Straehle, Ph.D. Office Hours: By Appointment Only or Phone: (please feel free to text me) Required textbooks: Myers, D. G. (2009). Social psychology (10th ed.). Columbus, OH: McGraw-Hill. The course will require your familiarity with Blackboard (e.g., discussion boards). Course Description: In this course, we will review theory, concepts, research, practice, and methods in social psychology in an online format using discussion boards, videos, readings, assignments, and other class related activities. Above all, the course s primary objective is for students to gain a greater awareness, understanding, and application of social psychology. Course Objectives: Learn terms and facts of social psychology Learn techniques and methods used to gain knowledge in social psychology Learn concepts and theories of social psychology Develop ability to draw reasonable inference(s) from observations of social psychology situations related individuals Intersession 2011 PSY 230 Social Psychology (Online) 1 of 6
2 Teaching Philosophy ( Growing a head taller than yourself ): Theoretical Model My teaching philosophy stems from developmental psychologist Lev Vygotsky s concept of the zone of proximal development. In this instance, the class and I function as a guide to support your learning. In this supportive and developmental environment, the goal is to continually become who you are and who you are not at the same time. In other words, the class and I will continually create zones of proximal development where learning is within your reach. I have also adopted Harry S. Truman s philosophy on education. Below is an excerpt of his educational philosophy: A college graduate with the right sort of instruction should find at his graduation that he is only at the door of knowledge. He should have learned in going through his schooling where to find the information on the subjects that make for scholarship. If he hasn't learned that, the time spent in school has been wasted for no good purpose. If, when he comes out of school, that thirst for learning has been brought out he never ceases to find fields for study that open up endlessly before him (From a handwritten manuscript, ca. 1953, President's Secretary's Files.). Assessment model I subscribe to two general learning assessment models. The two models stem from Miller s Pyramid and Bloom s Taxonomy. Miller s pyramid examines an individual s competency in an area by measuring what they know, know how, shows, and does. Similarly, Bloom s Taxonomy assesses an individual s competency by examining whether the individual can remember, understand, apply, synthesize, evaluate, and create information. When I assess your learning I will be taking these two models into consideration. Miller Bloom Intersession 2011 PSY 230 Social Psychology (Online) 2 of 6
3 GRADES: Your final grade will be determined by the following assignments: Assignment Points Due 2 Letter Assignments (2 x 75) minimum: 1 page 150 Letter 1: 01/8/11 at 11pm ET Letter 2: 01/13/11 at 11pm ET Identify online videos related to a topic we discussed and post to blackboard Online Participation (you must contribute to each discussion topic on a daily basis-see schedule) 100 Post anytime during the intersession on Blackboard 150 Throughout Intersession TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS 350 Written Assignments: All written assignments must be typed in 10 to 12 point New Times Roman or Arial Font. Hand-outs will be provided covering detailed guidelines for written assignments. Final grades will be computed based upon this table Grade % Points (Points Earned/Total Points) A A B B B C C D F 59 or below Late Assignments: In my opinion, part of your college education is to prepare you for a professional career later in life. In order to simulate experiences in a professional environment, I expect you to demonstrate responsible behavior when you expect your assignments to be late. In other words, you cannot arrive late to a presentation (pre-scheduled) without notifying your co-workers or bosses. The same is true for all your assignments. Therefore, any assignment that is past the due date will not be accepted and result in zero points unless 24 hour notification is communicated prior to the due date by phone (leaving a message is acceptable). Only medical, legal and other such outstanding emergencies will not require 24 hour notification. There are no other exceptions. Intersession 2011 PSY 230 Social Psychology (Online) 3 of 6
4 You will receive zero points for any assignments that are late. There are no opportunities to make-up any late assignments. Attendance Policy: Attendance is required due to the volume of information being exchanged. There is a significant amount of information that is exchanged in every class. Therefore, consistent attendance and participation are essential to insuring a passing grade in this course. Remember, to receive credit for participant you must be contribute to the online activities (e.g., online discussion boards). Extra Credit: You will have ample opportunities for extra credit (e.g., paper on current research concerning class topics, another letter assignment, oral presentation, leading a class discussion board, posting a video, article, and etc.). The amount of points awarded for extra credit is dependent on the task you choose. The tasks requiring more time, skill, resources, and effort will be awarded more extra credit than those requiring less time, skills, resources, and effort. The maximum amount points awarded for the extra credit shall not exceed 25 points. If you have an idea for an extra credit assignment or are seeking extra credit please see the instructor. In most cases, the instructor will work with your extra credit idea. In some cases, if your participation is valuable, frequent, and contributes to learning, extra credit will be awarded at the instructor s discretion. Study Buddy & Study Team: You will be assigned a virtual study buddy at the first week of class. You and your study buddy can work at varying ways to help each other. It is your choice on how you and your study buddy want to work together. I suggest you not only rely on your study buddy but a team of students in the class to help you through some of the assignments throughout the intersession. Note on Academic Honesty: The University's Academic Honesty Policy will be adhered to stringently in this course (To obtain a complete copy of the Academic Honesty Policy, please refer to the University's catalog, call the Registrar's Office at or dbruder@sju.edu ). Individual assessments are designed to measure a student's individual knowledge and ability. Cheating or collaboration of any kind is not permitted. Violations will result in a zero (0) grade for the assignment or a failing grade for the course. Violations may be forwarded to the Academic Honesty Board for additional action which can lead to expulsion. Intersession 2011 PSY 230 Social Psychology (Online) 4 of 6
