Source: ONS ONS Key Statistics and Quick Statistics for Local Authorities in the United Kingdom Part 2 Full report can be found here Key Points According to the 2011 UK census, more than a quarter (27 per cent, 13.9 million) of the UK population aged 16 and over had achieved a Level 4 or above qualification such as a degree or other higher qualification or equivalent. This exceeded the proportion that had no qualifications (23 per cent, 11.9 million) in Of the constituent countries of the UK, residents of England were most likely to have a Level 4 or above qualification (27 per cent, 11.8 million) while residents of Northern Ireland were most likely to have no qualifications (29 per cent, 417,000). In 2011, more than two thirds (70 per cent, 32.3 million) of the usually resident population of the UK aged 16 to 74 were economically active at the time of the census, and 30 per cent (14.1 million) were economically inactive. Of those who were economically active, 89 per cent (28.6 million) were employed, 6 per cent (2.1 million) were unemployed and 5 per cent (1.6 million) were full-time students. Page 2 of 14 December 2013

3 In 2011, economically active females were four times as likely to be working part-time (33 per cent, 5.0 million) as economically active males (8 per cent, 1.4 million). In contrast more economically active males worked full-time (62 per cent, 10.7 million) compared with females (47 per cent, 7.1 million). Wholesale and retail trade was the largest industry sector in 2011, accounting for 16 per cent (4.7 million) of usual residents aged 16 to 74 in employment. The largest industry sector for males was also Wholesale and retail trade at 16 per cent (2.5 million) while for females it was Human health and social work activities at 21 per cent (3.0 million). The three largest occupation groups in the UK in 2011 for usual residents aged 16 to 74 were Professional occupations (17 per cent, 5.2 million); Associate professional and technical occupations (13 per cent, 3.8 million) and Skilled trades occupations (12 per cent, 3.5 million). According to the 2011 UK census, the largest socio-economic group in the UK was Lower managerial, administrative, and professional occupations, which accounted for 21 per cent (9.6 million) of all usual residents aged 16 to 74. Source: ONS ONS Forty years of change: UK s biggest survey marks its 40th birthday Labour Force Infographics The UK s biggest survey of how people work marks its 40th birthday. The Labour Force Survey (LFS) has helped paint a picture of the world of work since To mark the occasion and say thank you to the millions of people who have taken part the Office for National Statistics (ONS) looks back at the history of the LFS, and compares labour force data from the early years of the survey with key indicators in When the survey began, some 100,000 people were interviewed. Today, more than 200,000 people a year take part, making the LFS the UK s largest regular survey. Its findings influence a wide range of users, notably the Bank of England, which benchmarks a possible rise in interest rates against an LFS unemployment rate of 7%. In the early 70s, the first questionnaires were 16 pages long and took place face to face in the homes of the people who were selected to take part. Telephone surveys began in By 1990, basic laptop computers were being used to gather data by a field force of interviewers. In the 70s, the force numbered fewer than 100; in 2013, around 600 field interviewers and 200 telephone interviewers regularly work on the LFS. Back in the 70s, the field force was almost exclusively female. In 2013, male interviewers are in the majority. They re getting older, too. The average interviewer is now 57with the oldest field interviewer being 79 and the youngest 25. Among our interviewers we have speakers of 25 languages including Swahili, Czech, Russian, Punjabi, Urdu, Polish and Welsh. How work has changed: the 1970s and 2013 Overall, the number of people over the age of 16 employed hasn t changed much since the survey first began, but who is working has shifted over the past four decades. Data from the late 1970s shows the percentage of men working has dropped by 11% while in comparison the number of women in employment has grown by 12%. How we work has also changed. In 1977 the number of people who were employees was 91%. This dropped to 86% in 2013 and coincided with a rise in the number of self employed people, up to 14% from 8% in the 70s. Meanwhile, the number of men working over 30 hours a week has dropped by 7% and the amount of people with two jobs has doubled since Page 3 of 14 December 2013

4 But the biggest change is where we work. In 1978 a quarter of the UK workforce was employed in the manufacturing industry; this has dropped to 8% in This reflected in a shift to the services sector which now accounts for 83% of the work force compared with 63% 35 years ago. Caron Walker, Director of Collection and Production, at the Office for National Statistics, said: The Labour Force Survey has played a vital role in helping us to understand how people in the UK work. It is an important source of information for policy makers, and helps us understand a changing society. All of us who ve worked on the survey, past and present, would like to say a big thank you to the millions of people who have taken part over the past 40 years. Source: ONS ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, 2013 Provisional Results Full report can be found here Key points In April 2013 median gross weekly earnings for full-time employees were 517, up 2.2% from 506 in For men, full-time earnings were 556 per week, up 1.8%, compared with 459 for women, up 2.2%. The gender pay gap (i.e. the difference between men's and women's earnings as a percentage of men's earnings) based on median gross hourly earnings (excluding overtime) for full-time employees increased to 10.0% from 9.5% in For the year ending 5 April 2013 median gross annual earnings for full-time employees (who had been in the same job for at least 12 months) were 27,000, an increase of 2.1% from the previous year. In April % of full-time employees earned less than 7.28 per hour (excluding overtime), an increase of 1.5% compared with the previous year. At the other end of the distribution, 10% of full-time employees earned more than per hour, which was also an increase of 1.5% compared with the previous year. Source: ONS National Careers Service Job Confidence Index The second quarterly National Careers Service Job Confidence Index 1 shows that the overall national job confidence score has increased by 1.7 points in the last three months, rising from 51.8 to 53.5 out of 100. Research for the index, which measures overall job confidence and job confidence among the unemployed, shows that 76% of the country became more job confident, or maintained the same confidence levels in their job and ability to find work over the last three months, an increase of 1.7 per cent compared to the last Job Confidence Index. However, the Index also reveals that the improvement in overall job confidence is not country-wide, with enhanced confidence mostly felt in London, followed by the South West and the East Midlands. In contrast, the West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber have seen little change. The Index demonstrates that people are taking matters into their own hands when it comes to improving their job prospects almost a quarter of unemployed people (24%) have applied for work experience compared to only one eighth (12%) in the previous Index. In addition, a third (33%) have attended training to progress in their careers, compared to just over one quarter (28%) in the last Index. Page 4 of 14 December 2013

5 However, the Index also reveals that fewer out of work job seekers have updated their CVs in the past three months, 79% compared to 83% in the last Index. While people may be more confident about finding work, previous research from the National Careers Service shows that updating and tailoring a CV can make all the difference when applying for jobs. Overall, the Index shows that economic recovery continues to boost the nation s job confidence, with three-fifths (61%) of employed people still feeling that it would take them less than six months to find a new job if they were made redundant. Two fifths (41%) of the people questioned now expect that they would need less than three months to find a new job, compared to only 38% in the previous three months. 1 The Job Confidence Index is a weighted measure that aggregates seven research topics covering aspects affecting someone s confidence in finding work - general confidence, qualifications, job experience, competition, opportunities, personal confidence and momentum- in a robust metric which can be tracked over time. However the excess employment was all part time and the number in full time employment remained 413,200 below prerecession levels of June The JSA claimant count for Bristol fell for the ninth consecutive month. In October the claimant count (9,770) for Bristol fell below 10,000 for the first time in just over 4½ years. With the majority (63%) of JSA claimants seeking work in sales and elementary occupations Bristol s labour market continues to show weakness in some of the lower skilled occupations.
