1 Valsecchi 1918 Furniture Fair / 17th-22nd April Collection Artfully sculpted and harmoniously combined with various materials, wood is the star of the 2012 Collection. Poetry, memory and emotion. Mark, material, colour. These are the common denominators of nine furniture items conceived for Valsecchi 1918 by a team of designers led by art director Nicola De Ponti. Every product of this collection reveals the mark of its artist, all experts in the field of contemporary interior design. Valsecchi 1918: continuity and eco-sustainability New to the world of medium to high end design, Valsecchi 1918 is the recently opened division of a cutting-edge industrial group specialized in the production of beechwood furniture and accessories for the large-scale retail trade. The Valsecchi 1918 brand boasts a longstanding track record of expertise, and continues its focus this year on formal solid wood furniture design, launched with the Stick collection at the last Milan Furniture Fair. The company follows a strict ecological policy by using clean, zero impact energy in its production cycle as well as wood from environmentally, socially and economically managed forests Collection: the concept Wood is back to being the star of the design scene; it also represents a philosophical choice that reflects our need to return to a simpler and more ecological way of life full of warmth and feeling. This is the concept that lies at the heart of the 2012 Collection, designed under the direction of Nicola De Ponti (AstoriDePontiAssociati). Nine different design items (like the wardrobe, table, chair, and bookcase) express the Valsecchi contemporary home, a habitat that brings together exclusive pieces with a strong emotional and material impact. Meticulously crafted and finished, they are made of solid beechwood, the company s hallmark, together with solid ashwood, natural multilayer birchwood and ashwood veneer, combined with other materials to enhance texture and colour contrasts. The design is unique in its glued or fitted assemblage of components.

2 2012 Collection: the products galatea - armchair design Tommaso Caldera Conceived to be used in any setting, it is strongly characterized by the contrast between the sober lines of the wooden structure and the softness of the upholstered back. The U-shaped legs give formal continuity to the whole, sealing the design in an organic whole. obi - container unit design Davide Anzalone + Tommaso Bistacchi From coffee table to vase-holder, from display unit to a chest of drawers: a neutral rectangular box has in its interior a coloured base structure, fitted out with shelves, uprights or drawers, depending on its function. The design is characterized by the formal and functional contrast between the interior and the exterior of the piece of furniture. leo - desk design Marta Laudani + Marco Romanelli Going beyond the excessive technicality adopted today for office furniture, it offers a warm and engaging image. Its characteristic is the presence of four drawers, the contents of which, rather than remaining hidden from view, can be seen through the crystal top. The limited dimensions make it the ideal desk for a bedroom. papillon - chair and stool design Karen Chekerdjian A chair and a stool with strongly graphic characteristics. Inspired by the lines of the roofs of Japanese temples, elongated upwards at their ends, they are connoted by the gentle curves of the seat and the oval-shaped back. tago - hat stand design Paolo Cappello A piece that exists both for its function and as a purely decorative element. Proposed in a freestanding version, with a great sculptural connotation, it is made with two modules joined by a few screws. The different variants of finish in which it is available allow it to be used both in homes and for contract furnishing.

3 twin box - bookcase design Nicola De Ponti Modular box elements in three different sizes are freely placed next to one another and on top of one another to form compositions as room dividers with two fronts, given movement by alternating solid and hollow parts and the use of coloured inserts. This way, maximum freedom of expression can be obtained with a minimal number of elements. traverso - table design Francesco Faccin It takes the idea of the central beam as the key element, transforming it into the backbone of the design. The solid wood structure is dry assembled with dovetail joints clearly visible from the front. The table top is divided into two halves, in wood or glass, to take up very little room when it is folded away. binario - table design Francesco Faccin The aim of the project is to transform the necessary joint into a strong decorative element. Conceived like a small side table with geometric lines and made of wood, when it is disassembled, it is easy to transport and requires no tools for assembly. It is ideal in any setting. monks - sideboards design Paolo Cappello They can exist independently or be placed next to one another like domino pieces to create original and personalized compositions. With doors and drawers, the sideboards come in different sizes and with different capacities, all characterized by the wooden contour in relief, enhanced by bright colours.

4 2012 Collection: the designers Nicola De Ponti Nicola De Ponti was born in Milan in 1971 and graduated in Architecture from Milan Polytechnic in From 1996 to 1999 he did a series of projects for Tusquets, Diaz and Asociados architecture and design studio in Barcelona. From 2001 to 2004 he worked for Flavio Albanese s architecture studio in Milan for the conversion of the FAEMA industrial complex. It was around that time that De Ponti developed his first interior design and architectural projects as a freelance architect. From 2003 to 2006 he taught at Milan Polytechnic and was mentioned several times in the Adi Design Index (2008, 2010, 2011). In 2004 he began freelancing in partnership with Antonia Astori, specializing in architectural, interior, furniture and industrial design. He also began collaborating with OFARCH (Design Diffusion World editions) as an architectural journalist and critic. Since 2011 he has combined architecture and design with art direction for Italian furnituremaking companies, including Mussi Italy and Valsecchi Anzalone + Bistacchi Design Studio Established in 2009 by Davide Anzalone (Porto Recanati, 1980) and Tommaso Bistacchi (Milan, 1982), the ANZALONE+BISTACCHI design studio is engaged in industrial and product design. Davide Anzalone specialized in Product Design at FH Joanneum in Graz and returned to Italy in 2006 to work for Design Group Italia for a short period. He has freelanced for various architecture studios and consumer electronic firms and also works as a concept and innovation design consultant. Tommaso Bistacchi graduated from Milan Polytechnic with a Specialist Design Degree and began working in Denmark and Holland (including an internship at Magnus-Olesen Furniture and an interaction&experience design course at TU/e in Eindhoven). He is now a 26-year old freelancer specialized in product design, producing his own designs and collaborating with companies and designers. He has been teaching at Milan Polytechnic in the Antonio Macchi Cassia workshop since Karen Chekerdjian Lebanese Armenian Karen Chekerdjian graduated with a Master in Product Design and Design Direction from the Domus Academy in Milan in Her specialization in industrial design developed after further experiences in cinema, advertising and graphic design. After graduating she began working in Milan and in 2001 she returned to Beirut where she established the Karen Chekerdjian Studio. Initially focused on exploring new design ideas, the studio began to concentrate more the production of furniture and everyday objects in small series, limited editions and made-to-order collections. Chekerdjian s work has featured in a series of international exhibitions including Utopi (Copenhagen), Al di là del mito (a Pan-European show), Promosedia 2007 (Milan), del Nord Luci (Tokyo), ECHO (Beirut) and galleries like the Miyake Issey Foundation in Tokyo, the Spazio Orlandi Gallery in Milan and the Sfeir-Semler Gallery in Beirut.

5 Francesco Faccin Born in 1977 in Milan, Faccin attended the European Design Institute and began working for Enzo Mari while also freelancing as a designer for other companies like Tod s and Segis. Since 2004 he has been developing self-produceable designs in small series and works closely with craftsmen to monitor every stage of product development. In 2007 he took part for the first time in SaloneSatellite with his Quadrato table, now part of Cosmit s permanent collection. In 2009 he met Michele De Lucchi and their partnership has continued to this day. In 2010 he took part in SaloneSatellite for the second time and won the Design Report Award Since 2010 he has been teaching Industrial Design at the NABA in Milan with a Product Design course entitled Progetti non Oggetti. He freelances for Italian and foreign companies like Danese, Miniforms, Bolia, Valsecchi Marta Laudani and Marco Romanelli Marta Laudani and Marco Romanelli, architects, have been collaborating since 1986 in the associated offices of Rome and Milan. They work in the fields of design (for Driade, Fiam, Laboratorio Pesaro, O luce, Salviati and Glas), interior design and exhibit design. They designed the renovation of the Museum of Roman Civilization in EUR in Rome for Fiat Engineering. Both flank their design work with an intense critical meditation on topics involving living and design. Some of their most important articles include: Aperto Vetro (Glass Biennial at the Correr Museum in Venice), Electa, 2000; Gio Ponti: A World, Abitare Segesta, 2002; Joe Colombo: interior and lighting design, O luce, 2003; Il design della Gioia (with Alba Cappellieri), Skira, 2004; Bruno Munari: vietato l accesso agli addetti ai lavori, Corraini, 2008; Lorenzo Damiani: ma dove sono finiti gli inventori, Electa, Marco Romanelli was also editor of Domus from 1986 to 1994 and of Abitare from 1995 to Tommaso Caldera Born in 1986, Caldera graduated in Industrial Design from Milan Polytechnic and worked from 2008 to 2011 for Odoardo Fioravanti before moving to New York in 2012 to work for Jonathan Olivares. In 2011 he began freelancing for Italian companies and presents his first products as an independent designer at the Milan Furniture Fair in Paolo Cappello Born in Verona in 1980, Cappello graduated in Industrial Design from Milan Polytechnic and spent three years working for Ludovica + Roberto Palomba in Milan. In 2007 he opened his studio in Verona, where he worked with other professionals in the field of design, architecture and communication. He has received several international awards and prizes and writes the design column of Rolling Stone s online magazine.
