3 The Jersey Wedding experience The introduction of civil marriage in APPROVED PREMISES Couples can now marry at premises approved by the Constable of each of the island s twelve parishes. These premises include Jersey s castles, heritage sites, manor houses, many of the island s larger hotels and various other venues. It is possible for a private home to apply for approval for a one off marriage for a family member. Couples wishing to marry in approved premises will need to make their own arrangements with the management. Having agreed on the date and time of the marriage the couple must call on the Superintendent Registrar at the Register Office in the Royal Square to arrange for their marriage licence. Couples will have to produce their full birth certificates and if previously married their divorce decree absolute or if widowed the death certificate of their late spouse. They will be required to collect their marriage licence three working days before their marriage. Marriage in approved premises will be celebrated either by the Superintendent Registrar, his deputies or his delegates. It will be the responsibility of the management of the approved premises to ensure that there is a delegate available to celebrate their marriage. Couples may request a particular delegate to celebrate their marriage with the agreement of the Superintendent Registrar and the management of the approved premises. Couples may have a ceremony of their choice provided that at some stage of the ceremony they make the declarations stipulated in Article 20 of the law and that no religious service is being used during the civil marriage. Couples may wish to have music or non religious readings such as poetry and should consult the Superintendent Registrar of their desired format and on the music and readings that would be available. Photos by Peter Trenchard In order to marry in either The Office of the Superintendent Registrar, Approved Premises or in a non-anglican Church a licence must be obtained from the Superintendent Registrar. Persons wishing to obtain a marriage licence must produce copies of full birth certificates, that is the long form certificate with details of parents recorded on it and if either party has been previously married documentary proof of freedom to marry. A divorced person must produce a court sealed and certified copy of the Divorce Decree Absolute or Final Decree. A Widow must produce both a wedding certificate as well as the death certificate of her late husband. A widower, however need only produce the death certificate of his late wife. Persons under the age of sixteen are not permitted to marry. Persons between the age of sixteen and eighteen must obtain written consent of both parents or guardians before a marriage licence can be issued. For parents or guardians resident in the island the consent must be given in the presence of the Superintendent Registrar, for parents or guardians who live outside the island the consent may be given on a form which is provided by the Superintendent Registrar. All documents in a language other than English must be accompanied by an officially certified translation into the English language. Those who have changed their name by deed poll or statutory declaration must send a copy of that document.

4 Obtaining your wedding licence Recognition of foreign divorces One or both parties to the marriage may call in person at the Office of the Superintendent Registrar and give formal notice of their intention to marry. They must, at this time, produce the original copies of the documents referred to previously. Alternatively a couple may apply to the Superintendent Registrar for a Notice of Marriage form and make an application to marry by post. The completed forms must be returned to the Superintendent Registrars during the three months preceding the date of the marriage. The Registrar will request that the form be returned approximately one month before the date of marriage but no less than 10 working days before that date. For non-british citizens wishing to marry in the island the Superintendent Registrar advises that where one or both parties to the marriage are citizens of a country other than the U.K. they should ensure that the laws of their own country are observed to ensure that any marriage contracted in Jersey is recognised in their country. In this connection the advice of the consul or Consular Agency for the country in question should be sought. In addition citizens of countries outside the EEC wishing to marry a British Citizen should ensure that their immigration status permits them to marry. All non-eec citizens should check that they have the necessary immigration clearance before coming to the Island. A divorce decree issued outside the United Kingdom is only recognised in Jersey if, at the date of the institution of the divorce proceedings in the country in which it was obtained, either spouse was habitually resident in, or if that country uses domicile as a ground of jurisdiction in matters of divorce, domiciled in that country, or was a national of that country; or if the divorce is recognised as valid in the country of the spouse domicile. All such persons are advised to contact the Immigration Department, Maritime House, La Route du Port Elizabeth, St Helier, JE1 1JD. The Notice of Marriage form must be accompanied by the required documents and appropriate fees. The parties to the marriage will be advised to present themselves at the Office of the Superintendent no less than three working days before the date of the marriage to collect their marriage licence and to complete the formalities Photos by Gary Grimshaw

You can get married at the Register Office from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 11.00am and 1.00pm. In the summer it may be possible for you to get married at a later time on a Saturday afternoon. The Register Office is closed on Sundays and all public holidays. All marriages in the Register Office take place at the discretion of the Superintendent Registrar. Half an hour is allocated for each marriage. Marriages in non-anglican churches take place at the discretion of the minister or priest of the church concerned, and marriages in approved premises take place at the discretion of the management of the premises concerned. Jersey Museum - The Merchant s House No 9 Pier Road adjoins the Jersey Museum and is one of the finest examples of a restored 19th century town house in Jersey. In the summer the walled courtyard, adorned with lavender and vines, is a beautiful and peaceful refuge in the heart of St Helier. Elizabeth Castle For 300 years Jersey was defended by this impressive fortress built on an islet in St Aubin s Bay. Civil wedding and partnership ceremonies are held in the Governor s House, which was built in the 1590s. Sir Walter Raleigh was its first resident and it was where Charles II lived during his short stay in the 1640s. This beautiful building has a large terrace, perfect for drinks after your ceremony, and is located near the top of the castle where the views are fantastic.
