3 WELCOME GLOBAL NURSING REVIEW PROGRAM The University of California Extension Consortium for Global Partnerships The University of California Consortium for Global Partnerships (UCCGP) is made up of four UC campuses: UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles and UC Riverside. The Global Nursing Review Program (GNRP) will be held on the UC Riverside campus the first year. Beginning Year 2, the GNRP will be held on all four campuses of the UCCGP. University of California, Riverside International Education Programs Part of the University of California system, UC Riverside campus is conveniently located approximately 50 miles east of Los Angeles and within easy driving distance to most of the major cultural and recreational offerings in Southern California. Its International Education Programs (IEP) division offers a wide variety of English language and professional training programs. COPE Health Solutions This program is offered in cooperation with COPE Health Solutions. COPE works closely with hospitals and health systems to develop customized strategies for the development of a diverse and sustainable health care workforce that is both technically competent and culturally sensitive to the specific needs of the surrounding communities. Overview Global Nursing Review Program is a combination and enhancement of programs the University of California, Extension, Riverside, and the California Community College system have been doing for years. We have re-combined and updated existing programs into a 9-month program for international nurses. International nurses may now have one-year Optional Practical Training (OPT) upon successful completion of the program and passing scores on the TOEFL and NCLEX exams with salaries beginning at $40,000 per year. UCR Extension has over 32 years experience working with international students and professionals and many years doing courses for Registered Nurses (RNs). The California Community Colleges have not only had successful nurse training programs but have also been offering NCLEX review classes for international nurses living in California and have raised the pass rate for these nurses from 50% to well over 80%. This 3-quarter intensive Global Nursing Review Program should ensure an even higher pass rate and, in addition, graduates of this program will be able to understand western medical practices and philosophy and be able to communicate effectively with medical personnel and patients in an American hospital. Starting Dates and Duration The Global Nursing Review Program is designed to be completed within a 36-week study period, starting January 4, 2008-September The program is divided into three sequential quarters, to be taken consecutively. There will be a total of 934 hours of instruction. There are vacation breaks between each quarter. Program Requirements All applicants are not accepted into the GNR Program. There are strict requirements for admission which applicants must first meet. Professional: Applicants must be licensed nurses in their home country. Applicant s course of study in home country must fulfill California state nursing requirements. Applicants lacking content requirements are strongly advised to fulfill any deficiencies before being accepted in the program. Applicants must undergo a background check to prove that there are no prior convictions or disciplinary actions against them or their license in their home country.* It is preferred that applicants have one to two years nursing experience in their home country. Applicants must take The RN Comprehensive Predictor exam (ATI) in their own country and score at least 58%. Language: The RN Comprehensive Predictor exam (ATI) is Participants must have a minimum of: 96% predictive of outcomes on the NCLEX-RN TOEFL score of 523 (paper)/193 exam. NCLEX-RN Exam Preparation: A three-quarter course designed to prepare students for the NCLEX-RN examination. The course will include an explanation of the test structure and framework, test-taking strategies, an intensive review of essential topic areas, practice tests and analyses, and a final comprehensive simulated NCLEX-RN test. Seminar: Nursing Culture in the US: A discussion-based course designed to provide students with a framework to better understand the philosophy of the nursing profession in the US and the cultural expectations in the American nursing community. Medical Terminology and Pronunciation: A two-quarter course designed to provide students with a comprehensive review of medical terminology and pronunciation. One of the primary approaches of this review is the analysis of word parts, i.e., affixes and roots. Students will cover key vocabulary categorized into body systems. A CD-ROM accompanies the course text for pronunciation modeling, which will be done in the CALL lab. Computer-assisted Practice in Nursing Applications (CAPNA): The CAPNA portion of this curriculum is an important component that reinforces course work. Each class has specific CAPNA lab assignments, and students will fill out lab progress reports each week.
6 COURSE DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW SECOND QUARTER Fundamentals in Nursing Through Virtual Clinical Excursions: A computer-assisted course that reviews the fundamental skills in nursing by navigating through a virtual clinic where students encounter a variety of realistic situations that occur in a clinical context. In this virtual environment, students work on refining key nursing skills such as communication, documentation, assessment and critical thinking. Students have the opportunity to discuss and review concepts, processes and skills that are relevant to the American nursing community. Diagnosis, Intervention and Documentation Strategies, Part II: Presentations & Applications: A course designed to enable students to present their knowledge of the nursing field in peer-lead discussions and role-plays. The presentation format is a tool to stimulate discussion and foster an interactive learning environment. NCLEX-RN Exam Preparation (Part 2): See description on First Quarter page. Medical Terminology and Pronunciation (Part 2): See description on First Quarter page. CAPNA component: See description on First Quarter page. Nursing Simulation Lab: The Nursing Simulation Lab provides a safe learning environment for students to practice critical thinking and decision-making via simulations. Nurses have the opportunity to learn and enhance their skills through the use of clinical case scenarios. Simulation Labs help the nurse by closely reproducing the patient experience with high-tech mannequins that mimic life-like medical scenarios. Placement as a volunteer in health care settings: Participants will acquire working experience as volunteers in a health care facility. Placement will vary according to individual skills and interests.
7 COURSE DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW THIRD QUARTER Introduction to the US Healthcare System: This course helps students to identify contemporary health and health policy issues in the United States. Issues such as the uninsured, quality and costs of care, health status disparities, public health concerns, matters of equity in the U.S. health care system and specific health issues are discussed at length. Students will learn about major health professions and occupations and major education pathways. They will explore the practice and professional culture between medicine, nursing and other providers and understand the organization of professional services, licensure and work hierarchies. Communication for Health Care Professionals: Students learn to communicate effectively and practice contextual situations using anatomical and disease process terms. They demonstrate use of appropriate language and an understanding of suitable cultural behavior in communicating with health care providers and patients. Nurses also learn and practice assertiveness skills to give and get proper information. They examine how cultural diversity (nationality, age and gender) in the medical environment can affect communication and how to respond appropriately to patient verbal and non-verbal body language. NCLEX-RN Exam Preparation (Part 3): See description on First Quarter page. Nursing Simulation Lab: See description on Second Quarter page. Placement as volunteer in health care settings: See description on Second Quarter page. AFTER THE THIRD QUARTER TOEFL ibt If the participant has not yet earned the required TOEFL score, s/he must take the TOEFL ibt and achieve a score of 550 or above. NCLEX-RN exam During the second quarter IEP will help participants schedule the NCLEX-RN exam. The NCLEX-RN examination is a Computerized Adaptive Test (CAT) designed to test knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry level. Students will take the NCLEX-RN exam shortly after completing the third quarter and should receive results within two (2) to four (4) weeks. Optional Practical Training (OPT) Upon successful completion of the NCLEX-RN exam and fulfillment of all other language and California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requirements, nurses will be placed in a hospital or clinic for one year of OPT. Salaries will be commensurate with salaries paid to U.S. nurses with similar education and experience. Nurses will be placed in hospitals or clinics in California according to their interests, skills and languages spoken. Online Mentoring During OPT Nurses will be assigned online mentors during their year of practical training.
