2 Nuclear Technology Management Professional Development Programme (NPDP) The University of Manchester s Nuclear Technology Management Professional Development Programme (Nuclear-PDP) is a part-time continuing professional development programme for experienced practitioners and new graduates in the nuclear energy industry and those joining the sector from elsewhere. Participants have the option to study for either an MSc, a postgraduate diploma or a postgraduate certificate qualification. Nuclear-PDP, Europe s first full management-focused course for nuclear technology and engineering, provides a flexible and tailored format for those seeking to enhance their skills whilst fitting this in around their current work life. The programme offers a blended learning approach with a combination of distance learning and face-to-face lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions, delivered by renowned academics and nuclear industry practitioners. The Nuclear-PDP Steering Group is made up of a broad range of nuclear industry representatives.

3 Breadth of learning, depth of expertise The Nuclear-PDP modules on offer cover a breadth of knowledge development opportunities right across the civil nuclear energy industry. In addition, participants benefit from The University of Manchester s extensive range of nuclear facilities and expertise, unrivalled in the UK, to assist with their learning. The programme is enhanced by the University s established links with the nuclear industry and Nuclear Technology Education Consortium, and builds on our expertise in the areas of Project Management and Reliability Engineering. 5 Industry focus Content developed through consultation with nuclear industry and skills bodies Programme set in the current commercial, political, strategic and economic context Steering committee comprises a broad range of industrial representatives from several key nuclear sector companies Complements industry s training of Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) Aligned with Nuclear Energy Skills Alliance challenges, with a focus on the long-term development of well-rounded subject matter experts and the retention of expertise and knowledge within the industry Aligned with the objectives of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear Provides an ideal opportunity to network and liaise with others from across the sector who attend the programme

6 Flexible learning A blended learning approach allowing for distance learning, at home or work, and face-to-face education so participants can fit their course around their professional and other responsibilities Manageable time commitment course designed so that, once registered, participants won t need to take time away from the office to attend for more than two days per quarter Time benefits afforded by e-learning technology and mentoring by and telephone Incorporates reflective practice stimulates deep thinking about the subject matter as well as the participant s current role to relate learning to real life Real nuclear case studies are used as examples to give study a real-world context Peer-assisted learning opportunities available

7 Tailored education Appropriate industrial experience is acceptable for entry onto the programme in lieu of a degree Participants can also undertake a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma within the framework of the Masters programme (1-2 years for a certificate, 2-4 years for a diploma and 3-6 years for an MSc) Course units may be taken as a standalone short course for Continuing Professional Development purposes Modules designed to cover different nuclear industry segments for breadth of learning (e.g. new build of nuclear installations, operation and maintenance of nuclear power plant, decommissioning, and fuel cycle and waste management) A wide range of broad and shallow and deep and narrow modules Course modules designed by experts in their field both leading academics and industrial specialists
