1 Provost The Catholic University of America invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost. The Provost s principal responsibility will be to lead the next stage of development in the academic life of the University. The University serves the nation and the Catholic Church through its educational, research, and creative endeavors. It provides the highest quality graduate and undergraduate programs designed to prepare students for lives of inspired leadership in the world. This position offers an extraordinary opportunity to engage an academic enterprise in applying a comprehensive vision of the Catholic intellectual tradition across a full range of academic disciplines. Institution Overview The Catholic University of America, founded in 1887 by the U.S. Catholic bishops with the support of Pope Leo XIII, is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States. Established as a graduate research center, the University began offering undergraduate education in 1904 and today is home to 12 schools and 21 research facilities. The Catholic University of America is the only American university established by papal charter, and the only American university with ecclesiastical faculties granting canonical degrees in three disciplines--theology, philosophy, and canon law. The University's verdant 180- acre campus, located just north of Capitol Hill, allows students easy access to the wide range of educational, cultural and political opportunities that Washington, D.C. has to offer. A Capital Location Located near the heart of Washington, D.C., The Catholic University of America is unique as the national university of the Catholic Church. The private coeducational school now has 3,572 undergraduate and 3,127 graduate students from across the United States and 83 foreign countries. The University motto is Deus Lux Mea Est God is My Light. Academic colors are gold and white. Athletic colors are red and black. McMahon Hall, one of the University s busiest and most diverse campus buildings, is home to many administrative offices and the School of Arts and Sciences. Students at Catholic University have the best of both worlds: they study and live on the largest campus in Washington, D.C., where they can enjoy a complete collegiate experience, but they also are located in the heart of the nation s capital. 3 A Wide Range of Programs All 12 of the University s schools offer graduate and/or professional degrees. Ten of the schools award undergraduate degrees architecture and planning, arts and sciences, business and economics, engineering, music, nursing, philosophy, professional studies, social work, and theology and religious studies. All undergraduates combine a base curriculum in the liberal arts with more in-depth courses from their major fields of study. The Metropolitan School of Professional Studies provides opportunities for adults to earn baccalaureate or master s degrees or to participate in certificate programs. Theological College, the University seminary, prepares men for the priesthood who come from many dioceses of the United States. Accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools as well as many disciplinary accrediting organizations, Catholic University enjoys a distinguished history and has filled an important niche: doctoral programs in philosophy and social work that are among the nation s oldest; the only university music school in Washington, D.C.; the largest architecture school in the area; a law school that is a pioneer in clinical education; and a drama department that has been the educational incubator for acclaimed playwrights, directors, and actors. Diverse Opportunities The University s Washington, D.C., location provides many opportunities for internships across a wide spectrum of fields and organizations. Internships can be obtained at private and public organizations, including congressional offices. Education abroad opportunities are available through short-term, semester, and yearlong programs through CUA s schools. Catholic University s students have numerous opportunities to participate in athletic, recreational, and fitness programs. The Cardinals compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III s Landmark Conference and, in football, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The University fields 21 intercollegiate varsity teams. For women these include basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field (indoor and outdoor), and volleyball. For men the varsity sports are baseball, basketball, cross country, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track and field (indoor and outdoor). The Department of Athletics, in conjunction with the Office of Campus Activities, offers an array of recreational club sports. The Department of Athletics also oversees a comprehensive intramural program and a splendid student fitness center. Catholic University s men and women s soccer teams won Landmark Conference championships in 2014.

4 Spiritual Life The Catholic University of America provides a variety of experiences from the rich tradition of Catholic spiritual life. Its Office of Campus Ministry offers numerous venues for spiritual devotion and growth, including daily Mass, night prayer, RENEW (small Christian communities), ENCOUNTER (charismatic prayer groups), weekly Eucharistic adoration, and ten retreats each year that enable students of all religious traditions and all levels of spirituality to deepen their faith. Students participate in campus liturgies as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, readers, altar servers, sacristans, and music ministers. They pray and worship at the University s chapels and at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Community Service Campus Ministry offers many opportunities for community service in the Washington, D.C. area, in other parts of the United States, and abroad. Students volunteer with organizations such as the Little Sisters of the Poor, Habitat for Humanity, and St. Ann s Center for Youth and Families. They deliver food to people who are homeless, serve in soup kitchens and shelters, and tutor in after-school programs. They also volunteer for mission service trips at a number of international mission sites. The Provost Position Overview The University seeks a dynamic and committed leader to inspire the next stages of Catholic University s academic development. Working with the President, the Provost will be called upon to lead the enhancement and creation of academic programs of true distinction. By doing so, the Provost will ensure that The Catholic University of America fulfills its academic mission in service to Church and nation as a genuine home of graduate and undergraduate programs designed to develop tomorrow s leaders The Provost is the chief academic officer of the University and acts for the President in his absence. He or she will be responsible for all aspects of academic life at The Catholic University of America, including scholarship, teaching, and creative endeavors at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Provost, working with the deans, provides overall leadership for strategic planning, academic program development and review, budget management and the hiring, promotion, and tenure process for faculty. The candidate must embrace the mission of the University and be able to serve as an effective advocate for a broad and rich Catholic intellectual tradition.
