Experts agree: Offshore support vessels market First ship launching at Remontowa Shilbuilding S.A. in 2014 Wildebeest afloat! In March we launched the hull of the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) ferry designed and built for domestic trade (within one country) in the European Union. The ship is currently under construction at our shipyard for Danish Samsø municipality. At the same time it will be also the first ferry with such propulsion constructed for an owner from Denmark (more details on pages 7 12). The Danish Samsø municipality (Jutland Peninsula) authorities put a very strong emphasis on environmental protection. 100% of the island s electricity comes from wind power. In accordance with the municipality s generally accepted pro-environmental policy, the ordered ferry will also meet high ecological requirements. Up-to-date, our shipyard has already delivered a dozen or so modern ecological gas-powered ferries for Norwegian local ferry traffic. But this ship means a breakthrough as an example of a complex product offer of Remontowa Holding S.A. Many of the Holding s subsidiaries are involved in this project, since a lot of advanced on-board equipment and systems will be delivered by these companies. For the very first time the ship to be built in Poland will be equipped with cryogenic tank and complete LNG fuel system entirely designed, manufactured and delivered by Polish company, which will be of crucial significance to our domestic and European marine industry as well. This vessel is an advanced and technologically sophisticated prototype. But not only this one. We are also occupied with production of prototypes destined for the offshore oil and gas sector. In the last year we signed contracts for the construction of LNG fuelled platform supply vessels. We will build totally five completely equipped ships of this type for Norwegian owner. The construction of the first two units from this series has already begun. Meanwhile, we have also a modern state-of-the-art cable layer for Norwegian owner and one of five ice classed arctic container ships for Greenlandic shipping lanes under construction on our assembly plate. All this above means, that our production pattern has significantly changed. Instead of building of long series of ships, we ve had to switch over to prototypes. Driven by market demand we have jumped in at the deep end. But this is not the first time in our track record and there is nothing to be afraid of. We will manage, as always Grzegorz Landowski Editor-in-Chief 3 Wildebeest afloat! First ship launching at Remontowa Shilbuilding S.A. in Gemsbok ready to jump... Photo: Ireneusz Gradkowski Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A., operating within Remontowa Holding, has delivered the sixth platform supply vessel (PSV) in a series of eight for the American Owners Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO). All above mentioned parameters situate these vessels among the biggest and most technically sophisticated in their class. The vessel is being built under supervision of Classification Society American Bureau of Shipping according to the project elaborated by MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting Ltd from Gdynia / Poland. Noteworthy, cooperation of Remontowa with the US based Owners dates back to In the period three Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels were delivered to ECO. The Owner s comeback with more orders confirms quality and competitiveness of the ships built at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. The owner of the series of eight ships described above - Edison Chouest Offshore - supports the majority of the U.S. Gulf deepwater operations and an expanding global market with its fleet of highly specialized new generation offshore service and supply vessels. The growing demand worldwide for Chouest vessels is evidenced by recent deployments to South America, Africa and beyond. Founded as Edison Chouest Boat Rental in Galliano, Louisiana, in 1960, the Edison Chouest Offshore companies (ECO) are recognized today as the most diverse and dynamic marine transportation solution providers in the world. ECO operates a growing fleet of over 200 vessels of varied sizes and types, serving an expanding global base. Staying on the forefront of new technologies is an integral part of the Chouest business plan, as evidenced by recent advances in the areas of subsea support, integrated bridge systems and global communications. Remontowa is pleased to be the provider of modern and versatile ships for some of the most ambitious Owners, belonging to the premier league in the offshore market. The hull was slipped into the water partly covered by ice floes. Photo: Grzegorz Landowski The ship, named Gemsbok (newbuilding no. B 850/6), will be followed by another two vessels in the series. Gemsbok, itself, was delivered late January, while the ship s christening ceremony took place on 5th February In line with other ships from the series, this vessel was named after one of the species of African antelopes. Designed by Polish naval architects and marine engineers MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting Ltd, the ship is outfitted for the carriage of dangerous goods, and is able to operate as a fire-fighting vessel Class 1, or as an oil recovery vessel. All the vessels of the MMC 887 L design are devised to meet highest operation demands with the most cost efficient solutions. Owing to modern technical solutions applied, including full automation, the vessels are among the most versatile ones in their class. The vessels are equipped with advanced control systems and dynamic positioning (DP2 class). Godmother of the ship has been Sylwia Grzybowska, who named the ship and broke a traditional bottle of champagne on the hull. In March 2014, when we went to press, there were two platform supply vessels: Springbook 851/7 and Wildebeest 851/8 staying in Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A., due to the installation of some additional equipment onboard entrusted by the Owner to the shipyard, while Eland 851/5 and Gemsbok 851/6 after completion of those outfitting works and sea trails had already left the yard at the end of the same month. 6 ferries Wind farm off of Samsø. Photo: energiakademiet.dk The vessel is designed for year-round service in local car and passenger traffic between island (Samsø) and the mainland (Jutland), namely on the route Saelvig - Hou. The contract for the construction of the ferry was acquired a year ago. On March 18, 2013, representatives of the board of REMONTOWA Shipbuilding SA signed new contract for the construction of modern, double-ended, car and passenger ferry with gas-electric propulsion. This resulted from winning the tender, with a deadline set on the end of January 2013 and announced in September 2012 by Samsø Kommune, located in Denmark. Contenders included four European shipyards, including German Meyer Werft. The tender won by Remontowa was carried out in accordance with EU-tender procedure. Selection of REMONTOWA Shipbuilding to perform construction a new ferry for Samsø Kommune was based on strong track record of Gdansk based yard in the area of double-ended and LNG fuelled ferries. So far REMONTOWA Shipbuilding has built or has under construction not less than 10 LNG fuelled ferries which puts this yard on the premier position in this shipbuilding market sector in Europe and worldwide. Besides experience gained by REMONTOWA in construction similar gas powered ferries, another decisive factor in winning the tender is the high quality of offered vessels. A few years ago a Greek built ferry was delivered for operation on the Island s ferry connection. It caused a lot of problems and delays, but the mayor of Samsø Kommune is confident that ill-fated ferry history does not repeat itself this time. - It is a large and well-reputed company based in Gdansk, Poland. They have built many ships and have vast experience. There will be no problems with the new ferry - I dare to say even now, before the construction begins - said Jørn Nissen, at that time the mayor of Samsø Kommune to local Danish media around time of placing an order at Remontowa. The vessel with LOA: 99,95 m, has been designed by REMONTOWA Holding s in-house naval architects and marine engineers - Remontowa Marine Design and Consulting (RMDC), which supplied the detailed design and workshop drawings. There are also other companies operating within the Remontowa Holding capital group involved in the project. Hydroster Ltd. will supply complete ro-ro handling system with hoistable car decks, bow, stern and internal ramps enabling fast loading and unloading. The ship will be equipped with cryo tanks and LNG fuel system manufacture and delivered by FUO RU- MIA Ltd. Famos furniture factory will fit entirely all interior spaces, passenger lounges, mess and cabinets, while POLAM-REM will deliver light luminaires onboard the ship. The vessel, classed by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) is designed and built for operation under the Danish flag. The 600-passenger ferry, under construction for Samsø Municipality, which governs Samsø, Denmark s first renewable energy island, is scheduled to debut on 1 October 2014 and will operate between the island of Samsø and Jutland on the Danish mainland. The first steel cutting for the ship construction took place at the turn of summer and autumn The delivery is scheduled for September 15, By this date, the ferry berthing infrastructure in Hou will be also modified to fit the new ferry. Samsø authorities put strong emphasis on environmental protection. Almost 100 percent of island s electricity comes from wind power. In accordance with generally accepted pro-environmental policy, the ordered ferry will also meet high requirements related to environment friendliness. The ferry will be not only environmentally friendly, but also cheaper to operate due to its LNG fuel available at prices competitive to that of traditional marine diesel fuel. The contract value of the ship is understood to be slightly under DKK 200 million and its commercial life expectancy is at least 25 years. She will be able to take up to 160 cars and 600 passengers on board. The vessel, at 100 meter length and speed of 16 knots, will be one of the largest gas powered ferries built at REMONTOWA Shipbuilding so far. At the same time it will be first ferry with similar propulsion built at Remontowa for the Owner from Denmark and the first domestic ferry in Denmark to sail on LNG. The ship will be equipped with dual fuel engines that can operate on both marine diesel and environmentally friendly LNG (gas). Although during last five years REMONTOWA Shipbuilding has become the undisputed leader in building innovative gas-powered ferries for Northern Europe, the Yard hopes that Samsø ferry contract will pave the way for the expansion of REMONTOWA Shipbuilding SA presence also on the difficult and demanding Danish mark. 10 ISSUE 1(9) March 2014 magazine 11

7 ferries offshore A big step... A series of five modern platform supply vessels in the Remontowa Holding s orderbook from Siem Innovation bearing ships In July and December 2013 Siem Offshore Contractors placed orders for five dual fuelled Platform Supply Vessels to be built at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. The construction of the first units from the series has begun. REMONTOWA Shipbuilding News talks to Marcel Meijer, Mayor of Samsø Kommune (Samsø Municipality) What is the significance of this ferry, just launched, for your Municipality? - Well, it is very important for our Municipality, indeed. Until now our Island has had two ferry lines and one of them is operated by the State of Denmark, while the other one is driven by the local municipality and until 2014 we have always been outsourcing the ferry connection operation. We have tried to outsource the ferry line again, but the ferry market in Denmark is very much monopolised and the offered price we would have to pay to get it outsourced for another term, was four times as high as the amount of money we pay for the outsourcing now. We also have some troubles negotiating during the term of the term of the contract, which is five to six years, which makes the ferry line very inflexible for us. So we decided to take the ferry line in our own hands about a year ago, but we needed a ferry. And so we engaged with some of our specialists in Denmark - from OSK-ShipTech A/S to try and design ferry and have it built somewhere around the world but with a preference of northern part of Europe. And so, when the offers came in, Remontowa was by far the best shipyard to have it built in. So why did you choose Remontowa? - It was the balance of quality and price that made Remontowa the best offer for us, definitely. Another thing that is very important for us is that the ferry is using LNG as propulsion, in which Remontowa is widely experienced. From 2015 in the waters around Denmark there will be new restrictions on using marine diesel oil and emissions of SO x and NO x so either diesel oil would become a lot more expensive or we have find an alternative kind of propulsion. And, in that picture, you also have to bear in mind that, in 1998, the Island of Samsø won a competition by the Ministry of Environment in Denmark, where we became the Renewal Energy Island. Thus, now 95 percent of the heating comes from renewable energy and our electricity production, the power production comes from windmills and photo-voltanic panels, however for transportation it is hard to find alternatives, while of course transportation by ferry has to belong to renewal energy project and by using LNG we reduce CO 2 emissions, but it also gives us a possibility - in perhaps four or five years - to use our own bio-gas production for the ferries. So using biogas would be part of that project as well. Do you consider using bio-gas for this ferry? - It is technically possible. It has been done in Sweden. However problem for us might be that we have such a small scale bio-gas production, so we are not sure whether we can make it efficient enough... And the last important aspect for us is that as we live on an island and mobility in a modern society is becoming more and more important, this ferry gives us the possibility to raise the number of car units from 84 to 160 on the ferry connection and so increases the mobility for the locals, as well as it will be helpful for attracting tourists and for our local agricultural production logistics, so this ferry is a big step for the Islanders. The vessels will have dual fuel systems for operation either on LNG or Marine Diesel Oil. This new series of PSVs for Siem Offshore represents the latest technology within dual fuelled systems and hull design, to the benefit of lower fuel consumption, lower fuel cost, lower emissions and a better environment. The vessels will also be built to meet the most stringent requirements for operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and are also suited for operations in other geographical areas. The vessels shall have an overall length of 89 meters, a beam of 19 meters, a deck area of 980 sq m and will feature deadweight of 5,400 ton. The vessels are to be equipped with high power supply and to offer excellent station keeping and the highest redundancy capacity. In addition to typical class notations for PSVs, the vessels will be built with equipment and class notations for Fire Fighting (Fi-Fi II), Oil Spill Recovery 12 ISSUE 1(9) March 2014 magazine 13

8 offshore in Emergency Situations (Oilrec) and according to NOFO guidelines, Rescue and Standby Services to Offshore Installations (Standby Vessel) for up to 300 persons as well as Safe Hose Operation System (SHOS). The vessels will be built in accordance with Clean Design and Comfort Class criteria and will be prepared for a second fast rescue craft (FRC). All these vessels will be built to VS 4411 DF design from Wärtsilä, which will supply the design and integrated propulsion solutions for Remontowa built PSVs for Siem. The vessel has various Wärtsilä systems integrated into a total solution and an optimised hull design for lower fuel consumption, reduced fuel costs and fewer exhaust emissions. Wärtsilä will also supply the complete gas-electric system, the Wärtsilä LNGPac gas storage and handling system, and the complete electrical and automation system, including a four-split Wärtsilä LLC (Low Loss Concept) solution. The Wärtsilä LLC will enable the vessels to fulfil the highest possible Environmental Regularity Number (ERN) of The one vessel of similar design initially ordered at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. (with orders placed during 2013 the shipyard s no. B856/1) is under construction for delivery in Numerous hull sections for the vessel have already been manufactured. The ship is contracted long-term with AS Norske Shell. The further four units of VS 4411 DF design are scheduled for deliveries from third quarter 2015 to second quarter These ships are the first LNG powered platform supply vessels to be entirely built and equipped at Polish shipyard. It is also worth recalling that just another ship to be built at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. for Siem will be the most modern and complex vessel to be built by Polish yards so far. The vessel in question is an advanced dynamically positioned Cable Lay Vessel (CLV) scheduled for delivery in April The CLV will have an overall length of 95.3 meters, a breadth of 21.5 meters, a cable payload of 4,250 tons and an accommodation for 60 persons. On page 15: Bushbuck - one of the series of three AHTS vessels built for Edison Chouest Offshore Inc. According to many market analyses and forecasts - the global offshore support vessel market is expected to grow continuously owing to the need to satisfy rising offshore oil and gas logistics demand and in pace with progress in the offshore oil & gas industry, especially moving to deeper depths and offshore developments more distant from shores. The most lucrative and high-investment areas of offshore regions such as North Sea, U.S.-Gulf of Mexico, new discoveries and massive developments such as the ones in West Africa or offshore Brazil are the key driving factors behind the high growth of the offshore support vessel market. Increase in rigs count, and exploration rate create strong prospects for the future of the offshore support vessel market globally. Above: J. Hugh Roff Jr - one of the two AHTS vessels of the B 244 type built for Tidewater Marine LLC in On the right: PSV Highland Defender - along with Highland Guardian was delivered to Gulf Offshore NS Ltd. in According to survey Concise Analysis of the Offshore Support Vessel Market - Trends & Forecast To 2018 by Research and Markets, the market for offshore support vessels is expected to reach a value of USD 91.2 billion by 2018, at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 5.7 %. Anchor Handling, Towing and Supply Vessels (AHTS) and Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) lead the market and are expected to reach a value of USD 33.8 billion and USD 21.8 billion respectively by Also currently, in short term, offshore support vessels operators, including Clients of Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A., enjoy improved market conditions. According to RS Platou Markets, quoted by Trade Winds, offshore support vessel owners are emerging from a four-year trough with a recovery which is set to accelerate this year. Its prediction came as its analysts launched coverage of major US players such as Tidewater, Gulfmark and Hornbeck to expand on the six Oslo-quoted companies already on its radar. Platou analysts Turner Holm and Terje Mauer note, that rates for platform supply vessels (PSVs) were up 15% between the second and fourth quarters of 2013 and further recovery acceleration is expected in 2014 as cyclical and structural increases in service intensity more than offset fleet growth. - The offshore rig fleet will continue expanding; wells are growing deeper and fields moving farther from shore. All will positively drive OSV demand - explained Platou analysts inquired by Trade Winds. The North Sea market is still doing well, in spite of its maturity. Availability of capable tonnage will remain limited, propelling rates higher for the North Sea platform supply vessels and anchor-handlers according to Platou market researchers. Tidewater, the largest offshore support vessel owner, has recently received favourable ratings among Sea Valiant, along with Sea Victor was built for GulfMark, a couple of years ago. 16 ISSUE 1(9) March 2014 magazine 17

10 offshore US listed stocks by Platou on the grounds that the US based operator has increasingly modern fleet and is significantly exposed to the West Africa deepwater market. Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. has built ships which are operated by market leaders and are deployed in the markets enjoying high growth rate, benefitting Owners. In the period , Remontowa Shipbuilding delivered as many as 23 AHTS vessels to own, REMON- TOWA Holding in-house developed design. Great majority of these have been built for Tidewater, but some also for US Owner GulfMark Offshore (two units) and Italian Owner Marnavi (two units) and three more AHTS for Edison Chouest Offshore. In 2010 three AHTS vessels were delivered for Edison Chouest Offshore. Since 2012 two PSVs have been delivered to EMAS (Ezra Holdings), another three to Gulf- Mark and eight PSVs have been delivered or are nearing completion and delivery to Edison Chouest Offshore. Another sextet is on order / under construction for Siem Offshore. Remontowa Shipbuilding built PSVs and AHTS units have been mainly deployed offshore Brazil, West Africa and in the North Sea.
