Project-based teaching and internships throughout your studies are key to all of our programs. Applied research projects are carried out in cooperation with the industry and society and are also incorporated in our Master s programs. Thus 60 percent of our project papers and final theses are written in cooperation with enterprises. Cologne, located in the heart of Europe, is the fourth largest and one of the oldest cities in Germany. 5 Introduction Master s at Cologne University of Applied Sciences Cologne University of Applied Sciences (CUAS) Fachhochschule Köln The city of Cologne with its vast offerings in the fields of education, culture and entertainment, is very strongly influenced by its almost 90,000 university students. Together with the city of Gummersbach at the outskirts of Cologne which is home to our faculty of modern IT-related programs and the new Leverkusen campus north of Co logne, the region constitutes an urban agglomera tion with multiple job opportunities. With approximately 21,500 students in over 45 disciplines taught by 450 professors, Cologne University of Applied Sciences is the largest of its kind in Germany. In light of its diversified and high-quality academic profile and research projects, Cologne University of Applied Sciences is a popular co-operation partner both inside and outside Germany and has close ties with various domestic and international universities. 11 faculties offer over 70 courses of study in engineering and social sciences as well as in the humanities, ranging from architecture via mechanical engineering and social work to business law and languages. In the fields of research and development, Cologne University of Applied Sciences is constantly looking for new challenges. Its research and technology transfer comprises products, processes and services from all the fields of science taught at the university. Cologne University of Applied Sciences currently offers 35 master s degrees courses. Numerous bridging courses assist students in starting their studies well. About 60 percent of all degree and project theses are drafted in cooperation with companies. Master s Degree at CUAS In the»bologna process«europe s education ministers resolved in 1999 to align the national degree qualifications in structure and content by Bachelor s and master s degree courses are now comparable all over Europe. The master builds up on the bachelor s degree and is more specialised. The course is characterised by high interdisciplinary content as the knowledge taught is not narrow in scope and both theory and practice from other courses are used. As master s degree courses are oriented to the research emphases of the specific discipline, their research content is high to promote new scientists. This degree isn t solely of interest to bachelor s degree holders. It also offers people already in employment a higher qualification leading to better career opportunities. All master s degree courses at Cologne University of Applied Sciences are properly accredited and approved. They usually take two years and are of modular structure. Each module can stand alone and is made up of several parts (lectures, exercises, seminars). Application, methodology and key skills knowledge is imparted as well as specialised knowledge. Each module the student passes earns him or her Credit Points so that the student can earn merit toward their degree throughout the course. The degree pass mark is made up of a degree thesis as well as these accumulated credit points. In humanities, courses a Master of Arts or of Laws is awarded, in natural sciences a Master of Science or of Engineering. ECTS credits 120 credits Description of Content Automation technology has been influenced primarily by developments in information technology (IT) for a quarter of a century now. These developments are of ever-increasing significance both in the areas of hardware and software. The international Master s programme Automation & IT is a fully-accredited programme with an innovative interdisciplinary focus. With respect to the above-mentioned trend, it covers the areas of both industrial automation and computer science. Strong connections to industry and well-equipped laboratory and research facilities enable students to gain experience in this exciting and emerging area. The Master s programme focuses on the following subject areas: Educational Organisation The Master s programme comprises 4 semesters: Semesters 1 and 2 impart technological know-how in the form of lectures, tutorials and laboratory courses. In semester 3, case studies are carried out in small teams of three to five students. In semester 4, the programme is concluded with the Master s thesis. The programme ends with the award of the degree Master of Engineering (MEng). The Master s degree course also expands students structural, processing and decision-making capabilities in complex situations. In particular, analytical thinking is cultivated as a pre-condition of a professional approach, as is responsible action in technical projects. With our state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, students are able to meet the demands of rapidly developing technologies. They are also able to take up responsible posts in the research, development, production, designing and management fields. Tuition Fees CUAS does not charge tuition fees. Enrolment Fees Approx. 230 EUR per semester. The fees include a semester ticket covering public transport in the Cologne metropolitan area. Costs of Living Approx. 750 EUR per month Job Opportunities The Institute for Automation & IT (AIT) offers research assistantships, job opportunities as assistant teachers, paid internships and job opportunities as part of the project collaboration with the industry. Language Requirements Certified proficiency in English: TOEFL (550 points), Computer TOEFL (213 points), Internet (80 points), IELTS (band 6.0), Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, Level C1 or equivalent certificate. Academic admission requirements For admission to the Master s programme»automation & IT«(MEng), the applicant is required to have successfully completed studies in the fields of Engineering Science or Computer Science (Bachelor s or comparable degree). 12 DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT The focus of the study program lies on the consolidation of theoretical knowledge in combination with practical scientific work in the field of communication systems and networks. This program is organized in cooperation with the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in St. Augustin. During the first semester some basic courses on fundamentals from the area of communication systems and networks are conveyed (advanced mathematics, networks and signal processing). In addition, the program is structured in such a way that students can focus on one of four different study profiles: Communication Systems Communication Networks Information Security Information Theory Within a profile students have to take at least four courses. To improve their scientific capabilities, students have to conduct an individual research project. A broad range of further modules from the fields of electrical engineering, optical technologies, informatics and media technologies are available as electives due to the close cooperation between both universities. A final Master s thesis completes the program in the third semester. The profiles Communication Systems and Information Theory are offered entirely in the English language. In the other profiles, the lectures are offered partly in English or in German. The thesis must also be written in English. Educational Organisation The educational organization is based on a regular start in March/summer semester. The study program has been developed in a modular way. Each module is assessed according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). This facilitates participation in European exchange programs. Each semester has a scope of 30 ECTS points, in total 90 ECTS. Each module counts for 5 ECTS. 1. COURSE OBJECTIVES Information and communication technologies are well established in nearly all industrial fields and in the private sector. The study program on Communication Systems and Networks allows students to achieve a deeper understanding of the complex features of modern and future communication systems and services. Economic and technological developments in the information and communications industry are strongly influenced by joint soft and hardware solutions and by system internetworking. A wide range of standards and technologies has to be used to find optimum solutions. Therefore, a broad interdisciplinary education is necessary in order to be able to cope with future problems. Job opportunities for Master s graduates can be found in the mobile radio and telecom sector, with companies who provide telecom components and installations, in consumer electronics, mechanical engineering and automobile industries, in research centres, and with public authorities. Applicants therefore need to meet one of the following requirements: a) TOEFL with at least 550 points on the paperbased test, 213 points on the computer-based test or 80 points on the internet-based test b) IELTS with 6.5 points c) An alternative language test with a test score equivalent to those of TOEFL and IELTS d) Prior enrolment of at least one year in a university programme conducted entirely in English e) Prior schooling of at least one year conducted entirely in English f) Completion of a suitable degree programme which included courses in Technical English comprising at least 3 credits. This specifically includes the degree programmes in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering at Cologne University of Applied Sciences. g) English as mother tongue Students may provide evidence of their English language proficiency within the first semester of the Master s programme. When choosing profiles which include German-language modules, students must additionally submit proof of the German Language Proficiency Test for Admission of Foreign Students (DSH first level) if they have not obtained their higher education entrance qualification at a German-language institution. 15 cordance with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and a final cumulative grade of 2.5 or better in the German grading system or equivalent. A degree programme is deemed suitable if it teaches competencies in the fields of mathematics, physics, electrical engineering and computer science comprising a total of at least 110 credits. If applicants do not meet 210 ECTS, they can only be admitted under the condition that they will be able to attest to the missing prerequisites before registering for the Master s thesis by having successfully completed specific courses offered in Bachelor s programmes or by approved internships in industry, respectively. The nature and scope of these conditions are individually determined by the examination board based on the courses completed by the applicant in his/her undergraduate programme. Admission to the Master s programme will be denied if the applicant has obtained a final cumulative grade of worse than 2.5. 17 DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT The international master s program Computer Science - Specialization in Information Systems covers the areas of computer science and business applications. It focuses on the linkage between both areas. Methodology and technology around this interface have developed as a discipline in its own right. Special attention is drawn to vertical information processes, data structures, applications and systems which are needed to fulfill an enterprise s management needs. The graduates of the master s program mainly work in IT and business consulting IT departments of larger companies They find a lot of opportunities in project management and in development of business applications as well as in service management. 19 in research projects as well as in projects with industry. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY The program Computer Science - Specialization in Information Systems is mainly held at the Gummersbach Campus. Gummersbach is a town with 50,000 habitants located 50 km east of Cologne, surrounded by a hilly landscape which is a recreational area for citizens from Cologne and other cities in its vicinity. The campus can be reached in a few minutes from Gummersbach train station. A train ride to Cologne, which is the cultural center of the region, takes one hour and ten minutes, and will be covered by the semester ticket which is included in the semester fee. The CUAS s Institute of Computer Science holds primary responsibility for the master s program Computer Science. Its 27 professors, modern educational concepts, close relations to industry and a modern IT infrastructure give a rich foundation of future-oriented studies to about 1,500 students in a broad range of courses (Computer Science, Business Information Systems, Media Informatics etc.). In the CUAS s Institute of Computer Science, there are many software systems available for educational purposes, amongst others systems of market-leading vendors like SAP, Oracle and Microsoft.
