NORTON 2 PROFESSIONAL WORK HISTORY 6/13-Present Doctoral Student, University of Maryland Sociology Department, College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, College Park, MD As a full time graduate student, I am enrolled in the PhD program in the Sociology Department at the University of Maryland. Upon completion in 2017, I will serve as a Permanent Military Professor at the United States Naval Academy. 12/10-6/13 Command and Control Specialist, 613 th Air Operations Center (613 AOC), Hickam Air Force Base, HI As a command and control specialist, I am responsible for planning and directing Air Force flights throughout the entire Pacific area of operation. I directly supervise a team of military and civilian members that dynamically responds to the priorities of a 3-star General Officer. Responsibilities include interpreting the objectives of a 3-star General Officer and matching flights to them ensuring mission completion; preparing decision papers to seek delegated authorities from national-level commanders (e.g. Secretary of Defense), and preparing executive summaries of previously flown missions. Original writing responsibilities include revising a variety of local instructions and preparing new content for a Standard Operating Procedure used by the staff of a 4-star Admiral to direct flight operations. Other responsibilities include serving as my organization s representative for two major multi-national exercises, the larger of which includes 21 nations from the Pacific area of operation; providing helicopter expertise for operations such as the relief efforts following the March 2011 tsunami in Japan, and serving as the officer responsible for keeping 70 military and civilian members combat mission ready. 03/08-12/10 Department Head, Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light 37 (HSL-37), Marine Corps Base Hawaii Kaneohe Bay, HI As a Department Head, I was responsible for directing flight operations for 11 helicopters and 50 military aircrew members, managing a budget of over $150,000 annually. Responsibilities included leading a team of 20 military rescue swimmers; managing a team of junior officers that scheduled over 4,000 flight hours annually, and providing real-time, executive-level updates to my commanding officer. Original writing responsibilities included drafting various award submissions and creating an annual training plan to keep 50 military members current in their general and flight-specific training requirements. I also served as the Officer in Charge of helicopter detachments aboard three different U.S. Navy ships, leading a team of 25 deployed military members flying two helicopters charged with defending the ship from submarine and surface threats.

NORTON 3 PROFESSIONAL WORK HISTORY (Continued) Other responsibilities included serving as the officer responsible for the safety of flight operations; liaising with Japan Maritime Self Defense Force officers to coordinate the landing of U.S. helicopters aboard Japanese warships, and arranging numerous test events for the next generation of torpedoes to be employed by my helicopter. 11/07-03/08 Flight Training, Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light 40 (HSL-40), Naval Station Mayport, FL As a Fleet Replacement Pilot in flight training, I was responsible for completing a refresher training syllabus in the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter. I successfully requalified in both the pilot and mission commander roles, and additionally was trained as a Crew Resource Management (CRM) instructor to mentor military aircrew members in effective communication skills with a focus on safe flight operations. Other qualifications obtained include Department Head Leadership Training. 06/06-11/07 Effects Analyst, Commander Naval Forces Europe/Commander Sixth Fleet (CNE-C6F), Naples, Italy As an effects analyst, I was responsible for drafting strategic guidance for a 4-star Admiral in support of his plan for all naval forces in the European and African theaters of operation. Responsibilities included identifying desired effects to achieve strategic objectives; creating metrics to measure the progress towards achieving desired effects, and creating from scratch a computer program to both monitor numerous metrics simultaneously and display progress in a cohesive manner. I twice deployed aboard the Sixth Fleet command ship to provide analyst support for operations, including the evacuation of U.S. military and civilian personnel from the Lebanese embassy in Other responsibilities included instructing over 500 staff members on database system use and spearheading the second annual Gulf of Guinea simulation, bringing together 20 outside organizations to examine maritime security in west and central Africa. 05/03-06/06 Executive Assistant/Senior Mentor, United States Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD As an executive assistant to the Commandant of Midshipmen (Dean of Students equivalent), I was directly responsible for required personal support. Responsibilities included managing the Commandant s daily schedule; planning and executing travel arrangements to various alumni events in numerous states, and providing original input to products required by the Superintendent (College

Prior to this duty, as a Company Officer I was responsible for mentoring the moral, mental and physical development of 140 Midshipmen in their quest to become officers in the Navy and Marine Corps. In preparation to serve as a Company Officer, I earned a Master of Science degree in Leadership and Human Resource Development. I also attended night classes for three years to complete required professional military education and earn a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. Other responsibilities included serving as the physical readiness coordinator for a staff of 100 military members. 10/99-05/03 Division Officer, Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light 42 (HSL-42), Naval Station Mayport, FL As a Division Officer, I was responsible for the quality of maintenance performed on 15 helicopters flying over 6,000 hours annually. Responsibilities included leading a team of 10 maintenance personnel; scheduling 150 inspections for 7 detachments operating on unique schedules, and successfully preparing my entire organization for an inspection from a team supervising all Naval Air Forces in the Atlantic area of operations. I also served as the Assistant Officer in Charge of a helicopter detachment aboard a U.S. Navy ship, leading a team of 22 deployed military members flying a helicopter charged with defending the ship from submarine and surface threats. As well, I deployed to the southern hemisphere for cooperative naval exercises with 4 South American countries. Other responsibilities included leading the efforts of 260 military members to organize a change of command ceremony; successfully representing my organization twice at a multi-unit tactical evaluation, and managing over $100,000 in computer resources. 03/99-10/99 Flight Training, Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light 40 (HSL-40), Naval Station Mayport, FL As a Fleet Replacement Pilot in flight training, I was responsible for completing the initial training syllabus in the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter. I successfully qualified in both the pilot and mission commander roles. Other qualifications obtained include Basic Officer Leadership Training; initial survival training, and a variety of underwater acoustic courses.

NORTON 5 PROFESSIONAL WORK HISTORY (Continued) 05/97-03/99 Flight Student, Training Squadrons in Texas and Florida As a flight student with Training Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN (VT-27) in Texas and Helicopter Training Squadron EIGHTEEN (HT-18) in Florida, I was responsible for completing the primary and advanced flight training syllabi in the T-34C Turbo Mentor aircraft and TH-57B/C Sea Ranger helicopter. I successfully qualified in the pilot role in both aircraft, earning my unrestricted Naval Aviator pilot wings. Other qualifications obtained include aviation physiology and water survival.

NORTON 6 OTHER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE 08/11-12/11 13 th Air Force Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) Representative, Hickam Air Force Base, HI As the CFC representative for a Numbered Air Force (medium sized company equivalent), I was responsible for coordinating the solicitation of charitable donations from 550 civilian and military members. Responsibilities included managing a team of 25 military and civilian volunteers; completing weekly summary reports for a 4-star Admiral, and providing cohesive final summary information on campaign results. Through the efforts of my team, we were able to contact every member of our organization and raise over $100,000 for various charities, which placed our organization at the highest measured tier of giving. 08/04-05/06 Division of Officer Development Instructor, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD As an instructor for the Aviation Junior Officer Practicum, a required undergraduate course for all Midshipmen selected for aviation service in the Navy, I was responsible for giving 36 future naval officers mentorship and guidance in their chosen profession. Responsibilities included executing a rigorous course syllabus; administering and grading required exams and papers, and developing unique syllabus content specific to the current status of Naval Aviation. As well, I served as a facilitator in numerous character development seminars for senior Midshipmen, preparing them to consider the tough moral decisions they would likely encounter as military officers. 08/03-05/06 Naval Academy Flying Squadron Officer Representative, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD As the officer representative for a major extra-curricular activity, I was responsible for mentoring hundreds of Midshipmen from all four classes who were interested in pursuing a career in aviation. Responsibilities included leading 16 Midshipmen on the flying team as they participated in intercollegiate competitions; managing a budget of $33,000 annually, and supervising the founding of a ground school that allowed 60 Midshipmen to pursue their private pilot s license.
