Each year, nearly 200 Benedictine students prepare to teach students in general and in special education classrooms specifically through preclinical and clinical experiences. The University has established numerous partnerships with public and private elementary, middle and high schools in local communities. 6 Benedictine University s elementary, secondary and special education programs provide future teachers for critical shortage areas in Illinois including Spanish, English as a Second Language and Special Education. The University prepares individuals for three different licensures Elementary, Special Education and Secondary, the latter spanning one of the following subject areas: Biology, Business, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Social Science and Spanish. 7 Physical Education Active. Health. An active lifestyle is directly related to a longer, healthier life. The Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education (P.E.) program at Benedictine University emphasizes the positive impact of a healthy lifestyle and an appreciation for daily physical activity. Students who major in P.E. benefit from Benedictine s outstanding reputation in teacher education and the strengths of its programs in Exercise Physiology, Nutrition and Health. Students have access to one of the premier exercise physiology laboratories in the Midwest in the Human Performance Laboratory located in the Birck Hall of Science. P.E. majors at Benedictine also benefit from the new state-of-the-art fitness center in the Rice Center that features a 7,500-square foot lower level dedicated to cardio and circuit training, a 4,200-square foot strength training mezzanine that features free weights and the latest in weight machines, and modern sports training facilities. 8 Master of Arts in Education The Master of Arts in Education program prepares liberal arts teachers to assume leadership roles in the schools. This program provides an in-depth understanding of curriculum development and implementation while affording ample opportunities for developing innovative teaching strategies and process-oriented assessment techniques.

9 Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and in Special Education The Master of Education programs are designed for teachers seeking enhancement of their leadership potential and their understanding of methods of teaching to individual needs.

10 Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education and Organizational Change Leadership. Change. Higher education faces serious challenges, including affordability, access, accountability, market competition and quality assurance. Each challenge brings opportunities for innovative leaders who understand both the culture of higher education and the principles and practices of constructive organizational change. The Benedictine University Ed.D. in Higher Education and Organizational Change is designed to equip future leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to perform this leadership role. Scholar practitioners are prepared to meet real-world challenges in the management of change, institutional planning, policy development, student affairs, technology management, curriculum, evaluation, budgets and personnel. The program emphasizes research methodologies, personal growth and professional networking. The Ed.D. is offered in accelerated cohort models in both on-campus and online formats. Courses are designed for students to build a foundation in management, examine education issues in detail, develop research skills, and plan and execute a dissertation within three-and-a-half years. The internship is competency-based and fosters practical application and assessment. 12 Nursing Empowering. Caregivers. Nursing is one of 10 professions expected to experience the largest growth during the next decade. Fueling this phenomenal growth is an aging population and a shift toward wellness and health promotion. The people who will benefit from these changes are highly skilled nurses with advanced degrees. Benedictine University s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) program for working registered nurses (RNs) is an accelerated program that students complete in one calendar year; provides tuition competitive with state universities; grants credit for prior learning; accepts up to 65 hours of community college credit on transfer; offers concurrent credit toward master s degrees; and emphasizes critical thinking, autonomy and empowerment. Benedictine University has partnered with three community colleges Triton College in River Grove, College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn and Morton College in Cicero allowing graduates of those schools associate degree nursing programs to earn a B.S.N. from Benedictine on their local campuses. 13 Even as nationwide unemployment hovers around 10 percent, the demand for nurses continues to grow. Benedictine s fully online Master of Science in Nursing program is designed to meet this demand and ensure the continued quality of nursing care. Master of Science in Nursing The M.S.N. program emphasizes interrelated academic preparation in areas of leadership, education, administration and global health care. Nurses study these content areas in the context of emerging demographic trends such as the expected increase in the elderly population and trends in caring for vulnerable populations including the homeless, those with chemical addictions, HIV/AIDS, the poor and those with catastrophic illnesses. The M.S.N. program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The Master of Science in Nursing program is comprised of 36 credit hours and can be completed in as little as 16 months. Electives can be taken concurrently with core nursing courses. The M.S.N. program helps nurses meet the challenging skill demands of the 21st century. Successful completion can open the door to a career as an executive, leader, educator, administrator, case manager or managed care consultant.

14 Nutrition students gain applied practical experiences through projects, laboratories, case studies, simulations and practicum activities. These experiences foster development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The undergraduate Nutrition program a Didactic Program in Dietetics ensures the provision and promotion of high-quality education for preparation of competent future nutrition professionals. The program provides learners with comprehensive knowledge of the interrelationships of food, nutrition and health. Nutrition studies the relationship between diet and health. Deficiencies, excesses and imbalances in diet can produce negative impacts on health such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity or osteoporosis. Many common diseases and their symptoms can often be prevented or alleviated with better nutrition. Students who major in Nutrition at Benedictine University gain a working knowledge of the relationship between nutrition and optimal health, wellness and athletic performance; the influence of socioeconomic, cultural, psychological and other factors on food consumption; healthy and high-quality food selection and evaluation principles; healthy recipe development procedures; the relationship of nutrition to disease risk and status; education and counseling concepts; and problem-solving methods in nutrition and dietetics. The Benedictine University undergraduate Nutrition program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. 15 Benedictine University s Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness program is designed to enable students to apply current concepts of nutrition and health to the well-being of individuals and groups across the life cycle. Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness Students learn and apply key areas of nutrition science, including alternative and complementary nutrition care; assess, plan and design nutrition and wellness education or training program for individuals or groups; effectively communicate health education and health promotion; conduct evaluation or community-orientated research; and apply critical thinking skills. This master s degree program is unique in that in addition to providing a life science-based foundational core, it provides the opportunity for selection of a concentration in nutrition (Sports Nutrition or Dietetic Internship), Nutrition Entrepreneurship, or from the complementary field of Health Education. Today s dynamically-evolving health care environment demands that health practitioners develop skills for fostering improved health outcomes. The Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness program at Benedictine University provides a powerful foundation that prepares students to become vital ingredients in nutrition and wellness programs.

Master of Public Health Benedictine University s Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program combines the foundation disciplines of public health with a high degree of responsiveness to local needs and changing circumstances. Throughout its offerings, the M.P.H. program seeks to produce graduates who will help meet the public health and health care needs of tomorrow. The M.P.H. program is built on core courses that teach the foundations of the public health processes. Students are taught by experts in the field. Each course has a conceptual, factual and skill component. Students learn the disciplines by attaining the knowledge and skills required to perform professional functions. Each student in the M.P.H. program acquires a universally defined set of competencies preparing them for the real world of public health. As part of the curriculum, each student demonstrates these competencies in a real life work setting under the direction of a public health professional.
