The Back and Spine Center at Martin Memorial. Now anyone who suffers from back and neck pain can get fast and lasting relief at the Back and Spine Center, a comprehensive neurosurgery center on the Treasure Coast. It s all designed to get you back to doing all the activities you love. Pain-free. The Back and Spine Center at Martin Memorial. A big step in the advancement of neurosurgery. Our board-certified neurosurgeons and support team offer minimally invasive spine and brain procedures as well as non-surgical alternatives. Plus, our rapid referral system can get you an appointment with a neurosurgeon quickly or with a physician assistant the same day.
Meet our neurosurgeons. 2 The Back and Spine Center is led by three accomplished neurosurgeons. All are board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. back and spine center Dr. John K. B. Afshar specializes in surgical treatment of spinal and brain disorders, including cervical and lumbar disc herniations, fractures, degenerative disc disease and brain tumors. He provides minimally invasive techniques for his patients, such as cervical disc replacement and stereotactic radiosurgery. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical Center, where he also completed his internship and residencies. Dr. John R. Robinson Jr. specializes in the treatment of cervical and lumbar spine conditions as well as brain tumors using computer-guided, minimally invasive microsurgical and radiosurgical techniques. He graduated with honors in surgery from the University of South Florida, College of Medicine, and completed his internship and residency in neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. Dr. John J. Viola specializes in the treatment of brain and spinal tumors, persistent back pain, fractures, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, scoliosis, kyphosis and spine deformity, spinal stenosis, ulnar neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome. He earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed his internship and residency at Georgetown University Medical Center.

Meet your support team. The neurosurgeons at the Back and Spine Center are supported by a team of certified physician assistants who are trained in neurosurgery. 5 Theresa A. McGarry, PA-C, has served as a neurosurgical physician assistant since She earned her Associate of Science degree from the Kettering College of Medical Arts, graduating with high honors. She also studied nursing at the Miami Valley College of Nursing and Health in Dayton, Ohio. Emily J. Yonker, PA-C, earned a Master of Science in Medicine degree from Western Michigan University in the Physician Assistant Program. She has practiced as a PA in neurosurgery since back and spine center Tiffany L. Brown, PA-C, holds a Master of Science degree in physician assistant studies from Nova Southeastern University and a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science from Florida State University.
Minimally invasive procedures. 6 back and spine center Shorter hospital stays. Faster healing. Fewer complications. Quicker recovery times. These are the advantages of minimally invasive surgical procedures at the Back and Spine Center. Assisted by sophisticated computers, our neurosurgeons can reconstruct spinal columns, insert artificial discs, repair fractures and relieve pinched nerves with tiny incisions and often on an outpatient basis. One example, known as XLIF, allows us to perform spinal fusions that offer shorter hospital stays, less scarring and less post-operative discomfort. The procedure is less traumatic to abdominal organs, muscle tissues and blood vessels, because it goes through the side of the body instead of through the front. The lateral muscles are gently separated along the fibers to avoid cutting and tearing; no major organs are disturbed. At the Back and Spine Center, our goal is to offer our patients the latest in minimally invasive procedures to get you back to life faster.

Non-surgical alternatives. Neurosurgery isn t always the only answer for back and spine patients. That s why we also offer a wide range of non-surgical treatment options. 9 We have a dedicated physical therapist who can develop a customized treatment plan that you can implement at any of six Martin Memorial rehabilitation facilities in Martin and St. Lucie counties. Through partnerships with Martin Memorial Health Systems, we can develop a holistic approach for you that includes proper nutrition, exercise, weight management, acupuncture and therapeutic massage. back and spine center We can also partner with pain management and chiropractic specialists to help you relieve and control discomfort. Whatever is best for you is what we do at the Back and Spine Center.
Brain surgery and procedures. 10 back and spine center The Back and Spine Center is the premier neurosurgery center on the Treasure Coast that can perform the delicate procedures that address such a wide variety of cranial issues, including tumors, head trauma, fluid build up and vascular malformations. Tumors of the brain and spinal column can be treated with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and stereotactic surgery computer-guided beams that aggressively attack the tumor while preserving the healthy tissue around it. Head trauma a build up of blood on the surface of, or inside the brain caused by head injuries and falls can be relieved with surgery. Hydrocephalus or water on the brain is a build up of fluid surrounding the brain that can be relieved by surgically implanting a shunt to drain off the excess fluid. Arteriovenous malformations and other vascular malformations are abnormal collections of blood vessels that can cause bleeding within the brain. Treatments include surgical resection, radiation and embolization using a catheter to block the flow of blood through the vessels.

Streamlined diagnostics. 12 back and spine center The key to relieving your pain faster is diagnosing its cause faster. Your diagnosis will be coordinated through one of Martin Memorial s five convenient Imaging Centers. Each center has state-of-the-art MRIs, PET/CT scanners, bone densitometry and X-rays. That s why you can usually get an appointment with a neurosurgeon at the Back and Spine Center within 24 to 48 hours of your tests. You can even see a physician assistant the same day. Coordinating your diagnostic tests through Martin Memorial allows us to schedule your appointment immediately and begin your treatment plan sooner.
Our affiliation with Martin Memorial makes the Back and Spine Center the premier neurosurgery center on the Treasure Coast. In addition to the five Imaging Centers, Martin Memorial has a Health and Healing Department and a Health and Fitness Department to complete your treatment plan. In fact, with two hospitals, six rehabilitation facilities and numerous outpatient centers, Martin Memorial is the area s leader in health care. The Martin Memorial network of physicians makes it easier to coordinate care. That s why we re pleased to be a part of it.
