The Majestic s staff would like to wish all residents the best of Holidays and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. We would also like to thank the Board of Directors and all Residents for their initiative in establishing an employee Holiday Fund. This fund was started four years ago and has been included in the budget. Every unit contributes $ 100 towards this fund. The resulting 16,400 is then distributed among all employees of the Majestic according to seniority, and years of service. Of course, if you so desire, and wish to compensate your favorite employee or employees further, you are welcome to do so. 2 Page 2 Majestic Tower at Bal Harbour Condominium December 2011 Safety Tips for Holiday Decorating The holiday season can bring lots of joy into our homes, but it s also a time for potential safety hazards. The following tips from the National Safety Council will help your family have a safe holiday. Exterior Decorations Do not overload circuits with too many lights. Only use lights that are rated for outdoor use. Make sure that any extension cords running power to exterior lights are shielded from moisture and protected from the weather. Secure all exterior decorations to prevent accidents caused by wind or heavy snow. Interior Decorations Do not buy a dry Christmas tree. Remember to water your tree every day. When buying an artificial tree, choose one that has been labeled fire resistant. Keep the tree away from your fireplace, radiators, and other heat sources that can cause a fire. Check lights for broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, as well as any loose connections. Use no more than 3 light sets on any one extension cord. Be sure to use indoor lights only indoors, and outdoor lights outdoors. Turn off all lights on your tree and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house. Use only tinsel made of material that is nonleaded and nonflammable. Place the menorah and other candles out of the reach of children. Never leave burning candles unattended, and always supervise children when they re near candles. Many Christmas plants, including mistletoe, holly berries, and amaryllis, can cause severe stomach problems if eaten. 3 December 2011 Recipe for Latkes 4 medium potatoes 1 medium onion 2 eggs 3/4 cup matzah meal (flour or bread crumbs can be substituted) salt and black pepper to taste vegetable oil Shred the potatoes, onion and bell pepper into a large bowl. Press out all excess liquid. Add eggs and parsley and mix well. Add matzah meal gradually while mixing until the batter is doughy, not too dry. (you may not need the whole amount, depending on how well you drained the veggies). Add a few dashes of salt and pepper. Heat about ½ of oil to a medium heat. Form the batter into thin patties about the size of your palm. Fry batter in oil. Be patient: this takes time, and too much flipping will burn the outside without cooking the inside. Flip when the bottom is golden brown. Place finished latkes on paper towels to drain. Eat hot with sour cream or applesauce. They reheat OK in a microwave, but not in an oven unless you cook them just right. If you d like to try something a little different, add some bell peppers, carrots, celery, or other veggies to batter to make veggie latkes! Make a fresh cut across the bottom, about 1" above base, so your tree can drink easily. Make a preservative: mix a quart of water with 1/2-cup of corn syrup and a tsp. of bleach. 6 Page 6 Majestic Tower at Bal Harbour Condominium December 2011 In 2nd century BCE, in an effort to pull Jews away from Judaism and adopt the Greek culture Hellenism, the Syrian-Greek regime of Antiochus outlawed aspects of Jewish observance, including the study of Torah, which began to decay the foundation of Jewish life and practice. In response, a band of Jewish settlers took to the hills of Judea in a revolt against this threat to Jewish life. Antiochus sent thousands of well-armed troops to crush the rebellion, but the Maccabees succeeded in driving the foreigners from their land. Jewish fighters entered Jerusalem in December, 164 BCE. The Holy Temple was in shambles, defiled and desecrated by foreign soldiers. They cleansed the Temple and re-dedicated it on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. When it came time to re-light the Menorah, they searched the entire Temple, but only one small jar of oil bearing the pure seal of the High Priest could be found. Miraculously, the small jar of oil burned for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be brought. From then on, Jews have observed a holiday for eight days in honor of this historic victory and the miracle of the oil. Today, the observance of Chanukah, meaning dedication features the lighting of a special Chanukah menorah with eight branches (plus a helper candle), adding one new candle each night. Other customs include spinning the dreidel (a top with Hebrew letters on the sides), eating oily foods like potato latkes (pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly donuts), and giving Chanukah gelt (coins) to children.
