Rationale For Performing This Detox Your body is constantly being challenged by many toxic exposures. The exposures never end. You are exposed to toxins through the foods you eat, the air you breathe, the drugs you take, the exposures to your skin and from the many chemical reactions occurring within your body each day. Exposure to these toxins can actually cause or contribute greatly to many of the symptoms you may be experiencing. An important fact to note when considering the effects these toxins have on your symptoms is that you have a unique chemistry. You may have a detox system that is able to handle large amounts of one type of toxin while experiencing few symptoms or ill effects. Or, your detox system may be affected by even small levels of other toxins. Another person in your household, because of their unique make-up, may not show any outward symptoms to the exact same toxic exposure that wreaks havoc on your health. The concerning part is that symptoms can seem to appear out of nowhere. You feel fine one day and then all of a sudden symptoms come out of the blue. And, sometimes the symptoms can be life threatening! A few common toxicity symptoms are listed below. Cancer General Fatigue Chronic Fatigue Fibromyalgia Autoimmune Dz. ADHD Autism Swelling Muscle Pain Joint Pain Migraines Numbness Foggy Thinking Dementia Memory Problems Depression Allergies Sinusitis Chronic Cough Skin Problems Thyroid Problems Ear Ringing Thinning Hair Drug Sensitivities Liver Problems Diabetes I & II Parkinson s Disease Before we continue, I want to make sure I clarify the concept of systemic detoxification. The reason I need to address this topic is due to the vast number of so-called detoxification products and protocols you can buy nowadays. DO NOT let anyone fool you. You CAN NEVER detoxify your body completely. Anyone making this claim is either grossly misinformed or is not being forthright. Do Page 1

not put your trust in fools or in those trying to enlarge their own bank accounts at your expense. Too many products and gimmick protocols claim to rid your body of deadly toxins. I am here to be straight-forward and factual with you. The best you can do is to lower your systemic toxic load and improve the efficiency with which your body gets rid of toxins. This protocol accomplishes these goals by influencing the pathways of detoxification. Toxic exposure is kind of like a wild card when we address the factors that are possibly affecting your health. I cannot guarantee that some toxic exposure is causing or aggravating your current unhealthy condition. What I can guarantee is that you and everyone you know have been exposed to toxins to some degree. I give you information on how to get tested for your toxic exposures on page 4. Ignoring toxic exposures leaves a potential gaping hole in treating the causative factors of any symptoms you may be experiencing. I have personally witnessed many miraculous and many times unexpected changes in patient s symptoms after they perform this detox protocol. How Your Body Completes Detoxification Detoxification is a complex and multi-factorial system. The vast majority of complex detoxification reactions occur within your liver. I am not going to describe this complex system in detail because by the time I finished detailing phase 1 cytochrome P-450 enzymatic reactions, phase 2 conjugation reactions, and the multiple elimination pathways, you would certainly use this protocol as tinder for a campfire (or worse). It is not important for you to understand the exact chemical reactions occurring during detox. What is important is that you understand that the liver changes toxins into substances you can eliminate from your body. What is important for you to know is that you can support and enhance the body s ability to perform detoxification reactions. So, I am going to illustrate an overview of a toxin s journey through your body in order to give you a picture in your mind of what will be occurring within your body as you perform this protocol. Once a toxin enters your body it has to be evicted because it has the potential to cause the disruption of important cellular functions Page 2

which will eventually lead to damage. Most toxins are found in a form that cannot be excreted from the body as is. The body, mostly through the liver, thus begins the task of changing and getting rid of the toxin. This process is referred to as detoxification. The chemical reactions the liver uses to address this toxin rely heavily on vitamins, minerals and other substances you get from the foods you eat. With no surprise many of these constituents come from vegetables and fruits. It is an interesting aside to note that population studies consistently show that people who eat larger quantities of fruits and vegetables experience lower occurrences of just about every disease. I believe that one of the reasons for these observations has to do with the fact that these foods supply the needed constituents for detoxification. When the toxin enters the liver, a number of things can occur. The best case scenario is that the toxin runs through the needed chemical reactions and is excreted from the body. There are other less desirable scenarios, however. It is possible that you can get exposed to a large amount of a certain toxin accidentally or even due to constant work or home environmental exposures. The shear volume of the toxic exposure may be too much for the liver to process. The other very real possibility is that your system of detoxification may become depleted of needed nutrients over time due to multiple exposures (pain killing drugs for example) or poor diet. In either case the body will be unable to properly detoxify the damaging toxin and the cells of the body will become exposed. Unfortunately, many of these substances have neurotoxicity and can damage brain, spinal cord or nerve cells. The body moves to protect itself from this exposure by sequestering the toxin within fat cells. Think of it as toxin jail. Thus, the body s over-all toxic load has increased and this toxin will re-enter your system at some point down the road to possibly cause mischief somewhere in your body. To illustrate this potentially deadly effect let me use the example of Agent Orange and the Vietnam war. Soldiers who were exposed to Agent Orange have been found to have increased risk for a number Page 3

of ailments including cancer. When did they get these diseases? Was it a week after exposure a month after exposure? No, they developed these diseases many years or decades later. Ask yourself how an exposure to a toxin 15 years earlier caused cancer so long after the event. The answer is that these people were exposed to a level of toxin that the body simply could not process. This toxin was put in toxin jail within fat cells. As these fat cells released their contents during the person s life they also released the toxin. At some point their body was unable to repair the damage done by these toxins and their cells mutated. The end result was a deadly disease called cancer. What is your toxic load? My guess is that it is pretty high since we live in the land that has had the motto of better life through chemistry for over 50 years. It is time for you to lower your toxic load starting today! Page 4 Testing Your Toxin Levels There are close to 3,500 chemicals registered for use in human products. Only a handful have been tested for safety, but a growing number of them are being questioned as to their ill-effects on human health. The following is a partial list of the body systems impacted by these chemicals: Immune System: Auto-immune diseases, viral infections, allergies cancer, chronic infections, immune disruption, chronic cough, asthma Nervous System: Alzheimer s, Parkinson s disease, memory decline, foggy thinking, ADD/ADHD, Autism, headaches, numbness, pain, paresthesias, tremors Endocrine System: Thyroid problems (including anti-thyroid antibodies), adrenal problems, sleep disruption, male/female infertility, diabetes, depression, fatigue, anxiety, weight loss resistance Cardiovascular System: Heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke, blood pressure problems, muscle weakness, muscle spasms, shortness of breath

You can now be tested for some of the most potentially damaging of these chemicals including phthalates, parabens, PCB s (Polychlorinated Biphenyls), chlorinated pesticides, organophosphates, Bisphenol A (BPA), and volatile solvents (benzene, styrene, toluene, xylene, hexane). Below are short descriptions for these chemical disrupters. Phthalates, known as plasticizers, make plastics more flexible. This chemical is used in many products including bottled water, bottled anything, cosmetics, shampoos, fragrances, adhesives, food packaging, cleaning products, and many more. Phthalates may cause cancer, diabetes, and may be a major player in children behavior problems as kids can begin to be exposed from mother s milk. Any mother-to-be should be tested ASAP. Parabens are widely used as preservatives in cosmetics. They have estrogenic activity and they poison the energy producers of the cell. They may play a role in male infertility and may cause breast cancer. Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make hard plastics and epoxy resins. It is found canned foods, plastic beverage bottles, and many other products. About 6 billion pounds are produced annually. Current levels of exposure have been shown to affect the brain (children, adults), it is an endocrine disrupter (diabetes, infertility, early puberty), can cause cancer, and many other bad health effects. Volatile Solvents (benzene, styrene, toluene, xylene, hexane, etc.) are found in gasoline, plastics, styrofoam cups, paints, varnishes, photocopiers, paint thinners, fingernail polish, adhesives, soy foods, rubbers, jet fuel, cleaning solutions. If you have ever smelled any of these things you were exposed to volatile solvents. They cause mostly neurological problems including headaches, numbness, memory problems, mood changes, depression, dizziness, fatigue, sleep disruption, and muscle weakness. Organophosphates/PCB s/chlorinated Pesticides are found in our vegetables, fruits, milk products, breast milk, fish, beef, and many other food sources. They are unbelievably dangerous and have been linked to many diseases including cancer, diabetes, and poor neurological development in children. Page 5

The following are a list of the testing you can have done and the price for each test. Contact the clinic if you are interested in getting any of these tests done. If funds permit, consider doing one of the combo tests as you get the biggest bang for your buck with these tests. If you happen to test high in any of these chemicals you can use the less expensive individual tests in your follow-up testing. 9 Important Warning! In theory this detox protocol could affect the metabolism of prescription drugs. You should never stop taking any prescription drug without consulting with your medical doctor. I strongly suggest that you communicate with your doctor regarding this protocol if you are taking prescription drugs. You may need to monitor your blood pressure, blood clotting factors, or blood sugar while performing this detox. Realistically, your medical doctor may know nothing about detoxification and will not be qualified to evaluate this protocol. What they can do, however, is express any concerns they may have with your specific prescriptions. me with any questions or concerns you may have regarding the potential interactions of this protocol with your prescriptions. Page 7

What You Should Expect To Experience It is impossible to predict what reaction you may get from performing this detoxification protocol. The most common symptom is a slight increase in fatigue for a few days to a week. Keep in mind that this is a very potent detoxification protocol and thus, symptoms can sometimes be intense. If you should experience any of the symptoms listed in the below chart to an intense degree, try the suggestions under the Action To Take section. Also, contact me immediately and stop the protocol until you hear from me if you happen to experience severe symptoms that cause you concern. With all of that said, know that most people do not experience any severe symptoms from this protocol. A list of Common Symptoms are listed below: Symptom Frequency Action To Take Mild/Moderate Fatigue Headaches Mild Nausea Page 8 Very Very Common Can last days or a week. Cut the dose of the Dr. Z s Detox/Immune Fuel in half for 2-3 days. Usually lasts 2-3 days. Sometimes they can be intense. Try ice packs to the back of the neck/head. Try your best not to take drugs. Usually goes away after 2-3 days. Try taking your supplements with a meal. Loose Stools Common Usually only lasts for 2-3 days. Foggy Thinking Muscle/Joint Pain Mood Swings/ Depression Sinus Congestion Skin Rash Common Common Sometimes Sometimes Sometimes Can last throughout detox period. Dr. Z if it persists. Please me if you experience any symptoms of concern that are not listed on this page.

What You Get In Your Package You have a number of options to choose from when you order the Internal Detoxification protocol. You can order either the one or two person Internal Detoxification Package. There is a savings when you purchase the two person detox package. Additionally, those who just cannot get themselves to down a mixed powdered drink have the option of getting Dr. Zimmer s Dark Phyto-Green supplement in capsular form. The dose of dark green vegetables and fruits you get in capsular form will be slightly lower than if you get the powdered form (but still effective and therapeutic). This protocol has been formulated to address the many complex factors involved in detoxification. The protocol provides you with an effective and meaningful support of your body s detox process. You can certainly buy other so-called detox programs at a lower cost. You risk getting little to no health benefit for your investment and you will not receive the support you will get when you follow a ZimmerNutrition.com detox protocol. Your package will contain a copy of this Detoxification Booklet. The directions you will follow to perform this detox protocol are the same whether you have the one or two person detox. The only difference will be in the dosing of the powdered Dark Phyto-Green supplement vs. if you get the protocol in the capsular form. Proper dosing information is found at the end of each product description. One Person Detoxification Package Contains: 1 container of Dr. Z s Dark Phyto-Greens (240 gram powder) or 1 bottle of Dr. Z s Dark Phyto-Greens (180 capsules) 1 bottle of Dr. Z s Detox/Immune Fuel (120 capsules) 1 bottle of Dr. Z s Detox PhytoNutrients (120 capsules) Page 9

Two Person Detoxification Package Contains: 2 containers of Dr. Z s Dark Phyto-Greens (240 gram powder) or 2 bottles of Dr. Z s Dark Phyto-Greens (180 capsules) 1 bottle of Dr. Z s Detox/Immune Fuel (240 capsules) 2 bottle of Dr. Z s Detox PhytoNutrients (120 capsules) Internal Detoxification Supplement Detail The following descriptions will give you specific detail about each supplement you will take during this detox. It is important for you to understand why you are taking each supplement and what effect each supplement will have on your system. Dr. Zimmer s Detox/Immune Fuel Formula This formula contains a unique blend of foundational vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which are important to the detoxification process. This product is formulated to flood your system with the nutrients needed to help your liver create the energy needed to fuel detoxification. Additionally, it provides the constituents actually utilized by your body to bind and dispose of toxins. Since the detoxification process can produce numerous and dangerous free radicals (oxidants), the Detox/Immune Fuel Formula contains some of the most potent and protective antioxidants. On top of stimulating detoxification, independent studies reveal that this formula can actually strengthen your immune system making it a perfect product to use to improve your over-all health status. Bottom Line: Provides fuel and cellular protection during detoxification. Dosages: 4 capsule, 2 times a day Page 10

Dr. Zimmer s Dark Phyto-Greens Formula Dark colored fruits and vegetables contain many of the important constituents used in the detoxification process. There is little doubt in my mind that the benefits imparted by these constituents are the reason why studies consistently show that diets high in the consumption of these dark colored plants reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and brain diseases. This formula contains organically grown materials and contains high levels of grass juice extracts. The list of fruits and vegetables includes apple, strawberry, kiwi, raspberry, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, acacia, spirulina, wheat grass (gluten-free), broccoli, broccoli sprout, tomato, carrot, spinach, kale, Brussels sprout, and onion. Bottom Line: Provides high dose of dark colored vegetables and fruits which are utilized in the process of detoxification. Dosages: 1 scoop, 2 times a day or 6 capsules, 2 times a day Page 11

Dr. Zimmer s Detox PhytoNutrients Formula This specialized formula is meant to support detoxification on multiple levels. It contains herbs (artichoke, garlic, dandelion, turmeric, beet leaf, radish root, yellow dock root) and nutrients (choline, L-methionine, inositol) known to support the different phases of the liver detoxification process. Other herbs (silymarin/milk thistle) support numerous liver functions thereby creating an environment within the cell which promotes a more efficient and effective detox process. Bottom Line: Stimulates detoxification, protects liver cells, promotes good liver cell function and supports the elimination of toxins. Dosages: 4 capsule, 2 times a day Easy-To-Follow Directions I realize that our lives are very busy and I have designed this protocol to fit into even the busiest of schedules. Below you will find the directions on when to take each supplement. Follow the dosing directions unless you are directed to change via correspondence with Dr. Zimmer. 15 What Can I Eat? What Should I Avoid? Your goal during this internal detox is to greatly decrease or eliminate any unnatural exposure to your body. This means eating pesticide-free fruits and vegetables and meats that are hormone and antibiotic free. This includes keeping all artificial chemicals out of your air and off of your body. You want to increase your ability to detox while greatly decreasing your toxic exposure. You WILL NOT be on a calorie restricted diet. Fasting is not a good way to detox. The reason is that the process of detoxification is very energy dependent. Fasting takes away fuel from your body and burdens the detox system. Also, many of the factors used by the detox system need the substances found in the foods you eat. Eat until you are full, but do not over-eat. Here are some simple rules you should follow: 1. Foods found in the next section that are BOLDED help with detoxification. Incorporate as many into your diet as you can. 2. Try to not skip meals. 3. Make sure you eat fresh fruits and vegetables. It is best to eat these foods in their raw state or very lightly steamed. The best choices are Organic. If not, make sure you wash them well. 4. Eat meats that are certified hormone and antibiotic free. Many common grocery stores now carry these meats. 5. Do not eat any processed foods during this detox. This includes any processed meats. A good rule to go by is if God did not make it, do not eat it. 6. An exception to rule 5 are breads and pastas that contain no preservatives. Whole grain are preferred. 7. Of course, DO NOT drink soda pop or drink ANY alcohol. 8. You cannot drink Caffeine during the detox. Sorry! Beware because most decaffeinating processes use chemicals to accomplish the final product. You can only drink naturally decaf drinks. Natural decaf Green Tea is great. All other types of herbal teas are great. Page 13

9. Drink lots of glass bottled or purified water. Many of the plastic bottles contain high levels of Phthalates, which are used to make them soft. 10. Dairy products are notorious for being high in pesticides. Make sure dairy products are organic. 11. Do your best to not take over-the-counter drugs if possible unless otherwise directed by your doctor. 12. Do not grill your foods where the flame contacts the food. Grilling creates aromatic hydrocarbons that need to be detoxified by your system. 13. Do not burn candles, use air fresheners, or apply anything to your body that contains chemicals. 14. Do not start any new exercise programs during this detox. If you are currently working out, do not increase the intensity of your program. Exercise takes up energy and increases your body s need for antioxidant. Finally, use common sense. READ LABELS! If you cannot say the word it is probably a chemical. Contact me via if you have any questions not addressed in the above points. Go to the Frequently Asked Questions Section for more details and direction. Page 14

Frequently Asked Questions (Q): There are so many detox products to choose from. How does your detox protocol differ from the majority of others? (A): First, I can tell you with great confidence that the majority of protocols care about selling product first. They use sensationalized testimonials and claims in order to sucker you into opening your wallet. My detox protocols are based on good scientific evidence, clinical common sense and actual experience with real patients. You will find no sensationalized claims or sales job. Instead you find clearly described rationales and the setting of realistic expectations. More importantly, though, the products I use are formulated with scientifically studied levels of active ingredients. Other protocols give you similar nutrients but at far lower quality and ineffective dosages. (Q): How long will I have to detox? (A): It depends on your goals and symptoms. The minimum is two weeks. If you have mild/moderate toxicity symptoms then I suggest four weeks. If you have a severe condition, you should consider doing parts of this protocol for eight weeks the first time. A lot depends on your reaction to the detox. I have seen significant changes in people with severe symptoms in as early as two weeks. So, if you have a quick reaction then you will probably do four weeks and, if not, you may have to do eight. Two weeks is usually enough for general preventative health. (Q): Will I feel ill during the detox? (A): This is a hard one to answer because some people have little reaction and some feel almost flu-like. The latter is rare, but it does happen. The most common reaction is increased fatigue and headaches for the first week. Rarely will you have to alter your day because of detox reactions. Look at the What You Should Expect To Experience section found in this manual for information on how to proceed with the detox if you become ill. Page 16

(Q): How often should I perform an internal detoxification protocol? (A): For general preventative health I suggest detoxing every six months. I perform a detox in January and July. If you are having mild symptoms you may need to repeat the detox every four months for the first year. Those with more severe symptoms may be advised to continue the detox in some fashion for an extended number of months. I will give those experiencing severe symptoms guidance on an individual basis. (Q): What benefits should I expect from this detox? (A): The most commonly perceived benefit is an increase in energy. Keep in mind that the main goal of detoxification is to better equip your body to rid itself of toxins. There is no perceived benefit from this, specifically. However, symptoms reduction is very common across the board. Other than a reduction in fatigue, the most commonly reported benefits are decreased whole body pain, decreased swelling (especially in joints), headache resolution, clearer thinking, and generally increased well being. (Q): Should I do both a Digestive Healing Cleanse and an Internal Detox? (A): If you have digestive symptoms then it is a good idea to do a digestive cleanse first followed by a internal detox. If digestion is not a major factor choose the internal detox over the digestive cleanse. Keep in mind that you can perform an internal detox and buy a few of the digestive supplements to target some of your digestive problems. (Q): Should children detox? (A): Let me answer this with a couple of questions. Are children exposed to the same everyday toxins found in our lives? The answer is YES they are. Do children eat good amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables which promote natural detoxification? The answer is NO they do not. So, I do think it is a good idea to have children detox. I would suggest starting when they are old enough to swallow pills. Please contact me if you would like guidelines and dosages. Page 17

(Q): Where do Dr. Zimmer s supplements come from? (A): Our Dr. Zimmer brand supplements are made for us by either OrthoMolecular Products or by Metagenics. (Q): If I Dr. Zimmer how long will it be before I get a reply? (A): If you and I have consulted on your condition, please use the special found on the last page of this booklet to contact me should you experience any significant or troubling symptoms. I answer these s before any others each morning. So, any wait time for a response will be short. If you are following this protocol by yourself you can still me at drz@zimmernutrition.com. My response time will depend upon my volume of s, my patient consult/treatment load, and my schedule. (Q): Can I buy the supplements found in these protocols separately? (A): Yes, you can. It may be important for you to continue on with a few of the supplements found in the protocol depending on your condition. You can order these through our online store at www. ZimmerNutrition.com. (Q): Which toxicity test do you think is the best to order? (A): If you are an expectant mother I strongly suggest you get the BPA, Phthalates, Parabens Combo profile completed. If you are having significant neurological, fatigue, or weird symptoms you should consider doing as many as you can afford. If money is a limiting factor, start with the Volatile Solvents profile as it may show a chronic and continuing exposure in your environment. (Q): Where can I go to learn more about pesticides in my food and about chemical exposures in other products I use? (A): Go to: This is an unbelievably helpful site. Go to the Health/Toxics link and then explore the links found on the right side of the page; especially Skin Deep: Cosmetic Safety; Sunscreen safety; and Shopper s Guide to Pesticides in Produce. Page 18

Dr. Zimmer s Final Thoughts The ultimate goal of performing this detox protocol is improved health. This protocol is the most thorough and most comprehensive that you will find anywhere. It makes little sense to me to undergo an internal detoxification protocol with cheaper products that simple cannot work! Thus, the protocol that you have invested in will have a powerful effect on your detox system. You have to understand that reaching your goal of better health can take some time, depending on your condition. It is impossible to change your detoxification system around overnight. Suggesting that you can is unethical and misleading. This protocol, however, will initiate change in your system. You may have to continue on some part of this protocol if you are experiencing significant symptoms. Your mind-set should be that this protocol is the beginning of your journey to become a healthy and vibrant person. Make sure you contact me for further suggestions and direction as you come to the end of your two-week protocol. Finally, I want to emphasis to you that it is impossible for me to predict what experience you are going to have from this protocol. If you think that you are having significant reactions and have any concern: STOP the protocol until we can communicate. Good luck and I wish you the best in health. God Bless, Dr. Edward Zimmer Page 19
