5 Welcome to the International Executive MBA At the School of Management and Law, you become part of an international business elite. In the economy of the 21st century, the need for leaders with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of global business is increasing rapidly. International competencies are the key to survival in today s borderless competition. The growing dynamic of international markets, the increas ing influence of different contexts and cultures, the diminishing duration of competitive advantage, and permanent uncertainty about developments in a company s business environment all demand managerial and leadership skills that are not dealt with adequately in traditional business education. The International Executive MBA (IEMBA) has been designed specifically with these requirements in mind and prepares corporate leaders for the demanding tasks of a global economy. A strong emphasis on advanced general management skills, a revolutionary, culture-conscious and application-focused approach to leadership training, and a strategy-driven, tool-based approach to international business make this program unique. With a particular focus on business ethics and corporate responsibility, it also incorporates the lessons learned from the recent world-wide financial crisis. Dr. Daniel Seelhofer Program Director The School of Management and Law at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences has a long tradition of excellence in teaching and executive training. As the largest and one of the most international business schools at any Swiss University of Applied Sciences, it is uniquely qualified to provide you with the right skills for your next career move. So become part of the elite. We are looking forward to working with you. 5

18 Integration Activities Kick-off Seminar During this initial seminar you will be introduced to the program in general and its reference case study in particular. Solving fundamental business problems in small groups will give you the opportunity to realize your strong and weak spots vis-à-vis general management at the outset of the program while getting to know your classmates and developing a positive class dynamic. The goal is to realize the upcoming challenges, prepare yourself mentally for them, and understand how you may best profit from them. The seminar takes place at Lilienberg Unternehmerforum, a conference center in beautiful Ermatingen, on the shores of Lake Constance. International Business Simulation Pressure makes diamonds, as they say. True to this statement, the program s concluding week will allow you to apply all the skills you have learned over the course of the program during five highly pressurized days. Following the model of intensive weeks in corporate high-potential programs, you will work in small teams to solve a major business crisis set within the framework of the program s reference case study. Observed and coached by a team of lecturers, you will be particularly able to practice your individual leadership skills apply the organizational leadership methodology learned during the program to assess problems, analyze situations, develop plans, and direct on-going actions use your knowledge of international business to develop well-founded concepts and strategies use your understanding of business ethics and corporate responsibility to reflect on decisions to be made and moderate them where warranted exercise and demonstrate your mental flexibility by taking on various team roles The week will conclude with a feedback day during which the team of coaches will perform an after-action review of the simulation and discuss your performance as a class, in teams, and individually. Regional Business Development The two study trips that take place during terms two and three will allow you to immerse yourself in unfamiliar cultures and to put theoretical frameworks of cross-cultural management into practice. You will learn about business in regions of high importance to the Swiss economy, get a feel for local business practices, and conduct some initial networking and relationship management. In contrast to many similar programs, you will not spend all your time in just one location. Rather, these exciting module components have the clear intent to give you a well-rounded introduction to an area that you can use as a starting point to develop your own regional networks. Starting at prestigious partner universities of the School of Management and Law, local experts will introduce you to the region s history, economy, culture, and prevalent business practices, before you will move on to other locales with ties to the Swiss economy. By visiting local companies and subsidiaries of multinational firms, by interacting with Western expatriate managers, native entrepreneurs, and government representatives, and by experi encing various other aspects and parts of the region, you will be able to mentally translate theories into practice and get ready for business. Designated destinations for the program s study trips are four emerging markets of increasing importance to the Swiss economy. They correspond to the Center for International Business s four focus regions for research and consulting. 18

19 China China has become highly important to the Swiss economy during the past decade. Not just large multinational firms, but also a steadily increasing number of small and medium-sized companies are active there, both for man u facturing purposes and as an increasingly important consumer market. Yet success is by no means automatic, as many of them have found out. Eastern Europe and Russia Following the fall of the Iron Curtain and the integration of various Middle and Eastern European countries into the European Union, Swiss firms have developed strong ties in the region. At the same time, Russia continues to pose many challenges to firms interested in developing business in the region. India India has recently joined the group of the twelve largest economies in the world, and its information technology and chemicals sectors are now among the world s leaders. A rising number of Swiss firms is active in the world s largest democracy, despite various obstacles that remain. Middle East The Middle East plays a major role both in world politics and in global energy development. In recent years, an increasing number of Swiss firms, particularly from the hotel, finance, and construction industries, have established a presence in the region which is expected to further grow in importance during the coming decades. 19
