1 GetIThere! In Northeast Ohio 1 st Annual Summit April 19, 2013 DISCOVERING IT TALENT NEEDS: THE RITE WAY INSIGHT INTO LABOR MARKET DYNAMICS Why Bother? We need real time data on what IT jobs are in-demand, what they require of workers, and who is hiring in Northeast Ohio. Burning Glass Technologies provides the analytics do this and more. A deepened understanding will help RITE to determine: where the jobs are and extent of commonality among employers seeking to fill similar talent positions as an interim step before investing in Profiles. where to focus attention to develop or expand internship or co-op positions toward creating future hiring pool Determining new IT roles for Profiling. Inform new students and job seekers on where the jobs are, so they select IT major wisely It will also help us assess alignment of IT education programs with overall market demand to jumpstart discussions with institutional partners. For RITE, this but scratches the surface.if only we had better real time information about the region s labor market for IT Talent. 1
2 Traditional Way to Define Demand for IT Talent According to U.S BLS 1, in 20, Computer Systems Analysts and Computer Support Specialists were 27% of all IT jobs in northeast Ohio. Table 1 Name IT Employment in the 18-County Northeast Ohio Region 18 Occupational Titles as Defined by BLS 20 s % of Total 2017 s % Annual Change Computer Systems Analysts 8, % 8,328 4% 216 Computer Support Specialists 7, % 8,364 5% 286 Software Developers, Applications 5, % 6,303 7% 151 openings are estimated at an average of 1700 a year Rather bleak picture of the demand for IT Talent. Anticipated demand by 2017 is unimpressive. No sense of rapidly changing IT roles Up to now, this was the best overall empirical data available of the region s IT labor market. 1 Bureau of Labor Statistics Network and Computer Systems Administrators 5, % 5,501 6% 152 Graphic Designers 5, % 5,169 1% 194 Computer Programmers 3, % 4,022 2% 1 Data Entry Keyers 3, % 3,680 (4%) 75 Information Security Analysts, Web Developers, and Computer Network Architects 3, % 3,834 8% 110 Computer and Information Systems Managers 3, % 3,634 5% 86 Software Developers, Systems Software 2, % 2,422 16% 87 Word Processors and Typists 1, % 1,809 (3%) 14 Computer, Automated Teller, and Office Machine Repairers 1, % 1,694 (7%) 46 Computer Operators 1, % 1,385 (4%) 17 Multimedia Artists and Animators 1, % 1,477 5% 48 Database Administrators 1, % 1,341 11% 47 Technical Writers % 654 3% 17 Computer Hardware Engineers % 417 5% 15 Desktop Publishers % 351 (10%) 8 Computer and Information Research Scientists % 249 6% 8 Total 58, % 60,631 4% 1,688 The New Way: A Different Impression of the Labor Market Real time Posting for IT in NEO Using the same BLS Occupations, 6,272 Online Ads were posted within NEO from Jan 14 to April 11, Still These titles tell us little about the jobs people are doing. The largest number are in an All Other group which is where new job titles are put by BLS. This is a black box for the largest number of IT job Ads. With Burning Glass, we have new ways of working with ad content.
