1 Network as a Resource: Yet Another Resource of IaaS Tomohiro Kudoh Information Technology Research Institute, National Institute of Advanced d Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) tkudoh@ t.kudoh@ aist.go.jp
Cloud computing and IaaS IaaS provides IT infrastructure (hardware) on demand. IaaS provider owns a large amount of physical resources (computers, storages), and provide a fragment of them to each user through virtualization. Application software Operating system System software Hardware such as computers, storages Conventional Computing system SaaS (Software as a Service) PaaS (Platform as a Service) IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) Cloud 2
3 IaaS IaaS provides Virtualized Infrastructures(VI) to users on demand. What is VI? A user can use a VI as if it is a dedicated infrastructure of him/her. Providers construct VIs using their physical resources (computers, storages), and provides them to users A VI is isolated from other VIs or physical infrastructure Shift from owning to using Users do not have to own their own resources Infrastructure is provided when needed
4 Well-organized infrastructure t Multiple isolated VIs (per request) Easy to use, high utilization (3) Use Virtualized Infrastructure (1) Request (2) Provide IaaS provider Data Center
5 Data centers are the key components Data center: a large number of computers and storages located at a place A large number of homogeneous resources reduces the operation cost A data center is dynamically y shared by a large number of users through virtualization Utilization ratio will be high
6 Problem of current IaaS (1) Most of the current business clouds target on nondata intensive applications There is a large demand for data intensive services Data intensive services will include Video on demand service NHK plans to start 8K SHV broadcast at 2020 Video sharing service YouTube started 4K service Sensor gathered data processing services Data backup and migration services
7 Problem of current IaaS (2) Network has been considered as an as is resource in current IaaS platforms Since services are provided using network (between user and provider as well as between resources), network is a key component of IaaS However, network is supposed to be a nonmanageable resource It is not easy to provide data intensive services Performance of best-effort network is not sufficient both in terms of bandwidth and stability
8 Networks to be considered For data intensive services, chunks of data are moved (copied) from IaaS to user, and inside IaaS. Computing service Intra-DC network User-IaaS network Inter-DC network Storage service IaaS
9 Network as a resource In computing systems, hardware components such as CPUs, memories and storages are resources. In IaaS, resources are managed by resource managers, and a user can use them while they are allocated to the user. Network itself should be also considered as a resource and bandwidth should be allocated to users appropriately. To use network as a resource, an interface to request bandwidth dt (circuit) cu from service clients (users / applications / middleware suites) is required. The interface should be compatible with the interface for computing/storage resources
10 Network service for IaaS Resource management is one of the key issues. Middleware should allocate appropriate resources, including network resources, according to user s request. Network resource manager should provide resource management service to the middleware. Network Service A standard open interface between the middleware and network resource manager is required, but not yet established.

12 G- lambda project ( lambda.net/) Joint project of KDDI R&D labs., NTT, NICT and AIST. The goal of this project is to define a web services interface (GNS-WSI) thorough which user/application can request e2e bandwidthguaranteed connection, considering future commercial service.
13 Screen shot from demonstration at 2006 GLIF meeting Computers in Japan and US and network between them are dynamically provisioned simultaneously by request
14 OGF (Open Grid Forum) NSI( Network Service I/F) WG Target: standardization of an I/F to request dynamic network (initially, E2E) connections At this moment, R&E network providers (i.e. Internet2, GEANT2, i2cat etc.) are the main participants. i t The user/application/middleware may request network services from one or more network service providers through the network service interface. Network Service Framework Informational Document is now under public comment (until Sep. 24) at: Chairs: Guy Roberts (Dante), Tomohiro Kudoh (AIST), Inder Monga (ESnet)
15 Conclusion Cloud will be the major future IT infrastructure From owning to using High performance network supports future IaaS A huge amount of data will be handled by IaaS Toward true virtual infrastructure Bandwidth guarantee is one of the keys Fine granularity (10Mbps~) path support will be required Application driven dynamic network Network service provides users with access to dynamic network provisioning
