Articulated Advanced Standing Credit for NSCC Programs Saint Mary s University will grant advanced standing credit for studies in selected programs offered by the Nova Scotia Community College. In particular, selected two-year diploma programs have been reviewed and the credit transfer policies for graduates are described below. Students who have completed other programs or have enrolled but not graduated from the programs below, may also receive credit, but evaluation is on a case by case basis. Articulated Advanced Standing Credit Graduates with an overall average of 70% in the following two-year diploma programs may receive between 30 and 60 credit hours toward a Bachelor degree at Saint Mary s University. The evaluation of credit hours is based upon the Academic Calendar for the Nova Scotia Community College. Students whose programs differ from this may not receive the same credit. Credit will not be automatically be recognized for courses completed more than ten (10) years prior to admission to Saint Mary s University. In diploma programs where students have electives, only certain electives are recognized for credit. Students must fulfill all of the requirements for their chosen degree and major as delineated in the Saint Mary s University Academic Calendar. In many cases, all of the credits hours (up to 60) recognized for advanced standing can be applied toward the Saint Mary s degree program. Students should be aware, however, that the applicability of the credits depends upon the student s chosen degree and major. In particular, students entering the Bachelor of Commerce program may find that not all advanced standing credit can be applied to their selected major. For the Business Administration programs, credit applicability to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science is limited. In general, for all of the below programs for which 30 credit hours are granted, students should find that all 30 hours can be applied to their degree and major (with the exception of Engineering). Details on credit granted for each diploma is described on the following pages. Students who require clarification should consult the Arts, Business or Science program advisor, as appropriate.

Business Administration Diploma Graduates of the Business Administration program at NSCC may receive up to 60 credit hours towards a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. The major with the greatest flexibility is the General Business Major. This major is intended for students who wish to design their own customized program of study. In most cases, all of the awarded transfer credits can be applied to this major. However, due to the requirements of other majors (accounting, marketing, management, etc.) all awarded transfer credits may not be applicable towards the degree (usually between 1-5 credits are not applicable, depending on the major.) 21 Course Sequencing for Selected Two Year Programs Block Credit into BA, BSci, BComm In accordance with the Articulation Agreement between The Nova Scotia Community College and Saint Mary s University, graduates of many NSCC Diplomas may receive 30 credit hours of advanced standing credit toward the requirements of the 120 credit hour Bachelor of Arts, Commerce or Science degree at Saint Mary s University. What follows is guidance on course sequencing after they transfer to Saint Mary s University for graduates of the following programs: American Sign Language/English Interpretation Radio & Television Arts (all specializations) Library and Information Technology Paralegal Services Early Childhood Education Human Services-Addictions Counselling Human Services-Child&Youth Human Services-Community Services Human Services-Correctional Services Human Services-Educational Support Human Services-Interdisciplinary Studies Human Services-Residential&Vocational Services Human Services-Therapeutic Support Recreational Leadership For each of the above programs, students receive 30 credit hours of block credit composed of,, and hours of Arts or Science credit and 6-9 hours of unspecified elective credit. In general, all 30 hours of credit can be applied to a B.A., B.Sc. or B.Comm. degree. 30 credit hours is the equivalent of one year of study. However, since all of the above programs are different from any majors offered at Saint Mary s University, students must carefully plan the sequence of their remaining 90 credit hours if they wish to graduate within three years of enrolling.

Suggested Course Selection and Sequencing for the B.A. Program The B.A. has a balance between breadth and depth of study. Breadth is met through the Basic Arts requirements. Depth is addressed both through both advanced study in a selected Major field as well as advanced study in Arts electives. The B.A. is a very flexible degree in which most requirements being satisfied in multiple ways. The split of credit hours among the various components is approximately as follows: Basic Arts Major Additional Arts courses at 2 nd year level and above s 30 credit hours credit hours 30 credit hours credit hours The details vary across majors but in all instances students must have at least 66 credit hours of Arts credits at the 2 nd year (2000 level) or above. Planning of Year 2 (1 st year at Saint Mary s after transfer) is very dependent upon which specific advanced credits were awarded. Within years 1 and 2 of the B.A. students should have completed the following 60 credit hours: (3 credit hours) (3 credit hours) (3 credit hours) (HUMA, CLAS, ENGL, HIST, PHIL, RELS) (SSCI, ANTH, ECON, GEOG, LING, POLS, PSYC, SOCI) Major Arts at the 2000 level consult an advisor for advice on selection In years 3 and 4 of the B.A. students will normally complete 3 in the major at the 2000 level and above and 24 credit hours in Arts subjects at the 2000 level and above. The specific courses for the major are described in the Academic Calendar. Recommendations for Years 2, 3 and 4 courses for each NSCC diploma program are given in the main document.

Suggested Course Selection and Sequencing for the B.Sc. Program In general there are no courses taught within the above NSCC diplomas that have exact equivalents in Science. However, the B.Sc. has many elective requirements that can be satisfied by diploma credits. The requirements of the B.Sc. are as follows: 3 credit hours in in MATH or CSCI numbered 1210 or above in Arts subjects in Science, but not in the major subject At least 42 credit hours in the major subject Up to 3 of electives such that total credit hours equal 120. Treating the advanced standing from NSCC as Year 1 of the B.Sc., then Years 2, 3 and 4 would typically look as follows: in MATH or CSCI numbered 1210 or above in Science of electives in the major subject in Science, but not in the major subject of electives 18 or more credit hours in the major subject, as required of electives (or less if the major requires more than 18) In most instances the electives are unrestricted but students should ensure that if they did not receive at least of advanced standing in Arts subjects that they allocate sufficient electives to make up the difference. Note that students would still be expected to have met the normal admission requirements to the B.Sc., namely a minimum grade of 60% in the following Grade 12 courses: Pre-Calculus 3 Sciences 1 other academic subject

Suggested Course Selection and Sequencing for the B.Comm. Program If students are transferring to the B.Comm. program from diploma programs other than Business Administration (such as the ones listed at the start of this document), then they will usually receive 30 credit hours that can be applied to the B.Comm. Treating these credits as Year 1, then Years 2, 3 and 4 of the B.Comm. might look as follows: Fall Winter ECON 1201 MGSC 1206 ECON 1202 ACCT 2241 MGMT 1281 MGMT 2383 MGSC 1205 MGMT 2384 CISY 1225 MKTG 2270 Fall Winter ACCT 2242 MGMT 3480 COMM 2293 FINA 2360 MGSC 2207 ECON elective Fall Winter CMLW 2201 MGMT 4489 FINA 3361 Non-Business elective Non-Business elective Major/Non-Business Major/Elective Major requirements vary among majors which may cause differences in sequencing from the above (particularly for Accounting or Finance). Further, the number and mix of electives varies among majors. Consult the Academic Calendar and the Business Program Advisor for assistance.
