3 1 REVIEW BY THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT A business studies program has three main missions at Åbo Akademi University. Firstly, the core mission is to provide a learning environment for business students at bachelor and master levels that give a solid basis for future career opportunities in an international job market. Secondly, business studies have become increasingly research oriented. Our department has been able to provide more qualified supervision for a growing number of doctoral students and improved research funding and opportunities. The staffs at the department are also initiating broader research projects that both make use of the interdisciplinary university context and work in international networks. Thirdly, the interaction with the business community needs to be strong. Both the business studies program and the research we are conducting need to be interrelated and especially relevant for our constituencies. Additionally, our department has a special role and is increasingly recognized in the home university context. Business studies are an element in many study programs at other faculties at Åbo Akademi University. The university board decided 2004 to place the interdisciplinary Amos Anderson chair of philosophy, culture and management at the Business Studies department. The position was filled in Professor Bengt Kristensson Uggla has the ideal background for the prestigious chair. Bengt defended his doctoral thesis Kommunikation på bristingsgränsen (Communication at the Bursting Point) at Lund University 1994 exploring the communicative resources in Paul Ricoeur s philosophical project. He was appointed associate professor (Docent) in Studies in Faith and Ideology at Uppsala University Bengt has conducted doctoral studies in France (Paris) and Germany (Tübingen), and he has been visiting professor at North Park University, Chicago (1994), visiting scholar at State University of New York at Stony Brook (1998) and Stanford Centre for Innovations in Learning at Stanford University (2004). Professor Kristensson Uggla s main research interests are in hermeneutics, Paul Ricoeur, communication theory, globalization, learning in different institutional contexts, knowledge management, arts management, social and political philosophy. He is an experienced director and lecturer in executive educational programmes. In addition to research and educational activities, Kristensson Uggla has been acting as Head of Department of Social and Culture Studies in Education at Stockholm Institute of Education ( ) and Dean at Swedish Institute of Management, IFL ( ). His latest major work is Slaget om verkligheten: filosofi, omvärldsanalys, tolkning (The Struggle for the Real) and his current transdisciplinary research project is titled Globalization, Lifelong Learning & the Hermeneutics of Knowledge Management. Professor Kristensson Uggla is the ideal person to broaden the competence of the Business Studies in the university context was a year of study and administrative reforms at Finnish universities. The Bologna system of undergraduate studies (2+3 years) was implemented at the university in the fall semester At the same time the public sector in Finland has gradually implemented performance-based pay. The department went through a strenuous year of reforms that seem to continue in

4 The research profile of the department has become stronger with a more diversified faculty. Besides individual research efforts, the department has been participating in national research networks, such as the ValueNet in the Liike program financed by the Academy of Finland. The department has regular research seminar series and our approximately thirty doctoral students present their research twice a year at internal workshops. In 2005 a workshop was held at Sydväst Polytechnic in Ekenäs. Doctoral students participate actively in the Finnish doctoral program KATAJA. We are also an institutional member in the international research network EIASM and the Nordic network NFF. We have also been able to keep-up the relation to our alumni Ekonomföreningen Merkur. The third Merkur lecture in business took place in September. The seminar at Arken on Family Business and Entrepreneurship was well attended and supported by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Departmental vision is to involve former students more closely with the core activities through advisory boards for the main subjects. An advisory board for Business studies (Handelshögskolans näringslivsråd r.f.) was founded with professor emeritus Caj-Gunnar Lindström as chairman. I am pleased to say that the department and the business studies program is able to continuously attract a large and qualified number of students and that the output of BSc and MSc (Econ & Bus) is continuously high. The department also has an active high number of doctoral candidates. The research highlights during the year was the defence of four doctoral dissertations. Birgitta Forsström and Maria Elo in international marketing, Benita Gullkvist in Accounting and Joachim Ramström in organization and management defended successfully their dissertations in the spring. Åbo Akademi University was ranked as the most productive university in Finland. I am sure; the Business studies department has made a significant contribution to the overall ranking.
