7 CSIC: organization of the Journals! Scientific staff at the different Institutes run the Journals! An Institutional Editorial Commission survey a Normative regulating different aspects of the editorial policy and management of the Journals, such as:! Appointment of the Assistant Editors (min. 25% from CSIC)! Appointment of the Editor-in-Chief! Appointment of the Advisory Board members (international composition is mandatory)! 4-years mandate!
8 CSIC: the management of the Journals! At the Journal:! The scientific staff effectively running every particular Journal (manuscript reception, peer-review), and the technical staff managing proof correction, layout, etc., are quite variable.! At the Publication Department! 2 persons supervise the final issue before printing, and manage administrative relations with the Press! 4 persons are in charge of the distribution of the print edition! 3 persons are in charge of the online edition!
9 CSIC: peer review and quality control! The peer review process as required by the Normative:! is double-blind! at least 2 external reviewers are involved! the Editor-in-Chief and the Assistant Editors make the decision upon final acceptation! Quality control! a yearly report on submissions, review and acceptation rates! the list of reviewers made public is optional, but encouraged!
10 CSIC: improving the print edition! Between , the print edition went through a normalization process to fit the highest scientific editorial standards! As a guide, Latindex normative was followed! Changes mostly affected to! Front cover design and editorial information! Article layout! Bilingual Spanish(others)-English metadata!

14 CSIC: the online edition! Making CSIC Journals available online was the next step to take within this process! In January 2006, CSIC adhered to the Berlin Declaration on Open Access, and consequently OA is the model of choice for both the Journal's site Revistas-CSIC, and the Institutional Repository site Digital.CSIC! The online edition for all Journals was created between June and October 2007 with 32 Journals! Contents accessible at that time were at least since 2006, other contents added later as available! Two more Journals were added in 2008 and 2009!
15 CSIC: OJS, the online publishing tool! The software used for the online edition is OJS (Open Journals System)! OJS is developed by the PKP (Public Knowledge Project, Canada and USA Universities)! OJS is an open source software, free to use, modify and distribute, available in multiple languages! Specifically aimed at the management and publishing of scientific Journals! OJS includes different indexing and reading tools, CrossRef, Google Scholar, RSS, announcements, notifications, discussion, statistics, editorial reports, etc.! Compliant with the OAI-PMH standards, assuring interoperability!

Simple and advanced search engine (into metadata) for all Journals simultaneously! Info and registering / subscription tools for users! Access to other CSIC and external resources!

Each Journal kept in a separated database: security and technical reasons! Simple, clean, high editorial quality interface (polytonal Greek, Hebrew, phonetic symbols, chemical symbols in titles and abstracts)!

Most A&H Journals (20) contents are already digitized since founded until 1995: 660,000 pages! 3 Science Journals are already fully digitized, 2 of them available at their websites! A digitization plan, already completed, will fill the chronological gaps: 250,000 pages! An uploading plan started in Dec-09 to publish these archives online along !
38 CSIC: the online edition, preservation! Online contents and the website files are routinely duplicated and backed up! External backups are also considered! There is a policy of collaboration with external repositories and authors (self-archiving), with emphasis in the preservation of the Journalʼs visibility, implemented by:! Providing free metadata, automatically and on-demand! Asking to link full-text to our website, avoiding the unnecessary multiplication of PDF!
39 CSIC: the print + online editions, the frame! Our goal business model is non-profit and self-sustainable! Both print and online editions will be maintained in the future! Open Access is the model of choice, with two main objectives:! to reach the highest impact into the scientific community through the most demanding editorial standards! to provide access to scientific knowledge to society at large! Creative Commons license by-nc! DOI (CrossRef) linking (needs to change editorial uses)!
40 CSIC: the print + online editions, business! Presently, the online edition is offered to the subscribers of the print edition at no extra charge (exclusive access during the embargo): no separate subscription to the online edition only (OA mandate)! We have not detected a decrease in subscriptions to full-oa Journals (but maybe is too soon?)! Yearly subscription rates range from 35 to130! Overall printing costs +/- equals overall subscriptions income! Loss ( 30% of income) comes from the distribution costs!
41 CSIC: the print + online editions, concerns! Paper or electronic...? Full or delayed OA...?! Two attitudes: Science and Humanities, Social Sciences somehow in between! Science Journals: no fears to go ʻe-full_OAʼ! Humanities Journals: main fear is to lose access to other print Journals received by exchange! 20 Humanities CSIC Journals exchanged for about 850 national, 1500 international, titles (needs revision)! Both: OA may be seen as less prestigious...?!
42 CSIC: the print + online editions, future! Some ideas! Reduce distribution costs: little margin to adjust more... raise fees...?! Explore full OA + print on demand...?! reduce paper! safeguard for exchanges! Move towards full OA, no paper! sustainable OA: no charge for users, authors pay...?! Whatever the options, Humanities will take longer to adapt!
