloud Usage Survey, /14 THE MOVING INTO THE CLOUD CRITERIA In my opinion an hospital can moves into the cloud following some criteria: 1. Redundant BROADBAND NETWORK, for the connection between hospitals, physicians, patients and service providers. 2. ROAD MAP to move hospital systems into the G- cloud under sustainable economic, management and security conditions. 3. INTEROPERABILITY exchange solutions with intra-cloud, inter-cloud, and cloud-ground interface with cloud-based and non-cloud hospital systems. 4. Storage of clinical data in data centers located in a EU COUNTRY guaranteeing compliance with Italian regulations. 5. Permanent operative CONTINUITY of the systems in the cloud, with frequent stresstesting solutions. 12/14

Service provider s LIABILITY for clinical data theft, outages, downtime, interoperability failures. 8. Evolution of hospital ICT Unit towards SERVICE MANAGEMENT skills. 9. Provider s knowledge in CLINICAL PROCESS and hospital organization. 10.
