2 Page Two OLD ST. MARYʼS CHURCH September 27, 2015 O P M Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the South Loop and greater Chicago area. As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society. Like us on Facebook OLD ST. MARY S IS WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE. Large print missalettes are available near the entrance. Please return them after Mass. Special hosts are available in the sacristy for those who are gluten intolerant. Do you have difficulty walking to the front of the church for communion? Please ask an usher to let the communion ministers know where you are so the ministers can bring communion to you. Receiving the Body of Christ is too important to miss out. The ministers do scan the congregation, so if you forget to let an usher know, put your hand up so they can see you. We want to accommodate you. GOD S WORD TODAY Picking up on themes begun in last week s readings, today s scriptures focus our attention on how we use the gifts God gives us. The letter of Saint James is a stark condemnation of the misuse of wealth: You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter. The people he describes are those who withheld wages, thereby causing others to become poor. Jesus tells us that we should cut off whatever it is that causes us to sin. These readings make these autumn weeks a time for deep self-searching. What are the things that fatten our hearts? How do we use the gifts God gives? Are we dedicating a portion of our salaries to the work of the Church and charitable groups? Are we on the road to becoming good stewards of God s creation? From Saint Margaret Mary Sunday Missal, J. S. Paluch Company HOSPITALITY The Social Justice and Service Committee will be hosting Hospitality for the 6 PM Mass on the First Sunday of the month. Start date is Sunday, October 4th. Join us for 30 minutes of fellowship and snacks. All are Welcome! Old St. Mary s Catholic Church invites you and your pet to a Blessing of the Animals Saturday, October 3, 2015, at 1 pm in our Wabash Parking lot. The blessing will occur rain or shine. For the safety and protection of the animals, all pets need to be on a leash or in a carrier.

The families helped by Pets for Life live in the Lawndale and Little Village neighborhoods. Items most needed are: -Bags of dry cat and dog food -Canned dog and cat food -Cat litter -Litter pans/scoops -Kong or Nylabone brand chew toys -Dog crates either wire or plastic in all sizes Please keep this collection in mind as you shop during the next of week. SPECIAL COLLECTION This weekend, September 26/27, there is a special collection for the Seminaries now called the Seminarian Education Fund Appeal. Funds will go specifically to the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. The funds help to underwrite archdiocesan costs related to tuition and fees, and other formation programs for these men. There will be special envelopes in the pews which you can use to make a donation. Thank you in advance for your generosity. STEWARDSHIP Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. (MARK 9:41) Does your life reflect the life of Jesus? Remember, we were made in His image. We tend to forget this. When others see you, do they see the face of Jesus? When you look at others, do you see the face of Jesus in them?
5 September 27, 2015: TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page Five JESUS on the ROAD Some of our Old St. Mary s parishioners, due to advancing age or chronic illness, are not able to join us at Sunday Mass. But they still can be with us in the Body of Christ when the Eucharist is brought to them in their home or nursing home. Old St. Mary s Parish is renewing and reorganizing its Ministry of the Eucharist to the Homebound. Do you know folks in our parish who would appreciate this ministry of sacrament and fellowship? Do you see yourself serving in this important ministry? Contact Fr. Bob Cary at rcary@oldstmarys.com or You can also leave your name and/or names of parishioners with the front desk. Let us join Jesus on the road to our homebound neighbors and friends. Thank You. To: Old St. Mary s Social Justice and Service Committee Dear Mary Anne and Parishioners of Old St. Mary s, Thank you for your continued support and generous donations of food and toiletries to St. James Food Pantry. Our work wouldn t be possible without the support we receive from you. Thank you. In the last fiscal year the pantry served 16,156 households, distributed 7,318 lunches to the homeless and made 1,451 deliveries to homebound seniors. Thank you for making it possible for us to care for the less fortunate. Gratefully, Peter Wawire Director of Social Care CLASS REUNION Visita on Grammar School Chicago Illinois Class of 1965 Reunion Saturday, November 14, 2015, 6 PM to 11:30 PM For informa on, please contact John Arve s at or chisox624@sbcglobal.net Pope Francis Speaks to Families Words of Joy and Life The Families of Children with Disabilities When it comes to the challenges of communication, families who have children with one or more disabilities have much to teach us. A motor, sensory, or other mental limitation can be a reason for closing in on ourselves, but it can also become, thanks to the love of parents, siblings, and friends, an incentive to openness, sharing, and ready communication with all. It can also help schools, parishes, and associations to become more welcoming and inclusive of everyone. Message for World Communications Day, January 23, 2015 Fiv_ Pill[rs of Isl[m The five pillars of Islam are the basis of Muslim life. Prophet Muhammed is reported to have said: Islam is founded on five pillars; to testify that there is no deity except God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God; to establish the ritual prayers; to give charity (to the needy); to perform the pilgrimage to the House (of worship in Makkah); and to fast during the month of Ramadan. We will look at what is entailed in each of the five pillars in the coming weeks. OSM Little Lambs Do you have little one s at home?
