1 OGRS International Opensource Geospatial Research Symposium 2009 Ecole Centrale Nantes France July , 2009 Call for papers
2 OGRS 2009: International Opensource Geospatial Research Symposium July , Nantes, France Software and tools in the geomatic field have strongly been growing for 20 years. They are pushed, at one side by the spreading of standards inside exchange platforms, and at the other side by territorial decision-makers having needs, especially towards sustainable development. Moreover, this situation has recently been reinforced thanks to the disposal of free and open source software for geoinformatics. In this context, from July 8th to 10th, 2009, during the tenth edition of Libre Software Meeting, IRTSV (Research Institute on Urban Sciences and Techniques) will organize a Research and Innovation Symposium about free and open source geospatial methods and technologies. The Main goals of this symposium are : to build a panel of new scientific works built on open source models or using open source tools ; to build and discuss a scientific framework about open source technology usage (benefits and limitations) ; to provide a platform to network and develop ideas for future collaborative works between the academic research world and the everyday operational world (companies, local authorities ). The symposium will integrate both : scientific conferences (research papers) ; companies and authorities testimonies (showcases) ; training sessions (labs). The scientific part will be driven by IRSTV and the operational part will be coordinated by Préfecture de Région and Région of Pays de La Loire on behalf of the GEOPAL program. OGRS 2009 Call for research papers Important dates : Full paper submission deadline : February, 20th 2009 Paper acceptance notification : April 20th, 2009 Final paper due : June, 1st, 2009 During the last 20 years, Free softwares (as defined by the Free Software Foundation) have undergone an impressive growth in every application domain of Computer Science (Office productivity tools, Databases, Operating Systems ). Among the most noticeable examples are Linux and the OpenOffice.org suite. Geographical Science and in particular Geographical Information Science has undergone the same process. History will most probably remember the first Desktop-GIS GRASS and its numerous scientific applications (landscape ecology, epidemiology, remote sensing, Urban planning, 3D representation). In the middle of the 90s, the University of Minnesota has given birth to MapServer, the first Open Source system dedicated to geographical information sharing. It has created a new dynamic in the GIS field. Never-ending issues about inter-operability and information sharing shifted from a conceptual point of view to an operational problem raising new challenged about standards (WMS, WFS, GML, WPS, GeoJSON), software architectures (spatial databases, geo-services, geo-applications, third-party applications). Following this, new open source projects appeared. An important part has been produced thanks to academics. For example, the Degree platform was initiated by the GIS Research Group of Department of Geography of University of Bonn. In the mean time desktop-gis and geo-processing frameworks have developed (TerraLIB, JGrass, Kalipso, SAGA, SEXTANTE,OrbisGIS). Most often, their raise was due to the closed-proprietary model that beyond the economic perspective does not allow neither modification of internal data models nor data query and representation languages to address new challenges of geographic information such as web 2.0 technologies used to share geographical contents in the SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure) context or to address new concerns in the field of sustainable development that imply more and more complex and integrated models. During the last few years, new communities including researchers, local authorities GIS administrators, companies and citizens have appeared. This evolution has given a new dynamic to geomatics. Those numerous open source projects raise new issues : To what extent are open source tools useful for academic research? What are the limitations of existing tools? Don t researchers re-invent the wheel of geomatic tools? What is the part of innovationtopics of Interest in those projects? 2/6
3 What are the new requirements or the new uses of tools that justify the use of open source solutions or drive to their development? What are the impacts of open source solutions on system architecture? Do open source solutions drive to redefine user interfaces, access and processing modes of geographic information? Topics of Interest : The symposium will provide a forum for original and recent research contributions covering conceptual modelling, spatial semantic language, spatio-temporal database, cartographic and virtual representation, image processing and features extrac- The International Program Committee would like to address the following overall topics but are not limited to : Cartography and advanced styling ; Cultural heritage ; Earth Observation ; From Webmapping to WebGIS ; Integrated risk and disaster management for society ; GIS and SDI interoperability (data, knowledge, language ) ; GIS and SDI for participatory learning and action ; GIS concept and theory (semantics and ontology) ; Landscape and ecology ; Spatial Analysis and Integration ; Spatial and Spatio-temporal data and analysis ; Sustainable Development and Governance ; Urban and Environmental Planning ; Visual Languages and Querying ; Web and desktop convergence in the geospatial field. A specific attention will be paid for applications dedicated to territories anthropized like cities. Abstract Submission Instructions for authors are on : Please follow registration instruction on our Web site : Language Authors are invited to communicate in English. Publication The best proceedings of the symposium will be published in the international scientific journal Springer «Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Cartography». Registration fee Registration is free, meals excluded (90 euros for 3 days with lunches, coffee or tea breaks, and gala dinner). 3/6
