This short, focused, executivelevel course will cover the aspects of data management, including big data management and data analytics, that managers need to understand in order to successfully run data teams and projects. Big data is often defined as data that exceeds the capacity of standard data storage, manipulation and processing tools in terms of volume, velocity and variety. This section will introduce the important characteristics of big data and illustrate these descriptions with examples of how big data is used in practice by organisations to gain competitive advantage. What is data analytics? Data analytics is the set of tools and techniques that allows analysts to extract actionable insight from big data collections. By extracting actionable insight from data, organisations are able to make validated, data-driven decisions rather than relying on gut instinct. This section introduces data analytics and describes examples of how it is used by some of today s most sophisticated organisations. Why is data management important? The power of big data and data analytics comes at a cost. Data collections must be managed to ensure that data resources are protected and organised, and that all stakeholders follow standard data processes.
