CHALLENGING STIMULATING INSPIRING Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing with registration EXPERIENCE LIFE AS A KING S NURSE.

EXCELLENCE Located in the very heart of London, the School was established by Florence Nightingale in 1860 as the world s first professional school of its kind. Since then, we have established a reputation for producing world-class clinicians and for 100% employability from our nursing programmes. It is because of our strong links with industry, health services and policy-makers that our graduates are highly sought after both nationally and internationally. We are renowned for the quality of our research and pride ourselves on academic staff who are approachable, available and supportive to all our students. These are just some of the reasons why we are ranked as the No.1 School of Nursing in London (Complete University Guide 2012). LEARN MORE ABOUT BECOMING A KING S NURSE >>

INNOVATION Our PG Dip in Nursing is an innovative programme that enables graduates from other disciplines to gain professional registration in Adult, Children s or Mental Health nursing in just two years. The focus is on high-quality care, cutting-edge clinical skills and research. As a King s nurse, you will learn the pivotal roles of nurse and client while developing your own nursing skills and knowledge of professional and ethical practice. Programme outcomes are fulfilled through a combination of Accredited Prior Learning and learning acquired during the nursing programme. QUICK FACTS Pathways: Adult Nursing; Children s Nursing; Mental Health Nursing Duration: Two years, full time Location: Primarily Waterloo Campus, with clinical practice in local NHS Trusts and independent healthcare providers Accreditation: Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Awarding institution: King s College London Credit value (UK/ECTS equivalent): UK 120/ECTS 60 Programme leader: Dr Jaqualyn Moore King s nurses study physiology, professional practice, research, evidence-based practice, policy and clinical leadership to equip you for professional life beyond your first years in post. The PG Dip is awarded to students who complete the modules from a Master s programme, but do not write the Master s dissertation, and all our students meet the registration requirements of the NMC. Students keen to continue their studies can choose to write the dissertation, leading to the award of an MSc. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU WILL BE STUDYING >>

ED FISHER PG Dip, Adult Nursing pathway The fact that the PG Dip is a two-year course is a major incentive when you already have a degree. The School has been great for supporting students, both on the ward and in the classroom, which is always needed on any nursing course. SOPHIE HEWITSON PG Dip, Adult Nursing pathway I ve been studying the PG Dip for a year now and I m really enjoying it. I ve met amazing people and am learning a really unique set of skills. I m proud of being a nursing student, so I definitely recommend the PG Dip. OUR EMPLOYMENT PARTNERSHIPS >>

PARTNERSHIP The Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery is highly regarded among leading London NHS Trusts because we are able to offer our students unrivalled learning opportunities. Our strong record of success in collaborating with key healthcare providers means that King s students graduate with exemplary care and clinical skills, first-rate professionalism and the self-confidence that employers demand. While studying at the School, you will gain practical experience in a variety of clinical settings. Our clinical placements give you the opportunity to employ an evidence-based approach to care and to work with patients, clients and families from a broad range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

EXPERIENCE Placement experiences bring nursing to life. Clinical experience is undertaken across a range of carefully selected healthcare settings to ensure acquisition of essential nursing skills. Whether it is at a world-renowned hospital or within a community setting, King s placements are designed to give you a broad understanding of the full spectrum of healthcare provision in a rapidly-changing health environment. The range of healthcare providers in London is truly unique, when compared to the rest of the UK. This is why the School continues to add to its portfolio of NHS and independent healthcare organisations to enhance the placement experiences of our students. KING'S HEALTH PARTNERS King s College London is part of King s Health Partners, one of only five Academic Health Sciences Centres (AHSC) in the UK organisations that deliver healthcare to patients and undertake health-related science and research. A common feature of many of the world s leading hospitals and universities, being part of an AHSC brings unique clinical and research opportunities to students. King s Health Partners combines a well-respected, research-oriented university and three successful NHS Foundation Trusts bringing together world-class research, teaching and clinical practice. Our reputation for excellence also extends beyond graduation as we are the largest provider of continuing personal and professional development for nurses and midwives in London. WHAT KING S STUDENTS SAY ABOUT THEIR CAREER PROSPECTS >>

LAURA KING PG Dip, Children's Nursing pathway One of the best things about studying at King s is the NHS Trusts that you have the opportunity to work in, which are undoubtedly some of the best in the UK. No matter how much, or how little, healthcare experience you have, the staff and students are really supportive. DANIEL CULLEN PG Dip, Mental Health Nursing pathway From day one on placement, you will hear So, you re from King s? That s impressive. Employers recognise the School s reputation for success and, incidentally, why students from the School have 100% employability rate post-registration. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND CAREER PROSPECTS >>

AMBITION ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To study to become a King s nurse, we ask that you have a 2nd Class Honours degree (or equivalent) and 575 hours of healthcare-related experience (equivalent to approximately 4 months of full-time work). What is considered to be healthcare related experience? First aid; lifeguarding duties; befriending older people or those with mental health problems; charity work involving communicating with people with healthcare needs; running a lunch club as a volunteer; working as a youth leader to give health promotion advice (e.g. about sexual health or healthy eating); voluntary work overseas on public health projects; and working in a pharmacy giving health and over-the-counter medication advice. As a student at the No.1 school of nursing in London, you can expect to graduate with excellent career prospects. Our students have gone on to become some of the world s finest clinicians, specialist nurses and leaders. Our reputation for 100% employability covers more than traditional healthcare career paths. From hospitals to aid agencies, community health centres to the military, schools to private enterprises, King s nurses enjoy a wide range of national and international job opportunities. TELL US ABOUT YOUR RELEVANT EXPERIENCE >>

ACCREDITATION OF PRIOR AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING (APEL) The typical duration for a pre-registration nursing programme is three years or more. King s can offer its two-year PG Dip course to students who can provide Accreditation of Prior and Experiential Learning (APEL). APEL is the formal recognition of skills and knowledge you already possess, which takes into account: Organised prior learning, where the learning has been assessed and where certificates are awarded on completion Learning gained through unstructured experiences and short courses, arising through leisure pursuits, family experiences and work experience Applicants who are successful at the screening stage of the PG Dip admissions process are required to submit an APEL claim form before an offer to study at the School can be made. FAQs about APEL How long will the APEL claim form take to complete? We estimate that it will take you around two to three hours to complete the form. What kind of evidence should I provide? You can provide evidence from your previous degree(s), any short courses you have undertaken, work experience and life experiences. Where you have transcripts or certificates, please include copies with your claim form. Where do I go for help or if I have any questions? Please Sue Woodward, Chair of the Accreditation Panel, who will answer any specific questions you may have: sue.woodward@kcl.ac.uk When should I return the form? To ensure your application is processed swiftly, you should return the form to us as soon as it is completed, preferably within four weeks of receiving it. What happens after I have returned the form? Your completed form will be assessed by the relevant Accreditation Panel to determine whether you have sufficient prior and experiential learning. How soon will I know if my APEL claim has been successful? We aim to let you know whether or not you have been successful within two weeks of receiving your claim. FIND OUT ABOUT FUNDING >>

INFORMATION ON FUNDING If you are a UK resident, your fees will be paid by the Department of Health. You will also receive an annual grant of 1,000 and may be eligible for a means-tested bursary and a non means-tested maintenance loan. This financial support is made available to all students because the programme involves clinical placements spanning 37 hours per week for part of the year. The programme usually covers more hours of study per week than other courses, which reduces the time available to students to supplement income with part-time work. King's cannot advise you on the value of your NHS Bursary award. You can estimate how much you are likely to receive by using the bursary calculator on the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) website: Decisions regarding eligibility and the value of your award will be made by the NHSBSA only after it receives your application. NHS means tested bursary: This is an allowance to cover day-to-day living costs. The value will depend on your individual circumstances (e.g. your parents income, if living at home, or that of a spouse/ partner is taken into account). Please note: The NHS Bursary rules changed in July Applicants should view the latest information on the NHSBA website: Non means-tested maintenance loan: You may be entitled to a non means-tested maintenance loan for one or two years of your programme. This will depend on how many years' of financial support you received for your first degree. It is unusual for students to receive more than four years support in total and any student loan has to be repaid when you start working. Additional Allowances: You may be eligible for additional means-tested allowances, such as a Dependant s Allowance, a Parent s Learning Allowance, if you have children, and a Childcare Allowance if you have childcare costs. Reimbursement of travel costs to clinical placements may be provided when these are in excess of your usual travel costs to King s. Important: This information was collated in September 2011 and does not include changes to Department of Health regulations notified after 5 September SEE WHAT KING S HAS TO OFFER >>

HOLLY PENALVER PG Dip, Children's Nursing pathway King's has got a great reputation, and the teaching is fantastic. Also, the PG Dip isn't offered everywhere and, in some universities, they still only do the degree programme. ROSIE CARR PG Dip, Mental Health Nursing pathway King s have a unique philosophy that links clinical practice with academic research, making the course dynamic, challenging and relevant. But it s not all books and bedpans! Staff and other students are a great source of support and I ve met some fantastic, inspiring people on this course. HOW TO APPLY >>

IT ALL STARTS HERE... HOW TO APPLY If you are interested in studying for the PG Dip in Nursing at King s, you need to apply via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Apply online at the UCAS website: The UCAS codes you will need for your application are shown below: Institution code name: KCL Institution code: K60 Adult Nursing: B741 Children s Nursing: B731 Mental Health Nursing: B761 If your application is shortlisted, you will be invited to attend a Selection Day. This gives you the opportunity to meet our staff, current students and some of our clinical partners so you can get a sound understanding of the programme and what studying at King s is like. It also allows you to meet other applicants and to experience the wide range of facilities King s has to offer. What to expect At your Selection Day, you will be asked to complete two short tests in literacy and numeracy, which take just 20 minutes each. Samples can be found at: study/applicants/preregistration/selectiondays/tests.aspx. The tests are followed by a brief presentation, which will help to answer any questions you may have about the programme, the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery or King s College London. If you are successful in the tests, we ask you to participate in a group discussion where you will have the chance to meet members of the academic staff and talk to them about your future at King s and beyond.
