1 nova-institut for Ecology and Innovation Renewable Resources and Electro-Mobility Market, Economy & Technology Communication
2 nova-institut The nova-institut GmbH was founded as a private and independent institute in It is located at the Chemiepark Knapsack in Huerth, which lies in the heartland of the chemical industry in Cologne. The work of the nova-institut focuses on the current and future supply of raw and finished materials to the industry. Renewable resources from agriculture and forestry will play an increasingly important role and will become the key components of a sustainable bio-based economy. Solar energy, wind energy and nuclear power cannot deliver raw materials, therefore mankind will be increasingly dependent on the material use of renewable resources. By means of intelligent resource management, shortages can be avoided in the next decades, despite increases in population. With projects and surveys, market analyses, industrial and political consulting, network management, publications and conferences, the nova-institut supervises and promotes a Raw Material Shift, moving away from fossil carbon carriers towards a sustainable raw material supply through renewable resources from field and forest. In the field of industrial biotechnology and biorefinery concepts it is, above all, a question of a reliable source of raw materials and the techno-economic evaluation of process chains as well as market analyses to find the most promising concepts and applications. In the case of bio-based materials projects will focus on the further techno-economic optimization of new applications, for market launch and to create suitable political framework conditions. Already almost 500,000 t of innovative bio-based plastics and composites are currently used in industry. Bioenergy, however, can utilize only a small proportion of solar radiation compared to solar and wind energy. The nova-institut sees the future of bioenergy particularly in the multiple use of main products and by-products for either energy or materials and in the cascading utilization, too, meaning several stages of material uses and final energy recovery, as well as the primary use of residual materials and by-products for energy. But with respect to all land uses, the focus in the future should be especially on resource efficiency and climate protection. In the field of mobility the nova-institut believes in electro-mobility, using renewable resources for energy production. Analyses show that in just a few years electric vehicles will be the best option for sustainable mobility.
