26 a different style of teaching THEORY AND PRACTICE GO HAND IN HAND The alternation between theory and practice is characteristic of the Scandinavian education culture. We combine theory and practice deeply rooted in the trades and professions which the School of Technology and Business educates for. At VIA University College, as in Denmark in general, our teaching style focuses on the student being key responsible for his or her own education. This is different from many other countries where the lecturer is expected to be responsible for the development of the students. We emphasise the contact between lecturers and students, and this manifests itself in the way we communicate in the classroom. We expect the students to participate actively in the lectures by asking qualified questions and by challenging themselves, each other as well as the lecturer. Overall, we encourage the exchange of ideas and knowledge which everyone benefits from. All our study programmes include practical training periods where students do not only observe but also work with the problems right where they are. As a student, you are subjected to real-life dilemmas where the ability to combine theory with practice gives you the basis for creating new knowledge and insight. This type of education is the foundation of VIA University College. PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING The problem-based learning is a unique way of encouraging the students to think out of the box, as they are forced to integrate different areas of knowledge and collaborate with other students to solve the problems. As the students accumulate more knowledge along the semesters, the problems or projects become more complex, preparing them for their future career. Students play an active role in the learning process and take responsibility for planning and carrying out projects, either independently or in groups. The students also learn how to work in multicultural teams with lecturers assigned as supervisors to guide them through the learning process. One example of many is the semester project where students work in groups, sometimes across the programmes. They pin down a real-life problem, often defined in collaboration with a company, and in the group, they use the knowledge and skills acquired during the semester to come up with one or more solutions. Future employers, whether a private company or a public institution, put a high premium on these qualifications -because not only do they employ a new graduate with knowledge about the latest theories and methods, they also employ a graduate who has had hands-on experience with how things are done in real life. problem-based learning Students play an active role in the learning process 26 THINK OUT OF THE BOX

27 work placement At VIA University College, a key element in the learning process is to make sure that our students are sufficiently acquainted with the industry of their future career. Through working in actual companies as an equal to future colleagues and employers, students will be able to gain a practical experience and knowledge that cannot be taught at any school. In cooperation with the School of Technology and Business, you can apply for a work placement period at a company in Denmark or abroad. We help monitor and screen the companies that provide the available placements, and the whole process is approved and registered by the Danish Ministry of Education. The following serves as an example of some of the companies who offer relevant work placements: Arkitema International Architects. Cowi International consultancy within Engineering, Environmental Science and Economics. Polycom Telepresence, Voice and Video Conferencing Solutions. Siemens Global developer and manufacturer of electronics, energy and healthcare solutions. Velfac International window and facade manufacturers. Within the descriptions of the individual study programmes (pages 8 to 25), you will find information about the time and length of the work placement periods. For additional information on work placement, please visit the individual study programmes at com/horsens or teko.dk. 27

28 international partnerships TEACHER AND STAFF EXCHANGE The School of Technology and Business is proud of its comprehensive international involvement. Cultivating and strengthening collaborations and exchanging knowledge with institutions outside Denmark form a key part of our internationalisation strategy. Therefore, we are happy to receive guest lecturers from all over the world, whom we invite to give lectures at our institution to bring inspiration and knowledge from abroad into our study programmes. At the same time, we are often visited by staff members from our partner institutions that come to our school to share knowledge and learn more about our way of doing things. At the School of Technology and Business, we also strongly encourage our lectures and other staff members to spend some time abroad, so that they may bring back with them invaluable inspiration and knowledge for our students and our institution. STUDENT EXCHANGE To enrich the study experience and nurture cultural diversity at the school, we encourage our students to study abroad and welcome foreign students from partner institutions. We have agreements with approximately 250 institutions in 33 countries such as China, Australia, Hungary, Poland and Spain. This means that you as a student have the opportunity of choosing to study for instance a semester at one of our partner institutions in another country. You may also choose to do your work placement period in an international company in another part of the world. Both these opportunities give you the possibility of experiencing the way of life in another culture. For additional information on our specific exchange partners, please visit 28
