3 5 City of Coventry Coventry University 2 3 The City Coventry is a lively, multi-cultural city with a rich history embracing the old and the new. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Cathedral Quarter where the modern architecture and ancient ruins of the two Cathedrals dominate cobbled streets with bustling cafés, pubs and restaurants. Walk through Coventry s pedestrianised city-centre and you ll see over 1,000 years of English history, ranging from the medieval charm of historic Spon Street to the architectural innovation of Millennium Place. You ll find all the main high street stores and plenty of small specialist shops to cater for your every need. Entertainment and Leisure As a focus for entertainment and leisure, the City s reputation is rapidly on the increase. There is an enormous variety of places to eat, drink, dance and relax, including the 33m Skydome complex. This houses a multi-screen cinema, bars and café bars, two nightclubs, and quality restaurants. There is also a 4,000- seat arena, a popular concert venue that doubles up as an ice rink for our championship winning ice hockey team, Coventry Blaze. Culture If you re looking for a cultural experience, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is definitely worth a visit. You may also like to take in a show or two at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry s premier theatrical venue, highly renowned for staging local and national productions. Sport There s plenty on offer for sport lovers too. The Ricoh Arena, home to Coventry City Football Club is a new development which houses a 32,000 capacity football stadium. This will also be the venue for some of the UK s most high profile sports and entertainment events. The 113m multi-purpose development expands over 72 acres and is one of the most prestigious arenas, conference and exhibition centres in the country. In addition, we couldn t be closer to the City sports centre which is home to an Olympic sized swimming pool. As we are situated in the centre of England, we are also very close to Edgbaston, a venue for international test cricket. Local Area Coventry is close to some of the most historic, cultural and scenic areas of the UK. Tourists and visitors from around the whole world are drawn to our region by Shakespeare s literary heritage. His hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon remains a popular tourist destination. Other places of interest include Royal Leamington Spa, the Castles of Kenilworth and Warwick, and Coombe Park, a 300-acre estate comprising an Abbey, formal gardens, woodland nature trails and wildlife. Transport Links Birmingham International Airport is 15 minutes away from Coventry and Birmingham; England s second city, is just 25 minutes away. Its National Exhibition Centre is one of the country s main music venues and is also home to many trade and commercial events. London, the capital of Britain, is only 60 minutes away by train and Oxford, another popular destination, is about 40 minutes away. The University Coventry University is a major UK Higher Education institution of 15,000 students with more than 150 years of history behind its name. 4 Coventry Law School 4 5 Law at Coventry Law School Law has been taught at Coventry University for nearly fifty years and continues to be highly popular with applicants. Coventry Law School offers a range of stimulating Undergraduate and Postgraduate Law Courses which are regularly reviewed to ensure they meet the requirements of our students and the legal profession. Twice yearly the Law School produces its own journal, The Coventry Law Journal, which contains contributions from staff and students. A variety of student case notes are included in the regular editions and, in 2011, we produced our first special student edition containing some of the best work of our final year students. This journal is available on a leading law website (Westlaw) and is taken by the British Library. Recent awards to the Law School include: a grant from the City Solicitors Educational Trust 2011, to be used over three years to help support an additional academic post for the LLB courses; and the Oxford University Press Alistair MacQueen Memorial Grant for 2011, to be used to enable a group of LLB students make a number of short public information films on legal topics that can be accessed by the community. Undergraduate Courses At undergraduate level we offer a range of LLB degrees which are designed to meet the requirements of the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board, as satisfying the Academic Stage of Training for those students who wish to enter the legal profession. Students may choose to study LLB Law, LLB Commercial Law or LLB International Law. Students undertaking the LLB courses may undertake a placement year or a study abroad year. Optional Placement/Study Abroad Year We recognise the importance of both work experience and an international experience to your future career so all of our undergraduate courses are designed to enable you to take an additional optional year either on placement, in the UK or abroad, or on a study year abroad. From your first day in the Law School we will be offering you advice about gaining work experience and placements. In addition to advice from Law staff we have a dedicated Employability and Placements Unit within the Faculty which is there to provide you with advice and support. You will have the opportunity to gain an international experience both through the content of your course and the opportunity to spend time abroad. You may choose to undertake an optional study year abroad. If you don t speak a foreign language we can arrange a study year at an institution where courses are taught in English. The Law School has particularly strong links with the Universities of Liege in Belgium, Strasbourg in France (French speaking), Castellon and Leon in Spain (Spanish speaking), The Hague in the Netherlands, Orebro in Sweden and Pecs in Hungary (where courses are taught in English), and, the Universities of Kiel and Rostock in Germany (German Speaking). Postgraduate Courses At postgraduate level we offer LLM courses in Law, International Business Law and International Law. The LLM courses provide stimulating and academically challenging subjects. They enable students to acquire specialist knowledge and research skills which can be used in a variety of employment and research posts. Practical Legal Skills Students on our undergraduate courses are encouraged to develop their practical skills. The Newsome Vaughan Mooting Competition, sponsored by Newsome Vaughan Solicitors, runs each year and enables students to develop their advocacy skills in a mock appeal. In addition, the Coventry Legal Advice Service (CLAS) offers students the opportunity to advise clients in a pro bono setting under guidance of members of staff who are qualified solicitors. These practical legal skills are embedded in the undergraduate curriculum. At Newsome Vaughan we have had the pleasure of working with several outstanding placement students from Coventry University. We have found them to be professional and helpful. Their skill set is unusually practical in its application, and can benefit an employer from the outset. It is said actions speak louder than words, one short term placement turned into 6 months and we then offered the individual a permanent position. Newsome Vaughan The strength of the School is its dedicated and professional teaching staff. External Examiner s Report

5 Coventry Legal Advice Service (CLAS) 6 57 Students at Coventry Law School can put their studies into practice through their own Law Clinic: Coventry Legal Advice Service (CLAS). CLAS fulfils the following main aims: It contributes towards meeting the need for legal services in the community. It promotes the University s links within the local community and local organisations, including firms of solicitors. It enables law students to gain practical legal experience by participating in the work of the Law Clinic for which they may also gain academic credit towards their law degree. The Hope Centre CLAS students are supervised by members of staff who have many years experience in practice. The Law Clinic operates from the Hope Centre, a newly endowed charity linked to the Church of England, with firstrate facilities, in Hillfields. The Hope Centre is invaluable for its premises, and enables the CLAS Clinic to be firmly based in the community. CLAS provides an essential service for local people who would not normally have the financial means to access legal services of a comparable nature. It helps people with a variety of legal issues and, where necessary, refers the case to local solicitors or an appropriate agency. CLAS Success The clinic deals with around 250 cases each year and recent successes include a personal injury case where we secured damages of 11,000 for the client and a successful case against a large high street retailer resulting in an award of 800. In one typical case which attracted significant coverage in the press and on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Radio, two CLAS students helped their client to obtain judgment in Coventry County Court against a defendant who had illegally clamped and towed away the client s car before charging an extortionate amount. In another case, CLAS members advised a women s refuge in Coventry, in respect of Council Tax charges and obtained a five figure saving. Firms, Agencies & Groups Liaison with local firms of solicitors and other agencies, like Trading Standards, is a big part of the students learning experience. In another recent case, CLAS students liaised with a highly reputable legal practice to draft Particulars of Claim in County Court proceedings to recover a stolen boat, and in a disability discrimination claim, CLAS students had so effectively set out the client s grounds for appeal that a leading firm of trade union solicitors in Birmingham readily agreed to take the case on when it was subsequently referred to them. The Employability and Placements Unit The Law Department stresses the importance of preparing students for the working environment and recognises that graduates with placement experience will have an edge in the competitive job market. The Employability and Placements Unit (EPU) provides an invaluable service to all undergraduate students aiding their employability skills and assisting them with the transition period from study to the world of work. The service consists of long and short-term work placements, support for students during their search for placements, online support via the EPU website with regular updates of current placement vacancies, events and news, administrative support to students prior to commencing their placement. 6 8 Alumni Profiles 59 Liz Fletcher Law Graduate Sarah Bingham Law Graduate Katherine Marriott-Lodge Law Graduate I settled in to life in Coventry much quicker than I ever expected and my three years were fantastic. The law lecturers and my personal tutor made my experience easier and enjoyable by always being available to help me with any issues that arose over my whole time there. I took part in some of the many pro bono opportunities offered at Coventry Law School. Coventry Legal Advice Service enabled me to get very practical experience in interviewing, letter writing and communicating with clients. Mooting gave me practical advocacy experience, and built my confidence in presenting a case. Studying and taking part in these pro bono opportunities at Coventry meant that once I left I was very well prepared to start my Legal Practice Course (LPC). I have finished my LPC and I have a training contract with a medium sized general practice firm in Shropshire. I am very grateful to the lecturers and staff at Coventry University who helped me to get to where I am now. Sarah Venables LLB Law Graduate Sarah joined Ward & Rider as a Trainee Solicitor and is now a qualified Solicitor. Sarah achieved a 2.1 in LLB Law and went on to study the Legal Practice Course where she achieved a commendation. As part of her training contract, Sarah also successfully completed the Professional Skills Course. During her training contract at Ward & Rider, Sarah undertook seats in Employment, Family and Conveyancing. Sarah decided to specialise in Employment Law and has gained experience in a wide variety of employment issues from unfair dismissal to discrimination. Richard Baker Law Graduate I am a Trainee Solicitor with Lawtons, a Crime Specialist firm in Luton. I also deal with my own client base in Coventry. Law is a demanding academic subject. Whether one studies full-time or part-time, it is never easy, and requires commitment, focus, and plenty of hard work. However my time at Coventry was made that much easier, and indeed enjoyable due to the encouragement, enthusiasm, and excellent subject knowledge of the lecturers. It was always easy to get hold of a lecturer to explain the finer points of the Law when necessary. It is hardly surprising that since I have left, I have come across many of their articles in Legal Journals, and found there are more Legal text books written by Coventry University staff year on year. I gained a very sound base of legal knowledge at Coventry University. Undergraduates who choose to study Law at Coventry University will receive a first class legal education in a first class city, and find themselves well equipped to take the next step in their Legal career. I am currently on the NGDP graduate programme for local Government working in London. This is a two year programme where I will complete 4x 6 month placements in different areas. I am currently working in Children s Services and I am hoping that my next placement will be in the legal team working in the Prosecutions Department. As part of the scheme I will also be completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Local Government Management and at the end of the programme have the opportunity to top this up to a Master s qualification. My degree choice helped me to secure my current job as it provided me with a good awareness of both legal and business knowledge which I have been required to use since I started my first placement. Completing my degree has given me the confidence to challenge current practice, be able to support my comments or suggestions with evidence and be able to present my arguments concisely and with precision. Working in local Government will really enhance my CV and give me exposure to variety of different experiences which will prove extremely worthwhile should I choose to return to practising law in the future. Since graduation Sarah has completed the Bar Vocational Course (now known as the Bar Professional Training Course). During this time Sarah entered into the negotiation competition and sat as a judge in the Graduate Diploma in Law Mooting competitions. She achieved a grade of Very Competent and was awarded the joint highest mark of the year for Employment Law in Practice. Currently she is working as a Costs Negotiator/Law Cost Draftsman at Cost Advocates Solicitors, London. Sarah will be sitting the Association of Law Cost Draftsman qualifications to become a Costs Lawyer in the future. Opie Soboyede LLB Law Graduate Tushar Jadhav LLM International Business Law Graduate I am currently working on Project Finance at SJ Law Firm in Mumbai, which is amongst the top three Project Finance firms in Asia. Anyone contemplating studying at Coventry University would indeed benefit from the resources and expertise of the tutors and the staff on the whole and leave the University with fond memories, the way I have. I would certainly recommend Coventry University to anyone aspiring to study in the UK. After my graduation, I commenced my Legal Practice Course (LPC). Following the completion of my LPC I started working with Dylan Conrad Kreolle Solicitors as a paralegal. I was later offered a training contract and I am currently undertaking contentious and non-contentious work. I love my job and I am happy to say that Coventry University played an important part in my career by offering me a chance to learn from the best tutors. My experience at Coventry University is second to none as it has helped me to adequately manage and resolve the challenges I face whilst on the job.

Research and scholarly activity is an important part of our work, and there is a close constructive relationship between researchers here. One of the advantages of being a relatively small active community is the friendly and supportive environment in which we work. We encourage all research students to talk about their work, with each other and with staff. The LLM by Research is based on a 30,000 word thesis followed by a viva voca examination. Students may wish to pursue a course of research in law, socio-legal studies, or criminology. Tuition is also available on research methods and research skills, and guidance is available in undertaking theoretical and empirical research. Supervision and guidance are available throughout the programme. For further information please contact Angela Marshall [email protected] Tel: +44 (0) MPhil/PhD Awards Both the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy awards are determined on the basis of a thesis followed by a viva voce examination, and the essential distinction between the two is the size and scale of the research project. All students are supervised by a small team of staff who, between them, have the necessary subject expertise and are able to offer appropriate supervision and guidance. We are experienced in supervising both theoretical and empirical research, and have established some valuable links with external organisations which are able to assist the research. All students receive appropriate guidance and tuition in relevant research design, skills and methods. Research Application Professor Barry Mitchell has overall responsibility for research at Coventry Law School. In the first instance we invite prospective students to submit to us at a brief outline (300 words) of the kind of research they would like to pursue to [email protected] which will enable us to: (a) indicate our ability to offer the appropriate supervision; (b) offer guidance on how to develop your ideas and proposals; (c) advise on the appropriate procedures for enrolment and registration.
