3 P anniversary P and 1 SOME INITIAL WORDS FROM THE PROFESSOR BUSINESS AS USUAL... th The beginning of this year started in a mood of excitement and planning for the 80P P anniversary of Handelshögskolan vid Åbo Akademi. On October education in business studies started at Åbo Akademi. It was with a fair dollop of respect that one went to work. Nevertheless, at least during the spring it was business as usual ; the normal mundane teaching as usual, examinations as usual, doctoral dissertations as usual, and publications a bit more than usual. Great as usual! The first Entreprenörsakademin a joint initiative with the Center for Continuous Education that had started the previous year continued and was completed. Plans for future Entrepreneörsakademi modules, one in Ostrobothnia and one on the Åland Islands started. Nurope continued with their activities in Europe. Everything seemed very good when we left for the summer. Apparently too good. In August the now infamous Neilimo-report was published and we all knew nothing would be as usual for a while. Or, then it was the usual all over again. The Neilimo-report had been evaluating business education in Finland. Their conclusion was that big units, preferably in close proximity with universities should be the units of the future. Small independent business schools were not desirable. Units with strong examination and strong publication should, of course, be further strengthened. The report presented data, which indisputably showed that Åbo Akademi Business Studies was among the top in the nation, no matter by which criteria one measured. Therefore, it was quite stunning to stumble on the conclusions, which recommended that our unit was to terminate activities. Most researchers learn quite early on that presenting data and drawing conclusions, which the data does not support is a recipe for desk reject of any research. If it is not rule number one, it is certainly among the top 5 in Research Handbook for Dummies. So, rather than returning from summer with conferences and some vacation to take a fresh bite at all those lovely research ideas that had emerged we were welcomed quite violently to fall. We were the Les Miserables once again forced to climb on the barricades. This was 1993 revisited a déjà vu in every respect. The entire fall went to re-presenting (with the hyphen!) the data over and over again. And, every time we re-presented, no matter how we measured the result was the same. We were among the top. Those who re-read (with the hyphen) our re-presentations doubted their re-readings and our content analysis. But, in the midst of this fight on the barricades, there was an upside (as there always is). th Our 80P held on October attracted enormous attention. More than 200 th persons participated in our seminar on the 12P 185 participated in the gala dinner. The theme of the seminar was When the Map Changes. This theme was chosen in the early spring sun of March. Although we had anticipated a slightly different content of the seminar, it turned out to be spot on. 3

4 As 2007 is ending we are still on the barricades. But, we will prevail. We know a university needs a business school and a business school needs a university. Malin Brännback Professor 4

5 TP TP PT School PT Assistants 2 INTRODUCTION Åbo Akademi School of Business is part of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at Åbo Akademi University in Turku. Its history dates back to 1927, when 1 first students began studying at Handelshögskolan vid Åbo AkademiTPF FPT. The old name, even though not officially used anymore, is still to be seen above the main entrance of the department s building, located in Henriksgatan 7. The building is hence generally known as Hanken, which is a common nickname for Handelshögskolan. As the abbreviation for Handelshögskolan is HH, and ÅA for Åbo Akademi, the school will be referred to as HHÅA in the text. In addition, HHÅA students interested in research have the possibility to obtain Licentiate and Doctoral degrees. The faculty at HHÅA consists of six professors, one study rector, two senior 2 lecturers, three lecturers, and three assistantstpf FPT. In addition, there are two university teachers who mainly teach in courses for students from other faculties, and in collaboration with ÅA s Open University, the Åland Polytechnic, and Sydväst Polytechnic. Also doctoral researchers sometimes participate in teaching. HHÅA also resorts to visiting lecturers from companies, auditing association, and other universities. The research education at HHÅA is provided in collaboration with the national program within business studies (KATAJA), and on international level within Nordisk Företagsekonomisk Förening (NFF), and the Institute of Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM). 1 2 of Economics and Business Administration at Åbo Akademi. are doctoral researchers with relatively independent teaching and research tasks. 5
