EXPERIENCE Director, Academic Advising Wadley Campus and College Diversity Programs Coordinator Southern Union State Community College November present Provide academic advising, course scheduling, registration, retention tracking, and clearing students for graduation. Work extensively with the statewide articulation reporting system (STARS), the computerized academic transfer planning program designed to inform students who attend Alabama community colleges about degree requirements, course equivalents, and other transfer information pertaining to specific majors at each state funded four-year institution. Utilize the IBM AS/ 400 enrollment management system to enroll students, adjust class schedules, and monitor academic progress. Teach college orientation classes, counsel students regarding academic program requirements, college policies, and standards of progress. Counsel ADA and special needs students concerning accommodations. Assist with admission of and advise international students using the student and exchange visitors information system (SEVIS). Managed a $738, Title III federal grant to strengthen institutional programs in the following areas: (1) student matriculation, retention, and graduation, (2) promoting issues of cultural diversity throughout the college, and (3) providing study hall and tutorial programs. Total college enrollment is 5,000 students covering three campuses in Wadley, Opelika, and Valley, AL. As evening coordinator, was responsible for faculty and student supervision to include security and safety measures, hazardous weather evacuation and shelter plans, academic advising, special programs, student services and business office administration, collaboratively working with the deans (academic, technical, and health science) and president in executing college policies, facilitating community needs, addressing student and faculty concerns, managing a staff of 6 employees, and $15 million in assets and equipment. As director of college diversity programs, supervised a secretary, faculty tutors, and student employees working in the office of diversity programs. Conducted workshops, speak to classes and groups, write articles in the school newspaper, and prepare local and regional press releases promoting issues of cultural awareness and diversity. Present programs, guest lecturers, and organize field trips for cultural and educational enrichment. Additionally, implemented and managed the Southern Union Program for Athletic Academic Counseling (SUPAAC) which assists athletes and other students in the areas of academic advising and class scheduling, along with conducting study halls and tutorial sessions. Developed and updated the course competency (learning objectives and expected outcomes) for the African-American History course (HIS 256). Advise the college president on issues germane to minority student and community concerns regarding the college. Provide tutorial assistance, academic program counseling, and developed retention strategies for students in general, and for the improvement of the college's minority student retention rate. Project manager and assist with college recruiting. Serve on college and community committees, serve as faculty advisor to student organizations, and perform other duties assigned by the deans, and president. Instructor of Management - Stillman Management Institute (SMI) May October 1994 Taught management courses, prepared course syllabi, recruited students for the SMI, and provided academic advising and career counseling for students enrolled in the evening and weekend programs. Consultant to the Stillman College vice- president for academic affairs in the area of institutional effectiveness. Participated in workshops to improve instructional programs and retention among nontraditional and part-time students.
2 Page 2 Administrative/Research Assistant - The University of Alabama August October 1994 Coordinated faculty searches while performing background verifications on prospective candidates. Managed the Gadsden cohort of the University's Innovative Leadership Program (ILP) by coordinating class locations, instructors, and their payment contracts. Assisted in the University's ongoing plans to enhance institutional effectiveness by improving academic program reviews. Assisted University professors in the areas of (1) special projects, (2) research, (3) class preparation and, (4) administering examinations. Served on The University of Alabama's Institutional Effectiveness Committee and assisted in writing the committee's section of the University's self-study report. Served on the College of Education's Graduate Studies and Research Committee, in addition to the Department of Higher Education's Faculty Search Committee. Held membership in the Academy of Management, and supported The University of Alabama's public radio fund and Alabama Public Television. Career Adviser/Recruiter/Consultant - Tuskegee University June July 1990 Counseled students and alumni in the Career Development and Placement Center in the areas of resume writing, interviewing, and analyzing the job market in search of potential employers. Implemented a marketing program to promulgate current job openings and career opportunities. Recruited for the University in Birmingham, attending career fairs, and answering questions regarding academic programs, school history, and student activities. Assisted with the Business and Industry Cluster and served as a consultant to the School of Business with the Federal Agency for Industrial Development (AID) Program, facilitating workshops for international participants from Pakistan. Operations Officer - United States Air Force November February 1988 Responsibilities included Deputy Chief, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Division; supervising programs for over 40 recreation and community facilities; 600 employees; $15 million in annual sales and revenue; a $12 million budget; and assets over $8 million (supervising a staff of 14 employees at the base community center). Assisted service members in completing income tax reports as the squadron's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) representative sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Squadron project officer for fund raising and building of the base "super playgrounds." Financial Operations Supervisor - United States Air Force March October 1986 Responsibilities included managing a $14 million budget; conducting surprise cash counts, financial, and inventory reviews; using the Z-100 microcomputer and the Multiplan program for budget preparation and revision; teaching financial planning courses; analyzing and preparing written evaluations of financial statements for over 50 quality of life programs in the MWR Division (supervising 13 employees in the financial operations branch). Coordinated the division's Combined Federal Campaign drive and served as the communications security and mobility deployment officer.
