Hinch as the 18th manager in franchise history... Hinch brings more than 20 years of playing, managing and front office experience in Major League Baseball to the Astros organization...this is his second managerial post, as he served as Arizona s manager for parts of two seasons from Hinch also played parts of seven Major League seasons with Oakland, Kansas City, Detroit and Philadelphia...a former catcher, Hinch played in 338 career Major League games after being selected in the third round of the 1996 draft... Hinch joins the Astros from San Diego, where he most recently served as the club s Vice President and Assistant General Manager for three years ( ). MIDSEASON CHANGE: On Sept. 1, the Astros named Tom Lawless interim manager after Bo Porter was relieved of his duties...additionally, Adam Everett was added to the ML coaching staff, replacing Dave Trembley as bench coach...under Lawless, the Astros posted an record in September...Lawless had been serving as the organization s infield coach at Double A Corpus Christi. ASTROS NAME COACHING STAFF: The Astros named their coaching staff for the 2015 season on Oct pitching coach Brent Strom and bullpen coach Craig Bjornson will return in their same roles as last season...they will be joined by: Bench Coach: Trey Hillman Hitting Coach: Dave Hudgens Third Base Coach: Gary Pettis First Base Coach: Rich Dauer DOWN THE STRETCH: The Astros went in their last 26 games and in their last Houston played close to.500 baseball over the last two-plus months (since July 28), posting a record in their last 57 games. FOUR MONTHS: Over a four-month span, from May 11-Sept. 15, the Astros played one game under.500 baseball, posting a record in 113 games. WINNING MONTHS: The Astros posted winning records in May (15-14) and August (15-14) this season...these were the first winning months posted by the Astros since the 2010 season (July, August, September). RIGHT DIRECTION: The Astros finished the season and in fourth place in the AL West... this marked the club s best record since posting a record in ICE CREAM SUNDAES: The Astros completed their season with a record on Sundays, having won four of their last five Sunday games. BBWAA AWARDS: The Houston Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) announced their annual awards for the 2014 season: Astros MVP: 2B Jose Altuve Astros Pitcher of the Year: LHP Dallas Keuchel Astros Rookie of the Year: RHP Collin McHugh Darryl Kile Good Guy Award: RHP Scott Feldman Houston Area (non Astro) Player of the Year: IF Anthony Rendon, Washington Nationals Fred Hartman Long and Meritorious Service Award: Jamie Hildreth, Astros senior vice president SPEED AND POWER: Among American League teams, the Astros ranked second in stolen bases (122) and third in home runs (163)...they are the only team this season to reach both of those stolen base and home run totals...prior to this season, the Astros had reached both of those totals only twice, the seasons...their 163 home runs were the most since 2008 (167) and the 11th-highest total in franchise history. HOMER-HAPPY: With 103 home runs, the 2014 Astros became just the fourth club in franchise history to reach triple-digit home runs prior to the All-Star Break. Most Astros HR - Pre All-Star Break LEAGUE LEADERS: 2B Jose Altuve led the American League in batting average (.341), hits (225) and steals (56), while LHP Dallas Keuchel led the AL in complete games (5). 2 SILVER BOOT: The Astros won the season series against the Rangers, 11-8, securing the coveted Silver Boot Trophy...this included a 7-3 record in their three series at Minute Maid Park...this marks the first time that Houston has won the season series with the Rangers since 2006 (4-2). HOME SWEET HOME: The Astros finished their season with a record at home, a 14-win improvement over last year s home record (24-57)...the Astros started 3-9 at home (thru April 25) and finished with a record over their last 69 home games...their 38 wins at Minute Maid Park this season are the club s most since 2010 (42-39). TRADE RECAP: On July 31, the Astros completed a six-player trade with the Marlins prior to the trade deadline...in the deal, the Astros acquired OF Jake Marisnick, IF Colin Moran, RHP Francis Martes and a 2015 Competitive Balance Round A pick...in return, the Astros traded RHP Jarred Cosart, IF Kiké Hernandez and OF Austin Wates. SPOILER ALERT: From Aug. 19 through Sept. 21, the Astros played 27 of 31 games against playoff-contending teams...in those 27 games, Houston went the 27 games included matchups with the Yankees (2-1), A s (3-3), Angels (3-2), Indians (2-5) and Mariners (4-2). SERIES WINS: The Astros won four straight series, beating the Rangers (3-1), Angels (2-0), Athletics (2-1) and Mariners (2-1) from Aug. 28-Sept this marks the first time that Houston has won outright four straight series since the Astros won five straight from May 29-June 14, SERIOUS BUSINESS: The Astros went seven straight series without a series loss from May 22-June 12...the last time they went seven straight series without losing one was April 3-26 of 2006 (6 series wins, 1 tie). ROAD WARRIORS: The Astros posted 6-4 and 3-2 records on consecutive road trips from May 19-June 10, giving them back-to-back winning trips for the first time since 2010: Aug (6-4), Sept. 3-8 (4-2)...over that span, Houston went four straight road series without losing a series (two wins, two splits) for the first time since opening up the 2004 season without losing a road series in each of their first six series (five wins, one split) schedule: The Astros will open their 2015 schedule with a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians, with Opening Day set for Monday, April 6, at Minute Maid Park...while Houston will host all American League clubs in the regular season, the Astros also have home series with the Dodgers and Giants from the National League West...Houston will conclude their 2015 season with a three-game series at Arizona, which will be the second consecutive season in which the Astros finish the year with an Interleague series...houston played the Mets in New York for the final series this season. CALL TO THE HALL: The ballots for the 2015 Hall of Fame induction class, which will be sent out to eligible voters in late November, is sure to include both Astros greats 1B Jeff Bagwell and 2B Craig Biggio...this year will mark Bagwell s fifth time on the ballot and Biggio s third time...last year, Biggio fell just two votes shy of receiving the required 75 percent of the votes for induction into the Hall of Fame...Bagwell received 54.3 percent of the votes. ALTUVE TO JAPAN: 2B Jose Altuve has been named to the Major League Baseball All-Star Team which will travel to Japan this offseason...the 2014 Japan All-Star Series will feature MLB All-Stars traveling to Japan this November to play a five-game series against Samurai Japan (Japan s National Team)...the first exhibition game will be held on Nov joining Altuve in Japan will be Astros mascot Orbit, who was the only MLB mascot invited on the trip. BATTING TITLE SECURED: 2B Jose Altuve became the first player in franchise history to win the batting title with a.341 (225x660) average...he finished immediately ahead of Detroit s DH Victor Martinez and his.335 (188x561) average...entering the final game of the season, Altuve held a.003 point advantage and secured his title with a 2x4 day. ASTROS BATTING TITLE: Prior to 2B Jose Altuve s historic season, the Astros (in existence since 1962) were one of four teams in the Majors to never win a batting title, joining Milwaukee (1969), Arizona (1998) and Tampa Bay (1998)...now the Oakland (1952), Cleveland (1954) and Philadelphia (1958) franchises have gone the longest without a batting champ. ALTUVE IN THE ALL-STAR GAME: After entering the 2014 MLB All-Star game at second base in the top of the 5th, 2B Jose Altuve got his one plate appearance in the bottom of the 5th and hit a sacrifice fly, which extended the American League lead to Altuve is just the fifth Astros player to record an RBI in an All-Star Game, joining Lance Berkman (2002, 2006, 2008), Craig Biggio ( ), Cesar Cedeno (1973, 1976) and Lee May (1972). HEY NOW, YOU RE AN ALL-STAR: 2B Jose Altuve was named an All-Star for the second time in his career via the player vote... Altuve, who was also a member of the NL All-Star team in 2012, is one of three Astros second basemen to make an All-Star team (also, Joe Morgan, Craig Biggio). ALTUVE S HISTORIC SEASON: Below is a list of the milestones that Jose Altuve reached in 2014: with 225 hits, 47 doubles and 56 steals, is one of two Major League players to reach those totals in one season in MLB history, also Ty Cobb in 1911 (248 hits, 47 doubles, 83 steals). his 225 hits were the most by a second baseman since Charlie Gehringer posted 227 hits in 1936 for the Detroit Tigers. with 225 hits, set the single-season franchise hit record, which had been set by Craig Biggio (210 hits in 1998)...is just the second player in franchise history to reach 200 hits. set the single-season record for hits by a Venezuelan-born player...the previous record was set by Magglio Ordonez (216) in his 56 steals tied as the third-most by a Venezuelan. posted franchise records with 69 multi-hit games, 24 three-hit games and 168 singles (all tops in MLB). finished the season leading the AL in batting average (.341), hits (225) and stolen bases (56)...became the first player to lead his league in those categories since Ichiro Suzuki in 2001 (.350, 242 H, 56 SB)...prior to Suzuki, the last player to do so was Snuffy Stirnweiss with the 1945 Yankees (per Elias). posted the most hits in single season by a right-handed hitter since Paul Molitor also had 225 in became the first Major League player in 97 years with four straight multi-steal games (from June 26-29) and just the third player in baseball s modern era (since 1900) to accomplish this...the first two were Bill Dahlen (1904) and Ray Chapman (1917). ALTUVE S AWARDS: In addition to his Team MVP Award, Altuve was the Astros nominee for Major League Baseball s Hank Aaron Award...also named the Astros recipient of the Heart and Hustle Award, presented by the MLB Players Alumni Association...additionally, he was named one of three finalists as the AL s Most Outstanding Player in the Players Choice Awards. HALL OF FAME EXHIBIT: At the request of the Hall of Fame, 2B Jose Altuve donated several items to the Hall in 2014, including the bat he used when recording his final hit of the season, the franchise record 225th hit...also donated his cleats that were used when stealing two bases in four straight games, as he became the first player to do so since the cleats were displayed as part of the Today s Game exhibit located on the Museum s second floor. TWO-PLUS: 2B Jose Altuve recorded multiple hits in seven straight games from Sept , the Astros longest multi-hit game streak since Lance Berkman also went seven straight from May 3-10, only two Astros in franchise history have had multi-hit game streaks longer than seven games: Billy Hatcher (9g, April 12-21, 1987) and Jesus Alou (9g, Sept. 1-11, 1969). THIEVERY: 2B Jose Altuve, who led the AL with 56 stolen bases, had a run of 28 successful stolen base attempts from May 17-July 19...this tied a franchise record set by Carlos Beltran in the last Major Leaguer with a 28-steal run without being caught was 2B Daniel Murphy ( ). CC S BUFFET: From July 1 thru the end of the season, Chris Carter led the Majors in home runs (24), ranked second in slugging (.564), tied for second in RBI (58) and seventh in OPS (.906). NEAR PLAYER OF THE MONTH: DH Chris Carter did not win AL Player of the Month for August, but did make a serious run at it after leading the Majors in home runs (12) and slugging (.626) while finishing second in RBI (29) in the month...his home run total was the second-highest by a player in a month this season (Edwin Encarnacion-16 HR in May)...Detroit s DH Victor Martinez earned the AL Player of the Month honors. 3 I LL TAKE TWO: Chris Carter recorded seven multi-homer games this season and now has 10 in his career (all as an Astro)...his seven multi-homer games in a single season are a franchise record, surpassing Lance Berkman s previous record of six, set in ROOKIES OF THE MONTH: For the first time in franchise history, the Astros had two different players win the American League Rookie of the Month in the same season: OF George Springer (May) and RHP Collin McHugh (September)...prior to this season, only three Astros players had won the National League Player of the Month: OF Hunter Pence (May 2007), RHP Kirk Saarloos (July 2002) and RHP Roy Oswalt (August 2001). MAY ROOKIE OF THE MONTH: RF George Springer was named the AL Rookie of the Month for May...for the month, Springer led all AL rookies in home runs (10), RBI (25), runs (22), and slugging (.647) while hitting his 10 home runs in May rank tied for third all-time in Major League history for home runs in May by a rookie... the last Major League rookie to club 10 or more home runs during the month was Mark McGwire in 1987 (15 HR are a MLB record). MCHUGH FLAWLESS IN SEPTEMBER: En route to being named the AL Rookie of the Month in September, RHP Collin McHugh won all four of his starts in the month, finishing with a 4-0 record and a 1.59 ERA (5ER/28.1IP)...he recorded 25 strikeouts and just one walk in September and led all Major League rookies in ERA, opponents average (.150, 15x100), WHIP (0.56) and strikeout to walk ratio (25.00), while ranking tied for first in wins. STALKING PUMA: Despite playing in just 78 games this season, OF George Springer hit 20 home runs, just one home run shy of tying the franchise rookie record for home runs in a single season... although he fell short of the single-season record, Springer did set franchise rookie records for home runs (19) and RBI (50) prior to the All-Star Break Astros Rookie Leaders in HR Player (Year) HR 1. Martinez (2011) was the first. #VOTE KEUCHEL: LHP Dallas Keuchel was one of five players named to the Final Vote ballot for the AL All-Star team, but ultimately did not end up making the squad...prior to 2014, the Astros had two players make the Final Vote ballot: OF Carlos Lee (2008) and RHP Roy Oswalt (2005, 2007)...Oswalt won the fan vote in YOU RE GROUNDED: Astros starter LHP Dallas Keuchel finished the season with a 3.63 ground ball to fly ball ratio, which led the Majors by a wide margin...rhp Tyson Ross (SD) ranked second in the Majors with a 2.81 ratio...since that stat started being tabulated in 1987, only three pitchers have posted a higher ground ball to fly ball ratio in a single season other than Keuchel: RHP Brandon Webb ( ), RHP Derek Lowe (2003, 2006) and RHP Kevin Brown (1997). WORKHORSE: LHP Dallas Keuchel led the AL in complete games with five, which were the most by an Astros southpaw since Mike Hampton tallied seven complete games in Keuchel is the first Astro in franchise history to lead their league in complete games...his IP ranked fifth in the AL. KEUCHEL WINS AL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LHP Dallas Keuchel won the American League Player of the Week Award for the week of May Keuchel made two starts in the week, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.02 ERA (2ER/17.2IP)...he became the first Astros pitcher to win a Player of the Week Award since RHP Roy Oswalt from Sept. 1-7, KEUCHEL S GEMS: Over three straight starts from May 13-25, LHP Dallas Keuchel tossed two complete games and went 8.2 innings in his other start...the last Astros pitcher to go at least 8.2 innings in three straight starts was RHP Darryl Kile (June 22-July 3, 1993)...Kile also had two complete games and an 8.2-inning start in his run...the last Major Leaguer to do so was LHP Cliff Lee from June 16-28, 2011 (three consecutive shutouts). NINERS: LHP Dallas Keuchel (9-5) and RHP Jarred Cosart (9-6) both finished with nine wins prior to the All-Star break...the last time Houston had two nine-game winners before the All-Star break was in 1999, when RHP Jose Lima (13-4), LHP Mike Hampton (11-3) and RHP Shane Reynolds (11-6) turned the trick. ROOKIE RANKINGS: Among Major League rookies, RHP Collin McHugh ranked first in ERA (2.73)(min. 150IP), third in strikeouts (157), fifth in innings pitched (154.2) and tied for fourth in wins (11)...in Astros rookie history, McHugh ranked second in ERA, third in strikeouts and tied for fourth in wins. QUALLS CALL: Closer RHP Chad Qualls led all Major League relievers with a 0.88 walks per 9.0 innings ratio (5BB/51.1.IP)... he struck out 43 batters this season, good for the third-highest strikeout to walk ratio (8.60) among MLB relievers...in franchise history, ranks as the second-lowest single-season walks per 9.0 innings ratio by an Astros reliever (RHP Wilton Lopez, 0.67 in 2010). ALTUVE FIRST TO 100 HITS: 2B Jose Altuve had three hits and became the first Major Leaguer to reach 100 hits this season in the Astros 3-1 win on June 20 at TB he reached 100 hits with his second hit of the night, in his 298th at-bat, becoming the first Astros player to reach 100 hits before his 300th at-bat of a season since 2008, when Lance Berkman got to the century mark in his 277th at-bat. CHRIS DUNCAN: The Texas sports community lost journalist Christopher Duncan on Sept. 8, 2014, at the age of 43 the skilled writer achieved his dream by becoming a sports journalist after studying at Indiana University s distinguished School of Journalism, where he also worked as a beat writer for the Indiana Daily Student after graduating in 1993, Duncan was employed by the Times of Northwest Indiana before moving to the Associated Press, where he would remain for 20 years Duncan covered the Houston Astros, Rockets and Texans; the 2004 Olympic Games and numerous runnings of the Kentucky Derby; Division I sports programs including Texas A&M, Duke, North Carolina, Louisville and Kentucky; several PGA tournaments and countless other sporting events he mentored many young journalists instilling confidence on how to handle any situation, and his rapport and close relationships with athletes, coaches and team management helped him share fascinating stories with sports fans around the world.
