1 Moncton High School Staff Concerns Compiled September 2010 General Concerns Duct work needs to be cleaned and or blocked Lintels above bus slip doors are cracked No ventilation system Windows difficult to open and without screens Documented health concerns from 2007 and 2010 (attached) Facade of the school loose stones etc. (especially those above the entrances) Carbon Monoxide levels are too high Mold in the walls and airborne mould How do we know any remaining dust does not contain asbestos? Were areas where columns were recently fixed properly cleaned? Asbestos testing? Poor air quality All stairwells Electrical concerns one outlet in each room, sparks, shocks and plugs will fall out on their own Water damage Security issues office and VP area etc Peeling paint in many areas of school a sign of moisture or water damage? Many areas of the school are not wheelchair accessible No PA system in hallways and cafeteria

2 Music Room In the "drum room", which is the smaller room at the back of the classroom on the right (next to the outside wall), the walls are crumbling (students use this as a practice room) Cracked windows Windows don't open and in the winter there can be several months with no natural light if there is any amount of snow present. Area around ventilation vents are black and sooty Room is not properly designed to be a music room so there are sound level issues. The size of the music rooms (especially in the basement because of low ceilings) is dangerously inadequate for the decibel levels produced by performing classes and ensembles. Music rooms should be at least 1600 square feet with 20 foot ceilings, unparallel walls (to reduce standing waves) and acoustical treatments. Our current situation is a dangerous working environment Outside wall is bubbling and squishy Music Room/Drama Room hallway There is usually a puddle on the hallway floor in front of the girl s washroom near the elevator after any significant rain. Staff Washroom by the Change Rooms Cracks Room 101 Our transition room This is the meeting point for all the special needs students in the morning once they get off the bus to wait for their TA to arrive. This room is not built to accommodate this kind of learning and divisions for learning centers should be there with proper electrical. For autism students in crises, area to do the sensory diet activities, area to practice the self management skills, quiet room for story modeling, quiet area for social skills, personal hygiene. This is also for the OT, physio and other specialists area to come in and work with Ta and child and even with families. Drafts in all the windows located at floor level. 3 Holes in the wall - back left of classroom, in time out room and left of main door Wet ceiling tiles

3 Hallway outside of room 101 Ceiling open and dripping Wood and nails are exposed Wet ceiling tiles Room 104/106 Major water leaks and sagging ceiling In room 106, the middle set of windows in front of you have a large open gap where water damaged it severely In the 104 side behind the teacher s desk there is a major leak and water damage Rotting wood on window ledge in center of room Paint peeling and hole by window Room 105 Foul odour Book Room (By room 101) Check conditions of books. Many different departments storing books here (Humanities, French, English) and conditions are not ideal to store books. Potential for mold, etc. Room 108 Water damage Windows are warped Tiles falling down and stained

4 Room 109 Dark spots under bookcase Special Needs Bathroom near 111 We have many students that need to be physically lifted to place on the toilet. We do not have a lift that we feel is safe. TAs will carry the child. Not safe for child and the TA. Custodian Work Room on the corner in front of 111 Open wall Sink not washable - Like this in all custodians closets. Room 111 Water in small closet, dark stained ceiling tiles and exposed asbestos Smell of mold Room 113 (Chemistry Lab) Laminate counter top by window is warped Crumbling bricks above vents outside building/classroom Stairwell across from room 117 Have loose wire for telephone connection. There is no ramp of special needs students to leave the building on the first floor. If there would be a fire alarm, all the students in wheel chairs can not leave if on the first floor. The fireman needs to come in and get them in areas identified by the school.

5 Room 110 Bulk head in ceiling in main classroom leaks, every time it rains can hear water dripping. Lower storage area was flooded (several inches deep) jip rock was cut out and never replaced them, studs still visible and mouldy, bad air in entire area ( paint growing mould) Dark room has tiles missing and pipes exposed General bad odours in entire room, when custodial staff uses cleaners in other parts of school back area of room acquires chemical smells. Lights ballasts hum constantly some need to be replaced. Room 119 Hump in floor by the door Wooden sill by the windows is often wet and smells of mold Have holes recently placed in wall to repair columns been properly cleaned and fixed? Have pipes going to water heater been repaired? Wall on the left side down below windows and baseboards are very badly deteriorated. Asbestos issues Cafeteria Column on catwalk side - In the corner where major corner column is (near the catwalk), metal beam was installed because the column was falling in. Life span on this beam was indicated as 2-3 years which would be this year. How is it holding on? Cafeteria column on bus slip side - This column was falling out. What was done to stop it? Both columns are standing on nothing and are not anchored to the floor. Was this rectified in any way? There is a small ¼ door in the corner on the side of the old Knightwear shop. In this little closet, there is water and mold. It comes and goes. Why? Where does it come from? Where does it go? Why is PCO in our cafeteria most weeks? Where are the rodents coming in? Water percolates up from the floor during heavy rain. Area where custodial cleaning supplies are stored has an asbestos warning on door.

6 Quad Was the door where the tiles are behind the giant garbage can, fixed? It was a few inches short. Boiler room The floor is floating. If you walk and jump a little water comes out of the crack cut in the concert floor Ramp Tower door not up to code During the fire alarms, it is close to impossible to get all the students from the basement, third level and second level out in this Tower door area. Traffic is slowed down because of major ramp that is installed. This can t be safe for anyone. Room 201 Remove ceiling tiles and check for mould Electrical Outlets produce blue sparks when used Library Water leakage by photocopier and above windows Computer chain connections Limited space Ledge that surrounds rooms needs to be cleaned/wiped Check area behind server in AV Room Holes created by removing shelving units are quite deep and need to be filled in case of asbestos Room 207 Across from room 207 cast iron heater by door is so hot its burning the hardwood door.

7 Room 209 Leaking window (3 rd one over from the teacher s desk) Room 211 Foul smell Wet ceiling tiles Hallway outside of room 204 Sagging tiles above door Room 204 New water stains on ceiling Room 206 Constant water leakage. Fixed many years in a row but water keeps coming back. Wall is always wet and damp. Room 215 Leak from the outside wall of 323 seeps through the wall and drips from the top of the windows when it rains- especially the second to last window. Sometimes 3 buckets are needed all at once to collect the rainwater Foul odour Used to bleach the radiator every year to remove the mould no longer being done. Ballasts are leaking Lintels are causing water to leak into the room

8 Room 214 Strong musty smell Mold in heater and on the radiator Second Floor Boy s Bathroom across from room 215 Urine stains toilet seats are rusted Open door behind the wall Space for stalls Leaks on ceiling Room 221 Concerns of mold in walls, window ledge and above ceiling tiles. (stained tiles which have been painted over) Room 223 Top ledge beside the window paint is peeling from the ceiling Water leakage everywhere many attempts have been made to fix it but failed Room 225 Strong musty smell Ceiling tiles have been scrubbed Hallway outside of Room 225 Crack from ceiling to the floor Fire door is cracked and falling away from hinges

9 Gym If the wind is coming from the south water seeps into the building Tiles on the back wall of the gym are loose Water is coming from the ceiling in 2 major areas The floor in being damaged Stairwell by gym A crack that runs from top to bottom on both sides of the stairwell Old Gym Black mould in ceiling above stairwell between auditorium and Mountain Rd exit Stairs going up to the loft metal and slippery DANGER! Teaching station is loud and not up to provincial standards (lack of room) Old gym ceiling has water damage. Look up in the corners. The major square beams in this area have been fixed and rebuilt from the bottom. This is still falling apart. These are major columns but water have damaged its rigidity. Auditorium Water damage Corner going up to music room in stairway - there is a major opening along this corner. It was fixed, aesthetically, what about structure to hold it together. When it rains, water will go from balcony to the lower level. Electrical problem Upper Balcony Unsafe area because of location, (theft) electrical connection, subpar connections in chains

10 Room 303 A crack in the floor that runs the full width of the classroom Room 308 Ceiling tile above desk is about to fall down Stains on ceiling tiles The ballasts are leaking Room 327 Water stains on the ceiling tiles around the light fixture at the front of the room Underneath book shelf there is a sliding door for storage space smells of dampness and rodents Room next to 380 Foul odour Grime/dust/soot on the books and materials Is there mold under the carpet? Room 316 Concerns of mold in the walls and above ceiling tiles. Stained and warped ceiling tiles White powder constantly being found on the window ledge by teacher desk Foul odour Room 318 Strong musty smell Yellow ceiling tiles
