GOD S WORD TODAY Picking up on themes begun in last week s readings, today s scriptures focus our attention on how we use the gifts God gives us. The letter of Saint James is a stark condemnation of the misuse of wealth: You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter. The people he describes are those who withheld wages, thereby causing others to become poor. Jesus tells us that we should cut off whatever it is that causes us to sin. These readings make these autumn weeks a time for deep self-searching. What are the things that fatten our hearts? How do we use the gifts God gives? Are we dedicating a portion of our salaries to the work of the Church and charitable groups? Are we on the road to becoming good stewards of God s creation? From Saint Margaret Mary Sunday Missal, J. Please pray for peace as they seek safety and help, in the midst of the civil and economic strife in the Middle East and other parts of the world. Catholic Relief Services is working with their Church partners in Greece, Albania, Macedonia, and Serbia to support families with immediate assistance including food, water, access to sanitation, legal services, medical care and trauma counseling. CRS remains faithful to our principles to support those in greatest need, regardless of national, religious, and ideological beliefs. The Mass promoting healing for victims-survivors of child and youth sexual abuse and for their families. It is also a calling to the Catholic Community and society for continued vigilance, honoring Christ s mandate to protect the dignity and sanctity of all God s children and young people. All are invited & welcome! Pet Food Collection The Social Justice and Service Committee will be collecting donations of pet food on this weekend and next weekend, October 3rd and 4th. The collection will support the work of Pets for Life, an agency of the Humane Society that provides pet food for low income families who would otherwise not be able to keep their pets. The families helped by Pets for Life live in the Lawndale and Little Village neighborhoods. Items most needed are: -Bags of dry cat and dog food -Canned dog and cat food -Cat litter -Litter pans/scoops -Kong or Nylabone brand chew toys -Dog crates either wire or plastic in all sizes Please keep this collection in mind as you shop during the next of week. A collection barrel is in the Commons to receive your donations. Thank you! SPECIAL COLLECTION This weekend, September 26/27, there is a special collection for the Seminaries now called the Seminarian Education Fund Appeal. Funds will go specifically to the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. The funds help to underwrite archdiocesan costs related to tuition and fees, and other formation programs for these men. There will be special envelopes in the pews which you can use to make a donation. Thank you in advance for your generosity. STEWARDSHIP Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. (MARK 9:41) Does your life reflect the life of Jesus? Remember, we were made in His image. We tend to forget this. When others see you, do they see the face of Jesus? When you look at others, do you see the face of Jesus in them?

But they still can be with us in the Body of Christ when the Eucharist is brought to them in their home or nursing home. Old St. Mary s Parish is renewing and reorganizing its Ministry of the Eucharist to the Homebound. Do you know folks in our parish who would appreciate this ministry of sacrament and fellowship? Prophet Muhammed is reported to have said: Islam is founded on five pillars; to testify that there is no deity except God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God; to establish the ritual prayers; to give charity (to the needy); to perform the pilgrimage to the House (of worship in Makkah); and to fast during the month of Ramadan.
