POLITICS, PHILOSOPHY & LAW LLB 2014 UNDERGRADUATE STUDY LLB Politics, English Law Philosophy & French & Law Law SCHOOL THE DICKSON OF POON LAW SCHOOL OF LAW
Law at King s Our new Politics, Philosophy & Law (PPL) LLB programme offers a unique opportunity for students to fulfil the requirements of a qualifying law degree, while at the same time being able to choose from a range of modules from the Philosophy and Political Economy departments at King s. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme, as well as its unrivalled location in the heart of legal and political London, provides access to eminent academics from three outstanding faculties and gives you the chance to consider a wide range of exciting career options through King s connections and links with London s global community. The PPL Programme aims at producing the most complete lawyers and legal academics who are able to confidently navigate the difficult waters of legal and political discourse. What holds the programme together is a philosophic look at the actual law in its political and economic context. Our goal is for students to know both the distinctiveness of the legal approach and to engage their critical judgement as to the value of that approach. You will also develop an ability to engage in philosophical debate and to apply concepts, theories and methods to the analysis of political ideas and practices. The skills set acquired through this programme, means you will graduate with a wellrounded degree highly soughtafter by a variety of employers. THE DICKSON POON UNDEGRADUATE LAW SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME The programme is the largest scholarship programme for Law in the UK and Europe. With up to 75 scholarships available, it is aimed at supporting the brightest and the best students and worth from 18,000 to 36,000. The prestigious and generous Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and open to all who apply to study Law at King s and who are offered a place on one of our LLB programmes in See our website for further details.
CAREERS King s Careers & Employability exists to help you plan your future and make the most of your time at King s. We provide tailored employer events, skills development programmes and one-to-one support to ensure you understand your options, know what employers are looking for, and can effectively demonstrate that you have the skills they need. Whatever your career goals, our labour market knowledge and expertise around work experience, internships and graduate recruitment can help you find and apply for opportunities from the first year onwards. Legal Careers Week Legal Careers Week is our biggest law careers event of the year. Hundreds of law and non-law students turn out for daily workshops, lectures, and networking events with employers, alumni, law schools, and SRA and Bar representatives. The flagship event of the week is an Alumni Panel Discussion & Networking Event, organised in conjunction with our Alumni Office to give students and employers an opportunity to meet in an informal setting. King s Law Fair The Law Fair brings seventy or so employers to campus over three days, allowing students to talk with associates, solicitor and barrister trainees, graduate recruitment offices and other professionals to learn more about the opportunities they offer. The Law Careers Development Programme The Law Careers Development Programme is a series of timetabled workshops held in the autumn and spring terms and aimed at helping you develop your career skills as you approach the job market. The workshops are tailored to address your specific employability concerns in a timely and relevant manner. Sessions are often presented by our law-dedicated Careers Consultants, though employers are also brought in to share their perspectives on what makes a good candidate. In this way, the LCDP is not only a skills programme, but also a great way to engage directly with legal employers. One-to One Services Includes a number of opportunities for personalised assistance, such as: Quick Queries, Career Discussions and Practice Interviews.
Student life Both the King s College London Law Society ( and Bar Society ( organise a number of social and career-oriented functions; internal and external mooting competitions; skills workshops; mock interviews; lecture series with prestigious barristers and other legal practitioners; the Annual Black Tie Dinner; the Inaugural Freshers Party. The Pro Bono Society ( support and promote legallyrelated volunteer work and education to the community, and run a number of exciting projects for students; StreetLaw; Amicus; Law Mentoring; The Legal Clinic (assisted by esteemed City law firm Speechly Bircham). King s Think Tank Society ( com) is the first and only student-led policy institute in London. Over the past year the Society organised a series of high profile speakers, the publication of a journal and internship and work placement opportunities at leading think tanks across London. The Law Council/Forum meets throughout the academic year with student representatives, senior academic and administrative members of staff attending, including the Dean. The Forum plays an important part in maintaining good relations between staff and students at the School. This is the kind of course I wished I could have taken as an undergraduate. Interdisciplinary without being aimless. Top scholars and lecturers in each Department. Provides great opportunity for employment while leaving plenty of space for studying the hard, foundational questions that underlie the study of law and politics. Dr Andrea Sangiovanni Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, Department of Philosophy
ABOUT THE SCHOOLS Law has been taught at King s since 1831, and The Dickson Poon School of Law is recognised globally as one of the UK s premier law schools.
