2 BCom(Hons) in Accounting Graduate study requires much more intensive and creative endeavour than undergraduate study. Students benefit from smaller classes and closer contact with staff and fellow students. Graduates with superior analytical skills are in demand in the business, academic and public sectors

3 Honours Alumnus Bill Huckstep completed a BCA*(Hons), First Class in Accounting and Commercial Law in 2008 and is now a Senior Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Wellington, providing tax services. His work involves providing tax compliance and consulting services to a range of local and international corporate clients. Bill says the highlight of his time at Victoria was graduating with First Class Honours in Accounting after an intensive but incredibly rewarding year of study. Bill also tutored in firstand third-year accounting courses during his Honours year. The Honours programme was fantastic for challenging my existing opinions and beliefs, and I also developed strong communication, writing and time management skills, he says. I enjoyed accounting and economics at school and Victoria s Faculty of Commerce had a really good reputation. A commerce degree has direct application to career opportunities and provides a solid grounding in a range of business areas. Bill recently completed a six-month internal secondment to the Risk and Controls Solutions team, where he was involved with reviewing IT and business processes for corporate clients. * Degree now renamed BCom

4 The Honours Accounting Programme The Honours degree in Accounting is a one-year, full-time programme for graduates with a BCA or BCom in Accounting (or equivalent). The Honours programme is a research-based degree in which you will develop the ability to conduct rigorous independent research and explore conceptual and theoretical issues within the accounting discipline. The Honours programme, through its focus on research, develops the following skills: critical assessment and analysis of current research in accounting conducting research and constructing arguments communication, both written and oral independent study and time management. Students who complete a full year of Honours study will be able to count this year as one of the three years of professional experience required by the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) for membership of the College of Chartered Accountants

5 Courses and workload The BCom(Hons) programme consists of seven courses (120 points), including three core courses and a wide range of electives. For details, please visit the School of Accounting and Commercial Law s website, at At Honours level, the biggest challenge for students is the depth of understanding required, which goes significantly beyond that for undergraduate study. Most Honours courses are taught through compulsory weekly seminars and often take the form of student-led discussions or presentations guided by the lecturer. Honours courses require students to read and critique contemporary research articles in accounting and associated disciplines. Assessment is based less on numerical calculations and more on research-based projects

6 Entry requirements Entry to the BCom(Hons) in Accounting programme normally requires a BCA or BCom in Accounting (or equivalent). Students with consistent undergraduate grades of B or better in their undergraduate courses, especially in compulsory 300-level ACCY courses, are well placed for consideration. Entry decisions are made on a case-by-case basis; the most important criteria for entry are enthusiasm for the programme, a demonstrable ability to think critically, confidence with written and oral communication and curiosity and eagerness to question ideas and practices. 7 Completing an MCom The Master of Commerce (MCom) in Accounting is a threetrimester programme for graduates with a BCom majoring in Accounting or similar Bachelor s degree who wish to undertake advanced study in Accounting and related areas. It can also be obtained by students completing the BCom(Hons) in Accounting through a single additional trimester of full-time 500-level study. For further information contact the School.
