In an August 2011 International Data Corporation (IDC) survey of Information Technology decision makers, 47% said they are likely to deploy private clouds in the next three years. 15 The Cloud, defined Surfing through the Clouds Looking at the number of server shipments to support private cloud deployments, International Data Corporation (IDC) expects this number to more than double over the next five years Worldwide Private Cloud Server Shipments For 2010 to 2015 Growing from 208,000 units worldwide in 2010 to more than 570,000 units worldwide by 2015 (See chart at right) Managing Company Resources The Cloud, defined For all size ranges of companies (small, to medium, to world wide) a corporation's Information Technology department is challenged to respond quickly to changing business needs. The result is that IT is at a breaking point: It is spending too much time on deployment, configuration, and ongoing management activities and thus is not able to focus on more strategic activities. The Cloud, defined IT Organization: Resource and Time Allocation This trend was demonstrated in a recent IDC study of datacenter managers. This study found that three- quarters (76.8%) of staff time and resources are spent on maintaining the environment and less than a quarter (23.2%) of staff time is actually spent on valueadded activities. These challenges are exactly what Cloud technology is aiming to address. Question: Thinking about your IT staff, how would you allocate time and resources spent on the following four general activity categories? 15

16 The Cloud, defined The Cloud is.. The easiest way to understand the cloud is to think of it as a utility...like electricity perhaps. When you plug a device into a wall outlet, electricity flows. You didn't generate the electricity yourself. In fact, you probably have no idea where the electricity was generated. It's just there when you want it. All you care about is that your device works. The Cloud, defined The Cloud is.. Cloud computing works on the same principle. Data Mobile Through an internet connection (the equivalent of an electrical outlet), you can access whatever applications, files, or data you have opted to store in the cloud - anytime, anywhere, from any device. Files Applications Personal Computer How it gets to you and where it's stored are not your concern (well, for most people they're not). The Cloud, defined The Cloud is.. The potential benefits of this approach are enormous. To stick with the electricity analogy, if your IT department is still pre-cloud, it is running the equivalent of its own generator. And with that comes a load of responsibility: generators break, they run out of fuel, they need to be serviced, and - if demand for power increases - new ones need to be bought. 16

Because, just like power companies, cloud providers are the ones who are responsible for all maintenance, infrastructure, and repair.
