4 To apply see page 8 About The Courses By 2013 all nursing courses will be at degree level. At Anglia Ruskin University the quality of our tutors, facilities and reputation make it one of the simpler choices you ll have to make. The 1st step is making Anglia Ruskin your 1st choice when you apply to UCAS. Why study pre-registration nursing at Anglia Ruskin University? Anglia Ruskin University is one of the first universities in the country to have met the Nursing and Midwifery Council s (NMC) new pre-registration nursing education standards. To date (August 2011), only 12 universities in England and Scotland have fulfilled the new criteria, which are designed to ensure that newly-qualified nurses are prepared for the future needs of patients and employers. Our NMC approved course enables students to achieve the qualification of a BSc (Hons) Nursing in adult, mental health, or children s nursing and become a registered nurse (RN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Our nursing lecturers are a highly motivated and experienced team of academics who provide a studentcentred approach to learning both in the university and in the clinical setting. We work in close partnership with over 35 NHS Trusts and Independent areas to ensure students are well supported to learn in the clinical arena. Anglia Ruskin University has fully equipped skills laboratories with a range of the latest simulation equipment. Nursing Nurses form the largest group of staff in the NHS. As a nurse you provide excellent standards of care to patients, their families and carers, who put their trust in your professional abilities. Nurses are in a very privileged position delivering essential care to patients and families during their time of need. These essential caring skills range from washing and feeding patients, through to mental health support, health promotion and technological advances in monitoring and caring for the critically ill patient. You will work within an inter-professional team, co-ordinating and leading care for and with your patient. This care is delivered in a variety of settings (e.g. nursing homes, medical or surgical wards, operating departments, GP Practices, patient s homes, schools and many more). Practice Learning The course requires you to undertake clinical placements (30 hours per week), working closely with mentors and the nursing team. Competencies are assessed by qualified mentors who support the assessment process. In order to provide opportunities for you to learn through safe practice and to allow you to develop a sense of professional identity you will be prepared for clinical practice during the first module, through activities within the skills laboratory, which will also involve service users and carer s feedback and evaluation of skills. You will be fully prepared to attend the clinical areas following completion of the first module. You will be facilitated to reflect upon your practice experiences and demonstrate your reflective ability through individual and group work. Learning from and through practice in the clinical environment will require you to complete practical assessments in the form of performance criteria, which are fine graded and will contribute towards the final degree classification. When placed in practice areas you will be supervised by qualified mentors. These mentors are skilled, motivated practitioners, familiar with current practices. All will have attended the NMC approved mentorship programme and attended a yearly mentor update workshop to ensure they have a sound knowledge of the curriculum, the purpose and processes of the award and the requirements of the NMC. During the first two years of the programme you will spend 50% of the practice placement in the hospital and 50% in the community, working within individual homes, nursing homes, the voluntary and independent sector and surgeries. In the final year of the programme you will be placed either in the community or in the hospital. Course content Course content has been designed to enable you to meet the standards of competency set by the NMC. We work in close partnership with our clinical colleagues to ensure that the content remains contemporary within the changing healthcare arena. You will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own personal and professional development. By the end of the course you will be competent and able to use reflective skills and research to underpin practice, and make sound clinical decisions. You will be able to facilitate change and be innovative in your approach to holistic care within an inter-professional team. I was initially attracted to the course because it combined intellectual stimulation with being people-focused and practical. I also wanted to gain a qualification which would form the basis for a satisfying and interesting career. The course is varied which I enjoy most of the lectures are interesting and thought provoking, I enjoy discussing topics within my IBL group. I particularly enjoy being on placement when I can get involved and put the theory into practice. We are on placement for 50% of our time which provides me with the experience of putting the theory into practice. Working with experienced staff in a variety of settings is very valuable. The main thing is to be organised and plan ahead. Mary Roots. Student, BSc (Hons) Mental Heath Nursing CASE STUDY 04 05

5 To apply see page 8 Call Course Content Adult Nursing Adult nurses work with old and young adults with diverse health conditions, both chronic and acute, within both hospital and community settings. An essential part of the role is the promotion of health through education, the prevention of disease and the care, sustenance and rehabilitation of adults undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic regimes. MoDULES Level 1 Preparation for professional practice in health and social care Research and study skills Practising health and social care Level 2 Promoting health and wellbeing Maintaining professional healthcare standards Long term conditions and end of life care Level 3 Understanding and responding to acute changes in health Managing and monitoring quality in healthcare Undergraduate major project What do adult nurses do? In the hospital, being an adult nurse will require you to work in surgical departments, operating departments, medical departments and in the intensive or high dependency care areas. You will also play a central role in caring for patients following trauma or sudden illness, as part of the team in the emergency medical services area of the hospital. Many patients are older, and this is another area where you will be deeply involved in care management. Nurses can also be found working in many different areas of the community. Community nursing teams provide high quality professional care to the large number of patients cared for in their own home. Practice nurses are part of the team at the local GP surgery. Nurses also work in industry and commerce, providing health screening and support for the workforce. The diversity and scope of adult nursing practice is extremely wide and offers many exciting career pathways and opportunities. Our adult nursing course will prepare you to take your place in this dynamic and fast moving sphere. Career progression: Opportunities for adult nurses are very broad and can include specialising within the community such as practice nursing, cancer care nursing and school nursing. Within the hospital setting there will be many opportunities to become nurse specialists or nurse consultants in a range of specialities. In addition there are opportunities to further progress into education, research or management of healthcare. Child Nursing A children s nurse is presented with a host of nursing challenges ranging from a sick newborn, to an adolescent involved in an accident. Beyond the specialised professional skills, you must also have the personal ability to relate to children and young people as well as being able to communicate effectively with their families. MoDULES Level 1 Preparation for professional practice in health and social care Research and study skills Practising health and social care Level 2 Assessing the health needs of children and young people Factors that impact on the health and wellbeing of children and young people Developing essential core skills for children and young people Level 3 Caring for the seriously ill child and young person Managing and monitoring quality in healthcare Undergraduate major project What do children s nurses do? Children s nurses care for babies, children and young people (from birth to about 18 years of age) and their families/carers. You will need to know how to minimise the impact of illness or hospital admission on a child, which will mean working in very close partnerships with parents, families and/or carers. Children s nursing students learn to recognise the influence that environmental, social, cultural and developmental factors have on the child s health. You will learn to combine these with the recognition that child-rearing practices vary and that children have individual needs. The Anglia Ruskin nursing care programme considers all these aspects. Career progression: Qualified children s nurses have opportunities to develop careers in advanced clinical/professional specialism s, including community care, specialist nurse practitioner, consultant nurse, modern matron, management of healthcare, research studies and nurse education. Mental Health Nursing Interpersonal skills and communication are the central focus of mental health nursing as you need to be able to connect with people in a meaningful way. As a mental health nurse, you play a vital role in the assessment of needs and the implementation of an appropriate plan of care to promote recovery from mental health problems. You will usually work within a multiprofessional team helping to care for people across all ages who are experiencing some challenges to their mental wellbeing. Your involvement will also extend to working with service users carers and families. MoDULES Level 1 Preparation for professional practice in health and social care Research and study skills Practising health and social care Level 2 The philosophy and values of mental health nursing Evidence based mental health care Experiencing and understanding mental health practice Level 3 Course name UCAS Code Duration Therapeutic interventions in the context of mental health nursing Managing and monitoring quality in healthcare Undergraduate major project What do mental health nurses do? One in four of us will experience a mental health problem in our lifetime, and mental health nurses play a vital role in the management and recovery of those needing care. Along with general skills of communication, mental health nurses also develop specialist skills required when working with vulnerable groups, such as how to interact with people hearing voices, and working with children and young people with mental health issues. The unique nature of mental health nursing also poses significant legal and ethical responsibilities which are not to be found in other areas of healthcare. A mental health nurse also helps to meet the needs of mental health clients/users and their carers in both community and in-patient care settings. To be effective as a mental health nurse, you will have to learn to work in partnership with mental health users and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. In this way, you enable clinical practice to reflect the diversity of the belief systems and cultural expectations of people who use mental health services. One of the aims of being a mental health nurse is to enhance and promote efficient and effective practice that is evidence-based. Career Progression: Registered mental health nurses can work in a variety of care settings and different specialist teams. These include acute in-patient care and assertive outreach, home treatment and early intervention services and community mental health teams. The thing I most enjoy about the course is being out in practice, working alongside children and their parents is rewarding and challenging in equal measure. No two shifts are ever the same and there is always something new to learn. As a student you are in a good position there will be times when you can stand back and learn through observing qualified staff. At other times you will be expected to work on your own initiative but you always have the support of your colleagues. The course has exceeded my expectations in the sense that I didn t realise just how much I was going to develop personally. I feel my inter-personal skills and confidence in dealing with difficult situations have improved. My time on the course has shown me that good nursing extends beyond addressing a person s clinical need. You need to be a good communicator and work well as part of a team. I would recommend the course to others as there is a good balance of theory and practise, plus the opportunity to work in a broad range of clinical settings. James Robinson. Further information can be obtained from our Contact Centre. HEALTH In Cambridge, we have a medical centre and a GP branch surgery, and in Chelmsford we have an on site GP practice. These provide a comprehensive confidential range of services, including finding dental and optical treatment to ensure your health is well cared for. EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY We take a proactive approach to promoting equality of opportunity. Our aim is to provide an environment that values diversity and supports students effectively, whatever their background or personal circumstances. Our policy states our commitment to eliminate all forms of unlawful discrimination, direct, indirect or institutional. We require all students and staff to behave in a nondiscriminatory way. We ask them to help us identify and change institutional processes and practices that deny or limit equality of opportunity. Harassment on any grounds is unacceptable and will be dealt with swiftly when it is brought to our attention. Our university has a range of equality policies that apply to all students and staff which are published on our website. The overarching Valuing Diversity and Promoting Equality Policy is also featured in staff and student handbooks.
