CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY FOR THE GREATER
Creighton University exists for ONE POWERFUL, PURPOSEFUL REASON. To enable students to find their way in the world, contributing something meaningful through a life of leadership and service. It begins with the academic rigor of a world-class liberal arts education. It s anchored in our Jesuit tradition. It s influenced by an engaged community of thinkers, healers and leaders. And it s empowered at every step by the bridges that connect renowned academic programs in health, law, business and arts and sciences. AND THAT S WHAT WE RE HERE FOR.
FOR THE VALUES, that have always guided us. Jesuits are members of the Society of Jesus, the largest Catholic religious order of priests and brothers in the world. The Society of Jesus was begun by St. Ignatius Loyola in the mid-1500s. Since Creighton s founding, we have been guided by our Jesuit values. When Mary Lucretia Creighton included $100,000 in her will to establish a college in memory of her husband, Edward, a school was erected on 6.2 acres of land at the corner of 24th and California Streets, and the Jesuits were asked to operate it. On Sept. 2, 1878, the school opened with one priest, three scholastics, and two laypeople forming the faculty. On Aug. 14, 1879, the Jesuits incorporated The Creighton University under Nebraska law. More than 17,000 Jesuits serve around the world. While they are involved with missionary and parish work, spiritual direction, retreat centers and social justice, their main focus is on education. And this is the Jesuit tradition at Creighton: Excellent, purposeful higher education that produces women and men who are committed to service and are empowered to examine, engage and change the world. This is Creighton University. 4,076 UNDERGRADUATES 3,943 GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FOUNDED IN 1878 One of 28 JESUIT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE UNITED STATES STUDENT BODY 59 STATES & TERRITORIES REPRESENTED ACADEMICS 782 FACULTY MEMBERS 45 COUNTRIES REPRESENTED 43 % MALE STUDENTS 6 GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS 57 % FEMALE STUDENTS LOCATED IN Omaha, Nebraska 139-acre campus ADJACENT TO DOWNTOWN BUSINESS AND ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICTS 9 COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES HEIDER COLLEGE OF BUSINESS GRADUATE SCHOOL SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY SCHOOL OF LAW COLLEGES & SCHOOLS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE COLLEGE OF NURSING SCHOOL OF PHARMACY & HEALTH PROFESSIONS COLLEGE OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES GRADUATION & RETENTION 25 % higher GRADUATION AND RETENTION RATES THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE FOR INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION 70 + UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS 3 UNDERGRADUATE DIVISIONS 11:1 STUDENT-TO- FACULTY RATIO 22 AVERAGE CLASS SIZE More than 96 % OF CREIGHTON GRADUATES ARE EMPLOYED, INVOLVED IN VOLUNTEER WORK, OR ATTENDING GRADUATE OR PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL WITHIN SIX MONTHS OF GRADUATION
For the moments we experience. If there s one thing students do at Creighton, it s everything. They learn, they serve, they lead and they form a community of thinkers, makers and doers. Matthew Huss, Ph.D. Professor of Psychology College of Arts and Sciences One of two faculty members recognized with a national teaching award in This is where our students get involved, in more than 200 clubs and organizations, including academic, athletic, cultural, political, professional, service, social and spiritual clubs, plus more than 16 Greek organizations and opportunities to work on campus publications. This is where our students get support, through the Creighton EDGE program, which gives them access to everything they need to reach their educational, life and career goals. It brings together academic advising, career planning and exploration of graduate and professional studies. This is where our students get out into the world, by taking a service-learning semester in the Dominican Republic, by enrolling in faculty-led courses taught abroad, or by studying at one of Creighton s 161 partner universities in more than 53 countries. This is where our students give back, in more than 800 outreach programs locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, while contributing more than 389,000 volunteer hours to those in need. For the education that inspires us. A Creighton education is built on a solid liberal arts core, but with a focus on the career skills students need to make a difference. These are connections that cross disciplines, giving students a well-rounded, complete education and creating a bridge that takes graduates directly to professional programs, careers and lives that matter. Our undergraduate, graduate, and professional students are taught and mentored by Creighton s 782 outstanding faculty members, some of the best in their fields. Each year, our faculty publish groundbreaking books, attract major research grants, and present their work to their peers around the world. And more than 61,000 Creighton alumni, living and working in the U.S. and 87 other countries, form a strong community that embodies the Jesuit mission.
FOR THE THINKERS, creating new solutions to challenging problems. COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES (Established in 1878) The College of Arts and Sciences offers more than 60 bachelor s degree programs to its 2,420 undergraduates. The award-winning faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences, Creighton s largest and oldest college, prepare students for successful lives, giving them the personal attention they need to be critical and ethical thinkers, creative problem solvers and clear communicators. The innovative Magis Core Curriculum provides the foundation for the more than 60 majors and pre-professional programs that students may pursue. In addition, Creighton offers interdisciplinary programs in areas such as energy technology, health administration and policy, and justice and peace studies. Students have unique opportunities for research with faculty, often presenting at national conferences and publishing in peerreviewed scholarly journals. The new Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (CURAS) facilitates undergraduate research/scholarly activity. Students have won national recognition, earning prestigious scholarships, such as the Fulbright, and are eligible to earn an invitation to join national honor societies, such as Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Nu. Graduates go on to study at distinguished national and international universities and also have successful careers in a variety of companies worldwide. FOR THE LEADERS, acting upon what they know is right. HEIDER COLLEGE OF BUSINESS (Established in 1920) The Heider College of Business provides its more than 750 undergraduates and 300 graduate students extraordinary opportunities through applied learning, internships, and leadership and career development. Many programs have top 20 rankings in various business disciplines. In addition: More than 3,000 paid internships are available 90 percent of Heider students complete more than one internship, giving them a competitive edge. The Portfolio Practicum course brings Wall Street to Creighton through the use of Bloomberg terminals and the opportunity to invest almost $5 million in Universitysponsored funds. The student-run ijay, an Apple Authorized Campus Store, offers students hands-on experience managing and marketing the store as part of the ijay Management Practicum. Unique interdisciplinary opportunities include: the 3-3 Law Program, allowing students to complete business and law degrees in six years; and the Pre-Healthcare Program, providing the ability to earn a business degree and complete requirements for admission to healthcare professional programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or physical and occupational therapy. The five Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Omaha provide great opportunities for the students and graduates of the Heider College of Business, Creighton s first named college.
FOR THE COUNSELORS, working for those who seek justice. SCHOOL OF LAW (Established in 1904) The Creighton University School of Law produces attorneys who not only care for their clients needs, but recognize their duty to the profession and society at large. Distinctive features of the law school include: GRADUATE SCHOOL (Established in 1926) Creighton graduate education develops critical judgment, independent thinking, scholarly initiative and disciplined inquiry. The Graduate School, a leader in interdisciplinary education, offers 32 master s degrees, three Ph.D.s and an Ed.D. Degrees range from atmospheric sciences, physics, international relations, English, ministry, theology and education to the medical and pharmaceutical sciences. Dual-degree programs facilitate earning graduate degrees in conjunction with professional degrees such as the J.D., Pharm.D. or M.D., or earning graduate degrees in two fields. More than half of our students enroll in online programs including negotiation/ dispute resolution, security analysis and portfolio management, ministry, healthcare ethics, public health, emergency medical services, medical anthropology, information technology management and business. Creighton s largest online program, the interdisciplinary Ed.D. in Leadership, bridges faculty, resources and expertise across disciplines, including business, education, health sciences, government and more. Flexible scheduling so students can earn a J.D. degree at their own pace, in two, three or four years. Lectures by nationally prominent attorneys and officials. Every other year, students in constitutional law have a week-long opportunity for face-to-face discussion with Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Clarence Thomas. The Werner Institute s innovative master s degree programs, with the opportunity to earn a J.D. and M.S. in Dispute Resolution in three years. Milton R. Abrahams Legal Clinic provides free legal services to low-income individuals and handson experience to law students in family, landlordtenant and public-benefits law, as well as aid to domestic violence victims. The Community Economic Development Clinic provides free legal services to low-income entrepreneurs and experience to students in business formation, taxation and employment law. The Government and Leadership (GOAL) degree program allows students to earn J.D. and M.S. degrees in three years and includes a government agency externship in Washington, D.C. FOR THE IDEALISTS, who strive to do more. COLLEGE OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (Established as University College in 1983) The College of Professional Studies provides on-campus and online undergraduate degrees, certificates and noncredit programs for adults in small classes offering individual attention. Our extensive support system includes tutoring, academic and career advising, and a willingness to accommodate students needs. The college works closely with its many corporate partners. Through CPS, Creighton is one of only 12 universities in the nation with a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Services. Our first online bachelor s degree, the B.S. in Leadership, enrolled its first class in 2013 and already is nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Creighton supports an unlimited number of Yellow Ribbon awards for qualified veterans and is recognized as a Military Friendly School. The college also offers courses to eligible high school students through the NextStep Program.
FOR THE HEALERS, serving those in need of care. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE (Established in 1892) For more than 120 years, the School of Medicine has attracted quality students from all over the world and has graduated highly sought-after physicians. In 2013, 6,955 prospective students applied for 152 first-year seats. Creighton matched 94 percent of 2013 medical graduates with their specialties of choice. The medical school consistently ranks above the national average in graduate satisfaction. In a recent survey, nearly 95 percent of graduates were pleased with the quality of their medical education. One hundred percent of Creighton medical students perform community service. Creighton was the first Catholic higher education institution to receive the Community Service Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges for the student-run Magis Clinic, which serves the uninsured and underinsured. Creighton has a long history of groundbreaking research that makes a difference in people s lives. Research awards to the School of Medicine for the most recent academic year totaled $17.8 million. The School of Medicine has a regional campus in Phoenix at St. Joseph s Hospital and Medical Center, a member of Dignity Health. It is the only Catholic medical school campus west of Omaha. SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY (Established in 1905) One of the most affordable private dental schools in the nation, the School of Dentistry develops competent, values-centered general dentists. Graduates perform extremely well on national and regional licensing exams and the school has an excellent placement rate for post-graduate dental specialty education. In the Jesuit tradition, students concentrate on healthcare for the underserved, providing care to underprivileged adults and children and volunteering hundreds of hours of service. More than 11,000 patients are served annually and the school s clinics recorded more than 45,000 patient visits last year. The School of Dentistry received 2,400 applications for 85 available seats in 2013 and leads the nation in the recruitment of Native American dental students. SCHOOL OF PHARMACY AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS (Established in 1905) The School of Pharmacy and Health Professions (SPAHP) is a leader in clinical education and academic technology. Its innovative distance Pharm.D. and OTD pathways serve students in remote areas and those who otherwise might not be able to access health professional education. Creighton was the first in the nation to offer professional doctorate degrees in occupational therapy (1995) and physical therapy (1996). In 2001, the SPAHP established the nation s first webbased, entry-level distance pathway to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. It is still the only school in the world to offer this degree via this pathway. Creighton has a public/private partnership with the University of Alaska Anchorage and, through distance education technology developed in the SPAHP, offers OTD and Pharm.D. pathways, addressing practitioner shortages in Alaska. SPAHP is at the forefront when it comes to interprofessional and community engagement. Its students are truly engaged in the spirit of service to others, through both clinical and community programs. COLLEGE OF NURSING (Established in 1971) The College of Nursing offers undergraduate (BSN), master s (MSN) and doctoral (DNP) programs that prepare graduates for managing care and improving outcomes using a holistic, personal and socially responsible approach. Selected courses and tracks are offered online in addition to on-campus education in Omaha and Hastings, Neb. The BSN program includes a traditional four-year direct-entry pathway that allows students to start their college careers as freshmen in nursing and apply for the Leadership Scholars Program. The accelerated BSN (ANC), a 12-month program for college graduates who pursue nursing as a second degree, was one of the first in the nation. The MSN and DNP programs prepare graduates to be nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, clinical nurse leaders, clinical systems administrators and nurse educators. Community involvement is at the heart of Creighton nursing. Students attain hands-on learning at free health clinics and through extracurricular servicelearning in international healthcare at the Institute for Latin American Concern in the Dominican Republic. Average annual pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for BSN graduates continue to meet or exceed national averages. Annual pass rates on the certification examination for nurse practitioner-track graduates generally range from 90 to 100 percent for firsttime test-takers.
FOR THE DIFFERENCE we can make in a human life. ALEGENT CREIGHTON HEALTH/ALEGENT CREIGHTON CLINICS Creighton offers 12 doctoral degree programs in the health sciences and expansive opportunities for clinical training. Through an innovative partnership, Creighton University and the area s largest healthcare provider offer an innovative educational environment for students in the health sciences: Alegent Creighton Health. As part of the Catholic Health Initiatives network, Alegent Creighton Health strives to ensure that patients receive personalized, high-quality, compassionate care with an emphasis on clinical integrity and the pursuit of excellence. Creighton health sciences students have the opportunity for clinical training at Alegent Creighton Clinics an expansive network of community-based clinical sites throughout Nebraska and Iowa that offer patients more than 20 specialties at more than 100 locations. In 2013, Alegent Creighton Health announced plans to create a one-of-a-kind academic medical center that will be located at two sites. Inpatient services and the Level One trauma center will be on the Bergan Mercy Medical Center campus in the heart of Omaha; an academically focused ambulatory center near Creighton will offer primary, specialty and emergency care that stresses community health, wellness and health promotion. Both sites will play critical, inter-related roles in creating new approaches to clinical care and the best learning environment for Creighton students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, emergency medical services (EMS), and public health.
FOR THE INNOVATORS, who push ideas and exploration further. Clinical research conducted at Creighton has been essential to discovering the underlying causes of disease and new ways to prevent and treat illness. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other national granting agencies fund much of the research at Creighton, which ranges from the basic sciences to translational research. Our students work alongside their professors, discovering knowledge and developing critical-thinking skills. $28.8 million MOST RECENT UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC-YEAR RESEARCH AWARDS 30+ CURRENT NUMBER OF ACTIVE NIH GRANTS 400 NUMBER OF UNDERGRADUATES ENROLLING IN RESEARCH HOURS EACH YEAR
FOR EVERY HARD-FOUGHT GAME and every victory won. Creighton competes with some of the biggest names in college sports as part of the BIG EAST Conference, but our move to the BIG EAST is more than just an honor for our athletics program. It s a testament to the level of our academics, athletics and reputation throughout the country. And this level of skill, determination and character is matched by the students competing in our Division I, club and intramural sports programs.
