BROWARD COUNTY COMMUNITY REPORT

HCA East Florida HCA HCA s roots date back to 1968 when Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr. led a group of physicians to build a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Over four decades of hard work and dedication have made HCA Hospital Corporation of America the nation s leading provider of quality healthcare services, with locally managed facilities that include approximately 164 hospitals and 106 outpatient surgery centers in 20 states and throughout Great Britain. In Florida, there are 43 hospitals and 33 surgery centers, three division offices and several other service facilities affiliated with HCA. HCA East Florida Division Located in Ft. Lauderdale, the HCA East Florida Division encompasses 14 hospitals in South Florida and the Treasure Coast, in addition to multiple ambulatory surgery centers and imaging centers, a supply chain center and an integrated regional laboratory. We believe that EHR will be a fundamental support system for improving the quality of healthcare in our facilities. hcare Hub/Mobility Physician Portal This portal integrates the electronic medical records of our physician practices with our hospitals to provide physicians with access to their patients clinical records. It puts critical information at their fingertips, both on their office computers and via smartphone technology. hcare Access This service provides physicians and their staff with a faster and more convenient remote login solution. Whether using PC, MAC, or ipad, physicians have access to the same clinical applications they use at the hospital from virtually anywhere. Connection time is 75% faster than prior remote access solutions and single sign-on password management is available. Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) CPOE is patient safety technology that allows providers to place orders directly into the clinical information system and check each order against the patient s medical information. Providers are alerted to any potential contraindications or interactions at the time of order. This streamlines the process and eliminates opportunities for medical error. In addition to the safety checks, orders go immediately to the department(s) that will implement/initiate the order, leading to more efficient patient care. This system is used in all of our emergency departments and hospital-wide. Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) & MUSE PACS stores digital versions of patients clinical images, such as CT and PET scans, MRIs and X-rays to make them readily accessible at the hospital or remote locations. The MUSE system digitizes EKG tracings, allowing for easy access to this information. Electronic Bar-Coded Medication Administration All HCA East Florida hospitals have implemented emar software to prevent medication errors and improve patient safety. Each patient receives an armband with a unique bar code. Before a medication is administered, the bar codes on both the armband and medication are scanned to verify that the patient is receiving the right drug and dosage at the right time. The software checks each medication against the patient s drug history and lab results. If conflicts or potential interactions are identified, warnings alert the nurse to verify or call the doctor before administering the medication. HCA s results with emar have been instrumental in encouraging the FDA to develop a standardized bar code system for the pharmaceutical industry and at all hospitals to improve patient safety. Bar code-enabled transfusion administration allows clinicians to scan the patient ID band and the bar code on the blood product to ensure that the correct product is being issued and administered to the patient. This capability is similar to the functionality introduced by the emar & Bar Coding project, now called Bar Code-Enabled Medication Administration. Voice Recognition System This technology allows physicians to report their clinical findings directly on a system that recognizes their voice. It creates efficiency in our radiology departments by eliminating the delays often caused by transcriptions. The report then gets reviewed on screen by the radiologist where it can be corrected, signed and sent for utilization by other clinicians within a 30-minute time frame. Emergency Department Management Module (EDM) EDM is used to manage the flow of patients through the emergency department from arrival through departure. Both CPOE and emar fully integrate into EDM, allowing for streamlined communication of orders and medication administration between physicians and emergency department staff. EDM is also used to measure and track emergency room wait times quickly and accurately. Telehealth At JFK, HCA East Florida has the ability to monitor patients from a distance using electronic devices to record and send measurements of patient vital signs. Telehealth technologies are evolving to provide real-time interactive health systems that can engage patients and their care teams more fully in their treatment. Upon discharge, patients are monitored and managed from home. Emergency Department For the past few years, HCA East Florida has been working diligently to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of its emergency rooms. Our focus on enhancing care and improving emergency processes has dramatically reduced wait times to below national averages. We have been so successful that average emergency room wait times are now available to the public. This vital information provides patients with the resources to make informed decisions about their urgent medical needs. Wait times for all of our hospitals are updated every 30 minutes and are available via text of ER to 23000, iphone app on our website, iphone itriage app from the AppStore and roadside digital billboards throughout the region. We also offer emergency room wait times for our hospitals with pediatrics. Patients can text ERKids to for access to immediate average wait times for children s emergency care. 2 3

Social Media Social media allows the community to communicate with us directly. All of our hospitals can be accessed through Facebook and Twitter, and there is a video library on YouTube. Our social media channels make it simple to stay up to date on our latest technologies, services and community involvement. Our hospitals websites encourage interaction and provide important information. Technology Our East Florida Division hospitals are upgrading technology at an unprecedented rate to ensure we provide clinical excellence and optimal patient outcomes. In addition to using the most advanced medical systems, our facilities have integrated wireless and digital technology through all modalities. We also offer nine robotic programs that enable surgeons to perform precision work with very small incisions and faster recovery times. Remote Patient Monitoring Airstrip Cardiology and Airstrip OB are two applications that are improving the speed and quality of communication within our hospitals. AirStrip Cardiology the revolutionary new technology that delivers EKGs from Emergency Medical Services directly to doctors and nurses smart phones or tablets. It allows patients to be accessed while they re being transported to the hospital. The crucial time saved can help save lives. Airstrip OB delivers vital patient waveform data, including fetal heartbeat and maternal contraction patterns, in virtual real-time directly from the hospital labor and delivery unit to a doctor s smart phone. This application gives physicians the ability to closely monitor patients 24/7 when the demands of their day necessitate their periodic absence from the labor and delivery unit. itriage itriage provides access to medical information on thousands of symptoms, diseases and medical procedures. It also allows patients to find emergency room wait times, get healthcare cost information and view quality reports. itriage was developed to put better medical information into their patients hands. These medical pioneers have now empowered healthcare consumers with this revolutionary acute care decision tool. itriage is available as a free app for iphone, Android ȚM Blackberry & Palm smartphones or at Giving Back to the Community Community Support Our employees provide financial and volunteer support to countless civic organizations, schools, colleges, city projects and charitable organizations in their communities. Uninsured/Underinsured Patient Education HCA East Florida hospitals are committed to helping uninsured/underinsured patients who qualify for local and state health benefits. Each hospital offers on-site benefit education and Medicaid enrollment assistance. Volunteering In 2011, HCA East Florida hospital employees and volunteers dedicated 377,444 hours of patient and family support. Events included building homes with Habitat for Humanity, Making Strides for the American Cancer Society, and promoting wellness and education through complimentary health screenings and lectures. We sponsor the Team Storm Riders cycling team, which ranked 49th in the country for raising funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, with riding members from our staff. Step Up for Students Since 2005, HCA has redirected corporate income tax to the Step Up for Students program. Through this gift, low-income students receive a K-12 scholarship enabling them to receive a quality education. Qualifying parents can use these grants to send their child to the public or private school that best meets their child s needs. We also offer emergency room wait times for our hospitals with pediatrics. Patients can text ERKids to for access to immediate average wait times for children s emergency care. Bariatric Surgery At Northwest, we are constantly striving to set a new benchmark in the bariatric field. We are one of the few hospitals in South Florida recognized by insurance companies as a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery. Northwest is also accredited by the Surgical Review Committee (SRC). This prestigious designation is granted to institutions that have demonstrated required resources to perform safe bariatric surgery with excellent short-term and long-term outcomes. Our specially trained surgical team, bariatric unit nursing staff and other clinical personnel provide patients with the multifaceted standards, complex patient management and intricate guidelines that rule the bariatric field today. Oncology Services We promote the importance of cancer education, screening and early detection because the earlier the diagnosis is made, the better the chance of a cure. Our highly skilled team offers a full range of diagnostic, treatment and support services, as well as the highest standard of care. We utilize the most advanced techniques to identify the nature and extent of the specific disease, such as digital mammography, bronchoscopy, computerized tomography (CT), endoscopy, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). Patients have less trauma and pain, minimal scarring, less blood loss, faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. The da Vinci Si Surgical System is available for the treatment of uterine fibroids, prostate disease, obesity and other gynecological diagnoses that may require surgery, including hysterectomies, oophorectomies, myomectomies, ovarian cystectomies, prostatectomies and sleeve gastrectomies. Heart & Vascular Institute The Heart and Vascular Institute at Northwest is the only Cardiac Level II licensed program in northwest Broward County. The brand new state-of-the-art two story Cardiovascular Tower opened its doors to the community in April. The expansion and construction of the Cardiovascular Tower at the Heart and Vascular Institute includes two open heart operating room suites, a cardiovascular intensive care unit and a cardiovascular progressive care unit. The new facility enhances our existing services, such as our cardiac catheterization lab, electrophysiology lab and state-of-the-art coronary imaging services featuring computed tomography angiogram (CTA). Our highly skilled staff includes experienced cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, electrophysiologists and cardiac anesthesiologists. Cardiac Services Our cardiac services bring together the collaborative efforts and experience of highly skilled physician specialists, nurses, technologists and other cardiovascular health professionals. Comprised of a team of experienced cardiologists, anesthesiologists, interventional radiologists, pulmonologists and internists, these specialists combine their expertise and knowledge to provide patients with the latest scientific advances in their respective fields. Our team performs primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) services, which enables our facility to have emergency coronary angioplasty available to patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 6 7

Northwest meets the national average of door-to-balloon time, which is the speed that a hospital can perform angioplasty or other coronary intervention on a patient having a myocardial infarction or heart attack. Door-toballoon time is a very specific measure of quality that involves every step, from diagnosis to surgery. Our cardiac catheterization lab is equipped with the latest medical technology and available 24 hours a day for emergency services. These catheterbased procedures offer the benefits of shorter hospital stays, less-visible surgical scarring and reduced recovery time without the pain of a large incision. These procedures can be performed on both the heart and peripheral blood vessels. The echocardiography department is integrated within the cardiovascular department and specializes in echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and pediatrics. Maternity/Newborn Services At Northwest, we are dedicated to providing the most caring and comfortable childbirth experience. From the earliest stages of pregnancy, our team is available to answer questions, address concerns and share the family s excitement. Our recently renovated and upgraded rooms were designed with new moms and families in mind. We provide a state-of-the art NICU transport team ensuring safe transfer to Plantation General Hospital for higher level of care. Minimally Invasive Surgery Minimally invasive surgery, or laparoscopic surgery, is becoming the predominant technique in many areas of surgery. For most patients, this approach offers substantially less scarring, decreased pain, shorter recovery times and reduced risk of secondary complications. These procedures are performed through small incisions that allow for the insertion of surgical instruments and a camera, which enables the surgeon to view the procedure on video monitors in the operating room. This approach is considered less invasive because it replaces the need for the large incisions required in traditional surgeries. Robotic Surgery At Plantation General Hospital, the use of robotics is taking minimally invasive surgery to the next level. Surgeries are performed through incisions that are considerably smaller than those required for conventional open surgeries. Our surgeons use the da Vinci S Surgical System, the most technologically advanced surgical robotic system in the world, to perform surgical procedures through high-definition cameras with extraordinary precision, control and range of motion. Patients benefit from less trauma and pain, minimal scarring, less blood loss, faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. Imaging Services Our diagnostic imaging department offers a variety of radiology and imaging services that are available 24 hours a day. Our philosophy is based on the belief that the power to recover from chemical dependency resides within a group, rather than within the individual. Outpatient Center Plantation General provides endoscopic ultrasound examinations. Endoscopic ultrasounds, or EUS, combines ultrasound technology with endoscopy. For the patient, both the preparation and the procedure itself are about the same as conventional upper or lower GI endoscopy. EUS is helping physicians diagnose diseases of the pancreas, bile duct, liver, spleen and gallbladder as well as assessing a variety of concerns at an early stage. Following the procedure, our team works with patients to help them keep the weight off and adjust to their new lifestyle. Everyone at University Hospital and took such good care of me while I was there. The people were so cordial and everyone had such a pleasant demeanor. In fact, I ran into the nurse that took care of me during my stay and running into her was like running into an old friend. I would recommend this hospital to anyone. UHMC earned the Gold Seal of Approval TM for Stroke Accreditation by The Joint Commission. To earn this distinction, a disease management program undergoes an extensive, unannounced, on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission reviewers every two years. These programs are evaluated against Joint Commission standards through an assessment of a program s processes, the program s ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, and interviews with patients and staff. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida awarded the Blue Distinction certification in Hip and Knee Replacement to UHMC for delivering highquality orthopedic health care. This designation is based on rigorous criteria established with input from expert physicians and medical organizations. Its goal is to help consumers consistently find quality specialty care. The Joint Commission also awarded its certification to University Hospital through their Hip and Knee Surgery Disease-Specific Care Certification Program. These certifications acknowledge University Hospital s continuous compliance with top-notch orthopedic care. 12% Total Salaries & Benefits 64% 16 17

Westside Regional has been providing the highest-quality healthcare in South Florida since We are fully accredited by The Joint Commission and recognized as a Primary Stroke Center, as well as certified as a Chest Pain Center and a designated Heart Failure Center. We are one of the few hospitals in the community offering a comprehensive cardiovascular program. From cardiac experts in the emergency room to the most advanced techniques in open heart surgery, we are the hospital of choice for heart care. In fact, our STEMI efforts have reduced our door-toballoon time to less than 60 minutes, which is much lower than the national average. Our emergency department provides quality care with wait times consistently under 15 minutes. We also are continuing to expand our Orthopedic & Spine Institute, cancer program and neurosurgical services by adding the latest technologies and techniques. All of these advances are part of our ongoing dedication to serving the healthcare needs of the community. Lee Chaykin Chief Executive Officer Westside Regional Westside Regional Emergency Department For the past few years, HCA East Florida has been working diligently to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of its emergency rooms. The Cardiovascular Program Westside Regional offers a comprehensive cardiovascular program featuring a full range of diagnostic modalities, medical and surgical interventional procedures, rehabilitation, preventative care and additional medical and support services for patients with heart disorders. The program is comprised of a team of experienced surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, pulmonologists, internists and critical care nurses. These medical and surgical specialists combine their expertise to perform open heart surgery, minimally invasive heart valve repair and replacement, vascular and thoracic surgery, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, atrial fibrillation ablations and many other heart care services. Our facilities include dedicated cardiovascular operating rooms, cardiac catheterization labs and an EP lab which are equipped with the latest medical technology and available on a 24-hour elective and emergency basis. When a patient has symptoms of a cardiovascular disorder, the experts at Westside Regional get to the heart of the matter with diagnostic tests such as cardiac catheterization, electrocardiography (EKG), cardiac stress testing, CT angiography, radioisotope heart imaging (nuclear cardiology), echocardiography, vascular and arterial imaging, Holter monitoring and filmless heart imaging. Tests are performed using the most effective methods and are tailored to the individual needs of patients. Then, our cardiovascular team can perform a number of medical and surgical interventional procedures to help restore flow to the heart and correct abnormalities.
