22 Pathways to University and College Study in the USA The California Postsecondary Education System The California postsecondary education system consists of a full range of public and private schools. The University of California System (UC) The top State research university is the University of California, which consists of 10 campuses including Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, and is considered the world s finest public university system. The UC system offers access to students from the top 12.5% of California high school graduates and provides most graduate studies and research. The California State System (CSU) The CSU is the largest university system in the US and is intended for the top one-third of California high school students. The CSU system consists of 23 campuses. The universities within CSU are primarily for undergraduate education, although many of the larger campuses offer master s-level degrees and since 2007, the CSU is authorized to award doctoral-level degrees in Education (Ed.D.). UCR English Language Program UCR-IEP Pathways University or Community College Professional Programs Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma Programs The California Community College System The California Community College System has 109 campuses and provides first- and second-year courses only, leading to Associate of Arts or Associate of Science Degrees. Students can then transfer to the CSU or UC system to complete their third and fourth years and receive their bachelor s degree. Private Education California has hundreds of other private colleges and universities, including many religious and specialpurpose institutions Accreditation Accreditation is a certification of the academic quality of an institution of higher learning. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is responsible for the accreditation of public and private universities and colleges in California. Optional Practical Training (OPT) R I V E R S I D E I n t e r n a t i o n a l Tr a n s f e r Tr a c k The Riverside International Transfer Track is a cooperative program between two California state institutions: University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside), and Riverside Community College (RCC). For students who are not eligible to enter UC Riverside directly from high school, this program offers an opportunity to transfer to UC Riverside after two years at RCC and to graduate from UC Riverside. No SAT or TOEFL required. High School IEP Riverside Community College University of California Riverside For detailed information, please contact the IEP office. 20

23 International Education Programs Applying for Undergraduate Admission It is difficult for international students to enter the University of California, Riverside, as first-year undergraduate students. Students must have exceptional high school grades, meet the language requirement and have successfully completed the SAT exams before graduating from their home country. Most undergraduate students attend a California community college for the first two years and then transfer to the UC, CSU systems or to another college or university for degree completion. There are many advantages of studying in the community college system for the first two years. The programs and courses are of high quality. The entrance requirements are lower and students are not required to take the SAT exams. Courses can easily be transferred to the CSU or UC system or to any university in the US. Courses are also cheaper in the community colleges than at a CSU or UC. Applying for Graduate Programs Admission to graduate programs at the University of California, Riverside, is highly competitive. Students must meet strict admission requirements and since the number of qualified applicants may exceed the number of places available, many wellqualified candidates may not be accommodated. Conditional Admission The University of California, Riverside, International Education Programs wants to help students successfully enter undergraduate and graduate programs in the U.S. and has partnered with several community colleges and universities to provide greater access to their programs. These colleges and universities have agreed to offer conditional admission to students who have completed level 600 of the Intensive English Program (IEP) or the University Admission Preparation Program (UAPP) at the University of California, Riverside. Students must meet all academic requirements for the intended program. (Please visit our web site for a complete list of partner colleges.) University and College Counseling Services The University of California, Riverside, International Education Programs provides information and counseling services to IEP students wishing to pursue undergraduate or graduate study at any institution in the US. There is no additional charge for these services. IEP also organizes a university and college fair each session where local and pathway partner institutions are invited to talk about their academic programs. 21
